물총새 Alcedo atthis bengalensis Gmelin 의 繁殖生活史 (Breeding Biology of the Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis bengalensis Gmelin)

  • One nest of the Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis bengalensis Gmelin breeding in the area of Mt. Bangu, Mugye-ri, Jangye-ri, Jangyu-myon, Gimhae-gun, Gyongnam province, was observed for 43 days from July 18 to August 29, 1984. The nest was found at a height of 71cm in a steep mountain side. It was tunnel-shaped, with a size of 53cm(length), 5.5*6.4cm (the diameter of entrance) and 16.1*10.5cm (the diameter of incubation seat). The cluth size was 5 eggs. The eggs were white in color, the average size of 5 eggs being 20mm (length)*17.9mm(width). The incubation period was 18 days, the parent birds stayed in the nest at on average of 494 minutes and the rate of incubation was 82.20%. The incubation time increased gradually. The nesting period of 3 chicks was 25 days, and the average feeding frequency was 5, 50 times per day with the highest frequency of 10 times on the 14th days after hatching. The time and frequency of attendance gradually decreased as their chicks grew up. Total increase length in body was; body length 45.35longrightarrow147.80mm, wing 6.95longrightarrow63.40mm, bill 1.73longrightarrow29.36mm and body weight 2.93longrightarrow41.00gr. The prey for the 3 chicks of the nest was entirely fish. The main food item was the fry of Gobiobotidae. The home range of the nest was 0.43ha. and the territory size was 0.05ha. Their feeding ground were outside of their territory.

복합슬래그와 석탄에 대한 해산동물의 생물독성 검정 (Bioassay of Marine Animals to the Aquatic Toxicity of Composite Slag and Bituminous Coal)

  • Two species of fish and five species of marine invertebrate showed different tolerances to the toxicity of composite slag and bituminaus coal. Especially, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and young Haliotis discus hannai displayed marked differences in tolerance from. H. pulcherrimus and young H. discus hannai showed lethal effects at higher concentrations than those concentrations of the composite slag in the 1.0 and $0.4\%$ range, respectively. H. pulcherrimus showed no lethal effects at a lower concentration of $1.0\%$ composite slag and some differences in the rate of oxygen consumption with this concentration of composite slag. The lethal effects of bituminous coal on marine and fisheries organisms, even with higher concentrations, were not observed. At a higher concentration than that of 500 mg/L (ppm) of bituminous coal, decrease effects appeared in the rate of oxygen consumption of the experimental organisms. Taking into consideration that the experimental concentration of composite slag and bituminous coal were impracticable in the ocean, the results of this experiment suggest that composite slag and bituminous coal pose no real threat to marine or fisheries organisms.

Difference in Methylmercury Exposure to Fetus and Breast-Feeding Offspring: a Mini-Review

  • Higher methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation and susceptibility to toxicity in the fetus than in the mother at parturition is well known. However, the difference in MeHg exposure to fetus and offspring throughout gestation and suckling is not well established. In the human, the effects of MeHg exposure on pregnant and breast-feeding women remain an important issue for elucidation, especially those of continuous uptake in high-fish-consumption populations. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the difference in MeHg exposure to fetus and offspring throughout gestation and lactation using our recent animal and human studies data. In the animal study, adult female rats were given a diet containing 5 ${\mu}$g/g Hg (as MeHg) for 8 weeks. Then they were mated and subsequently given the same diet throughout gestation and suckling. On embryonic days 18, 20, 22 and at parturition, the concentrations of Hg in the brains of fetus were approximately 1.5-2.0 times higher than those in the mothers. However, during the suckling period Hg concentrations in the brain rapidly declined to about 1/10 of that during late pregnancy. Hg concentrations in blood also decreased rapidly after birth. In human study, Hg concentrations in red blood cells (RBCs-Hg) in 16 pairs of maternal and umbilical cord blood samples were compared at birth and 3 months of age after parturition. RBCs-Hg concentration in the umbilical cords was about 1.6 times higher than those in the mothers at parturition. However, all the infants showed declines in Hg concentrations throughout the breast-feeding period. The Hg concentration in RBCs-Hg at 3 months of age was about half that at birth. Both the animal and human studies indicated that MeHg exposure to the fetus might be especially high but it dramatically decreases during the suckling period. Therefore, close attention should be paid to the gestation rather than the breast-feeding period to avoid the risk of MeHg to human infants.

  • The rapid development of science and technology has brought about a quantitative expansion and a decrease of practical life span of information. Food science, a kind of life science and practical science, can not be an exception. Analysis of food components is the fundamental basis of the Food Science. So I would like this to be of some help to the following researches through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contents of the food analysis research papers in food science related Korean journals. Five hundred seventy four research papers published from 1984 to 1993 in the three journals, that is, Korean Journal of Food Science & Technology. The Korean Journal of Nutrition, The Korean Journal of Home Economics, which is three major journals read by people in Home Economics area are analyzed in this study. The method applied in this study is content analysis. Followings are the results of the content analysis : 1) When categorize the material foods into food groups, cereal group is analyzed most often(15.8%), followed by fish and shellfish group(12.4%), oil and fat group(11.8%). The least often analyzed food group is egg group. Among the food soybean is most often analyzed(6.0%), followed by polished rice(3.7%), glutinous rice(2.2%), cabbage(2.1%) and human milk(1.8%). 2) About the analyzed food components, the general components such as moisture, crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate and ash has been analyzed very often but the trace nutrients such as vitamins and minerals has scarcely been analyzed. 3) The method used in the food components analysis is usually AOAC(Association of Official Analytical Chemist, USA). HPLC was applied to the analysis of many food components like amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C and vitamin E.

Ion chromatographic determination of chlorite and chlorate in chlorinated food using a hydroxide eluent

  • This study was conducted to develop an analytical technique for determination of chlorite and chlorate concentrations in fresh-cut food and dried fish products by an ion chromatography/conductivity detection method using a hydroxide mobile phase. Deionized water was added to homogenized samples, which were then extracted by ultrasound extraction and centrifuged at high speed (8,500 rpm). Subsequently, a Sep-Pak tC18 cartridge was used to purify the supernatant. Chlorite and chlorate ions were separated using 20 mM KOH solution as the mobile phase and Dionex IonPac AS27 column as the stationary phase. Ethylenediamine was used as sample preservative and dibromoacetate was added to adjust for the disparity in extraction efficiencies between the food samples. The method detection limit) for chlorite and chlorate were estimated to be 0.2 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg, respectively, and the coefficient of determination ($r^2$) that denotes the linearity of their calibration curves were correspondingly measured to be 0.9973 and 0.9987. The recovery rate for each ion was 92.1 % and 96.3 %, with relative standard deviations of 7.47 % and 6.18 %, respectively. Although neither chlorite nor chlorate was detected in the food samples, the analytical technique developed in this study may potentially be used in the analysis of disinfected food products.

북서태평양 트로올 어장의 명태어항 (Trawl Fishing of Alaska Pollack in the Northwestern Pacific)

  • The catch per unit effort and the migration of Alaska pollack Theragra chalcogramma were deduced from the catch data of 1, 208 hauls of a stern trawler operated on and around the continental shelf east of the Kamchatka Peninsula and Kurile Islands from October 1974 to December 1975. Alaska pollack occupied more than ninety per cent of the total catch of approximately 17, 760 metric tons, while the cuttle and flat fishes occupied less than five percent. Beside those fishes, approximately 131 metric tons of Alaska pollack roe were produced during the voyage from February to April 1975. The mean catch per unit effort in each sub-area of fishing ground was approximately 15.5 metric tons and the peak of the CPUE occured in January and August. The CPUE in the continental shelf east of Kamchatka Peninsula ($50^{\circ}- 52^{\circ} N$ Lat) showed the maximum of 25-34 metric tons in August. The main fish school is thought to migrate southward speedily in August-September along the continental shelf from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the east of Kurile Islands. The CPUE on the continental shelf east of Kamchatka Peninsula was higher than that on the steeper continental slope. However, the CPUE on the steeper flank of the bank east of Paramushiru Island and Onekotan Island was remarkably higher than that on the relatively flat top of the bank. The small-sized fishes of less than thirty centimeter in fork length began to recruit in the fishing ground since August 1965.

제주 연안 재래식 갈치 채낚기의 침지시간에 의한 조획률 및 미끼 탈락률 (Hooking rate and bait loss rate of traditional hairtail hand line according to immersion time in the coastal waters of Jeju)

  • This paper is to investigate the effect of the immersion time in the traditional hairtail hand line for developing the fishing methods and the fishing gear in the coast of jeju. The operating of 32 times was made with each different immersion time of hairtail hand line, and the relations between the catch and the immersion time were examined. As the result, targeted species rate was over 98% of total catch. From about 800 seconds after casting, the hooking rate was decreased and the bite loss rate was increased, it seems to be made by the decreasing factors of predators including the cutting of branch lines etc. In addition, it was supposed that the hooking rate and the bait loss rate had a deep connection with feeding time zone. The level of the correlation coefficient of the bait loss rate according to the immersion time was 0.54 at $p{\leq}0.01$, in the case of the hooking rate, 0.59 was chosen after about 800 seconds. The hooking rate and the bait loss rate according to the hook number were not irrelevant to the fish school layer. Additionally, it was assumed that the bait loss rate was related to the depth of water.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the growth rate and the optimal stocking density of sea cucumbers. Grow-out was studied in situ by conducting a follow-up survey using visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags. The rearing systems were made of polypropylene pipe for the frames and netting. The experiment ran for 70 days near Yeosu, Korea in the water depth of about 7 m. A total of 576 sea cucumbers which have three groups of body sizes (small: 5.15, medium: 12.34 and large: 23.26 g) were used. The five groups of stocking densities (150, 300, 450, 600 and $850g/m^2$) in rearing system for sea cucumber were considered. Sea cucumbers were fed a mixed diet (mud, mineral, fish meal, etc.). The feed was supplied to 10% of their body wet weight once every 7 days. The survival rate (73%) of sea cucumber in $850g/m^2$ was lower than those of other density groups ($150g/m^2$: 89%, $300g/m^2$: 84%, $450g/m^2$: 78% and $600g/m^2$: 86%). The survival rate of medium size group was higher than those of small and large groups regardless of the density (P<0.05). Most of density groups have no significant difference except for $850g/m^2$ (P>0.05). The growth rate of small size group ($0.63%day^{-1}$) was higher than those of medium ($0.38%day^{-1}$) and large ($0.34%day^{-1}$) group regardless of the density (P<0.05). The threshold water temperature was $11.0^{\circ}C$ for sea cucumber growth in winter season.

Association between adherence to the Korean Food Guidance System and the risk of metabolic abnormalities in Koreans

  • Consumption of a diet consistent with dietary guidelines is believed to have a beneficial effect on the prevention of chronic diseases and the promotion of general health. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between adherence to the Korean Food Guidance System (KFGS), which was based on the 2010 revised KDRIs, and the risk of metabolic abnormalities. Five hundred and ninety-six Korean adults between 30 and 59 years of age were recruited by advertisement to the Bundang Jesaeng General Hospital (BJGH), and those not taking regular medications and without diagnoses of fulminant disease were included. Data were collected on anthropometric measurements, diagnostic parameters for metabolic syndrome (MetS), and 3-day dietary intakes from individuals in the study. The number of servings consumed from each food group was compared to the KFGS recommended servings for each of the 6 food groups. Poor adherence to the recommendations for servings of milk and dairy products (OR: 2.038, 1.128-3.682) was associated with a higher risk of MetS, and poor adherence to the guidelines for fruit consumption (OR: 1.849, 1.027-3.329) was associated with a higher risk for the existence an elevated waist circumference. Conversely, the consumption of meat, fish, eggs, and beans above the recommended number of servings was associated with a lower risk of having an elevated waist circumference (OR: 0.523, 0.288-0.950), and the consumption of vegetables above the recommended number of servings was associated with a reduced risk of having elevated fasting glucose (OR: 0.533, 0.298-0.954). These results suggest that adherence to the KFGS guidelines helps to prevent the development of MetS, but this association needs to be confirmed by prospective studies.

유아교육기관 교사의 급식 제공량에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Meal Portion Size of Kindergarten)

  • This study was performed to weigh the average meal portion sizes served for preschoolers by kindergarten teacher. The subjects were 53 teachers from 8 kindergartens, which are random sampled by meal service number. Using the weighing method assessed the meal portion sizes of food items at lunch. The data was complied by performing $\chi^2-test$ using SPSS WIN 11.0. The result was as followed: 98.0% of teacher agreed with the meal service because of 'better food habit and table etiquette'(68.0%), 'health promotion with balanced diet'(22.0%), 'owing to extending school time'(6.0%) and 'demand of parents'(2.0%). Preschooler eat lunch at class (84.9%) and meal serving size was decided by teacher (79.2%). Teachers thought that they know very well about portion size 3.8%, 96.2% of teacher thought that they don't know much about portion size. Portion size were not significantly different by food tray types but there was much different (almost 100%) compared with minimum and maximum within dishes. Most average portion size was not met dietary reference intake except cooked rice, soups and fish cutlet. Working experience effected on portion size. More served, more working experienced of teacher. For example Bulgogi was served 26.8 g by teacher who has over 6 years working experience compared with 2-6 years (20.4 g) and less than 2 years (17.1 g) (p < 0.01). Spinach portion size was significantly different by teacher's working experience (p < 0.01). Portion size were not significantly different by preschooler's age. The reference of dietary for preschooler was different by age, but teachers served meal by their experience. According to the results of this study, it is necessary to educate meal portion size for kindergarten teacher who take charge in meal serving. To provide guidance to teacher about reasonable portion sizes for preschoolers, teacher need to take nutrition education about meal service and child nutrition in college. This study would be useful to those who plan meals for preschoolers and to researchers studying dietary intakes of preschooler.
