  • Purpose - This paper aims to verify whether the Fisher effect and the international Fisher effect are significant between China and South Korea in the long and short run, respectively. Research design, data, and methodology - The annual and monthly data, respectively, are employed to conduct an empirical estimation under the fully modified ordinary least squares(FMOLS). The nominal interest rate is treated as an independent variable. The inflation rate is treated as a dependent variable. Results - The results exhibit whenever in the long or short run, the Fisher effect exists in China and South Korea. However, the Fisher effect in South Korea is more significant than that of in China. Meanwhile, an empirical analysis is also preformed to investigate the long-run and the short-run international Fisher effect between China and South Korea. The deviation from the equilibrium relationship is that the commodity market and the Financial market have started to integrate in China. But China's integrated level proved to be relatively lower. Conclusions - To exploit that the Fisher effect and the international Fisher effect hold between China and South Korea can help both countries deal with the sufferings from integration of the commodity market and the financial market.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to report the effect of Korean Medicine Treatment for patient with ophthalmoplegia in Miller-Fisher Syndrome. Methods : A patient with ophthalmoplegia treated with herbal medicine, cupping therapy and acupuncture(including pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture). We used photographs of eye movement to evaluate the changes in symptoms, Scott and Kraft score of left eye, visual field test for measuring peripheral visual field, subjective symptom, and VAS for headache, subjective symptom. Results : After treatment, Scott and Kraft score increase from -4 to -2. Visual field of left side improved from 45° to 80°. Also, other symptoms such as diploma, dizziness, headache, gait disturbance was also improved. There are no adverse effects and no relapse of ophthalmoplegia after 20 days of discharge. Conclusions : This case report suggests that Korean Medicine Treatment can be effective for patient with ophthalmoplegia in Miller-Fisher Syndrome.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate index numbers by conducting various comparisons among the widely used index formulas. The comparison is considered in three ways; 1) divergences in the magnitudes of index numbers due to the use of different formulas (Laspeyres, Paasche, Fisher, and Tornqvist); 2) the effect of selection of base year (fixed-year base vs. chain-type); 3) the degree of approximation of indirect to direct quantity index. The empirical application is to sawmills and planing mills industry of U.S. using a national time series data covering years of 1948-2000. The results show that the differences between Laspeyres and Paasche index can be substantial in some cases while the difference between Fisher and Tornqvist index is minimal. We also confirm that the selection of base year can cause significant divergences, especially when the variables undergo rapid price or quantity changes over time. We find that indirect quantity index approximates direct quantity index reasonably well in U.S. sawmill industry.

  • This paper studies a novel approach to natural gait cycles based gait recognition via kernel Fisher discriminant analysis (KFDA), which can effectively calculate the features from gait sequences and accelerate the recognition process. The proposed approach firstly extracts the gait silhouettes through moving object detection and segmentation from each gait videos. Secondly, gait energy images (GEIs) are calculated for each gait videos, and used as gait features. Thirdly, KFDA method is used to refine the extracted gait features, and low-dimensional feature vectors for each gait videos can be got. The last is the nearest neighbor classifier is applied to classify. The proposed method is evaluated on the CASIA and USF gait databases, and the results show that our proposed algorithm can get better recognition effect than other existing algorithms.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report that the effect of Korean medical treatments on Miller-Fisher Syndrome with ophtalmoplegia and facial palsy. Methods : We treated a 69-year-old female diagnosed with Miller-Fisher syndrome with ophthalmoplegia, right facial palsy and other symptoms. She received Korean medical treatments such as herbal medicine(Gamiboik-tang), cupping therapy and acupuncture(including pharmacopuncture). The severity of ophthalmoplegia was evaluated by length of the eyeball movement and Scott and Kraft score. The severity of facial palsy was evaluated by Yanagihara score and the severity of other symptoms such as diplopia, dizziness, gait disturbance and neck&shoulder pain was evaluated by VAS. Results : Each neurological symptoms were improved after Korean medical treatments. In case of ophthalmop legia, Scott and Kraft score increase from -4 to 0. There were no restrictions on eye movements. In case of facial palsy, Yanagihara score increased from 10 to 40. Also, other symptoms such as diplopia, dizziness, gait disturbance and neck&shoulder pain was improved. Conclusions : This case report suggests that Korean medical treatments can be effective for Miller-Fisher Syndrome patient with Ophthalmoplegia and Facial Palsy.

  • Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a rare variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome characterized by ocular paralysis, ataxia, and insensitivity. This report describes the effect of Complex Korean Medicine Treatment (CKMT) on a patient previously diagnosed with MFS presenting with diplopia and facial palsy. The distance at which diplopia occurs, the diplopia questionnaire, the range of diplopia, the degree of facial paralysis, and the degree of ptosis were evaluated at the time of admission and weekly for 1 month. After receiving CKMT for 4 weeks the 62-year-old female had improved symptoms of diplopia, bilateral facial palsy and ptosis caused by MFS. These results show the significant association of MFS with facial paralysis and the improvement achieved with CKMT.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on limitation of eye movement in Miller-Fisher Syndrome. Methods : A patient was treated with herbal medicines, acupuncture(including electropuncture, phamacopuncture), Moxibustion and cupping therapy. To evaluate the result of this treatment, we used photographs of eye movement, Scott and Kraft score of both eye, length of eyeball movement and visual analogue scale(VAS) for subjective symptoms. Results : After treatment, the limitation of eye movement and diplopia were remarkably improved. Also, other symptoms such as dizziness, gait disturbance, facial nerve disorder were disappeared. Conclusions : This study suggests that Korean medicine treatments are effective for patient with limitation of eye movement in Miller-Fisher Syndrome.
