  • This study was to provide basic data for aquatic ecosystem research using fishes. Field sampling was carried out at five selected sites of Gap Stream, and fish samples, especially for a selection of sentinel species were collected three times in June, September, and October 2007. We analyzed total length distribution of Zacco platypus in relation with the season and the sampling sites, and then compared with total body weight, condition factor (K), and age distribution of the fish. The fish population data were compared with physico-chemical water quality, obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea. Water quality analysis showed a significant nutrient enrichment, based on total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), and organic matter pollution, based on biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the Site 5, which is directly influenced by wastewater disposal plant (WDP). Population analysis of the sentinel species showed that the total number of individuals, age distribution, and the population size-structure were influenced by the effluents from the WDP, and that reproductive failure of young-age population were evident in Site 5. According to the relation analysis of total weight to K, the disturbed population was mainly attributed to combined effects of habitat modifications and chemical degradations. Regression analysis of K values against water quality parameters showed significant (p<0.05) positive relations with nutrient and organic matter contents. Our data suggest that the population structure using a sentinel fish species reflected the ambient water quality in the stream and that diagnosis of aquatic ecosystem health using Z. platypus population may be practical for water resource and ecosystem conservations.

  • The population of small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis, in the Yellow and East China Seas has decreased significantly since the mid 1970s. Several management measures have been introduced to conserve it, but population size remains low. To rebuild this population, it is now necessary to consider more effective management methods based on the stock assessment. To determine long-term population changes, fishery and biological data collected over 34 years (1969-2002) were analysed. Yearly fish length compositions were analysed for the time periods 1968 through 1970, 1978 through 1982, and 1993 through 2002; and catch data was available from 1969 to 2002. Annual population sizes were calculated based on length composition, the relationship between total length and body weight, and total landings. Analyses showed that since the 1970s, average size of harvested fish decreased; the proportion of less mature fish (smaller than the 50% maturity length, 19cm) in catches has increased and the estimated biomass has decreased significantly. Consequently, the main management recommendation is that juvenile fish need to be better protected to allow the rebuilding of resources to a more sustainable population level. This will require fish size limit, permissible mesh size, and closed area and season regulations.

  • Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficiency of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) in the prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal aneuploidy. Methods: We reviewed data of 268 cases to identify women undergoing genetic amniocentesis at cytogenetic laboratory, from January 2000 to December 2002. Amniotic fluid was submitted for both rapid FISH on uncultured interphase amniocytes using a commercially available DNA probe for chromosome 13, 18, 21, X, Y and standard karyotyping on cultured metaphase amniocytes. Results from FISH and full karyotype were compared. Results: There were 251 cases (84%) normal and 17 cases (16%) abnormal in FISH results. All 17 cases of trisomy 13, 18, 21 including two cases of mosaicism and sex chromosome aneuploidies which are detected by FISH were confirmed with conventional cytogenetics and there was no false positive result. Twenty two cases had karyotypically proven abnormalities that could not have been detected by the targeted FISH. Conclusion: Interphase FISH analysis of uncultured amniotic fluid cells has been shown to be an effective and reliable technique for rapid fetal aneuploidy screening during pregnancy as an adjunctive test to conventional cytogenetics.

  • This study is concerned to the microbial population and its effects in the fish paste products. Experimental results were summarized as following orders ; 1) The number of bacteria in accordance with raw materials and coocking site waas known to as ; Wheat flor - $7.0{\times}10^8$/gram , Brayed fish meat - $2.0{\times}10^7$/gram, Cooking table - $6.1{\times}10^6$/$1.54cm^2$Chopped fish meat -$4.1{\times}10^6$/gram, Wooden plate - $5.5{\times}10^5$/218.32cm, Sodium chloride - $8.8{\times}10^4$/gram, Wheat starch - $4.5{\times}10^4$/gram, Fish meat - $2.3{\times}10^4$/gram. However, there were a few bacterial numbers less than 300 per gram of raw materials, such as monosodium glutamate, tap water, sugar, saccharine and eggs. 2) Bacterial population in the raw materials might be changed according to the conditions of preservation. 3) When the heat tratment is used for the preservation, the thermal effects were rarely found at the interior part of fish paste products. Conduction of heat into the interior part dose not rise about $84^{\circ}C$ and the survival of bacteria could be possible under the condition. Therefore, cooking being used requires further studies. 4) Number of bacteria in the fish paste products sold in the market was higher on April and May than those on June. Especially on June, the number of bacteriz in the interior part were found higher than those in the exterior part of the products.

  • The conservation of stream habitats has been gaining more public attention and fish habitat suitability index (HSI) is an important measure for ecological stream habitat assessment. The fish habitat preference is affected not only by physical stream conditions but also by water quality of which HSI was not available due to the lack of field data. The purpose of this study is to estimate the HSI of Zacco platypus for water quality parameters of water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) using the water environment monitoring data provided by the Ministry of Environment (ME). Fish population data merged with water quality were constructed by spatio-temporal matching of nationwide water quality monitoring data with bio-monitoring data of the ME. Two types of the HSI were calculated by the Instream Flow and Aquatic Systems Group (IFASG) method and probability distribution (Weibull) fitting for the four major river basins. Both the HSIs by the IFASG and Weibull fitting appeared to represent the overall distribution and magnitude of fish population and this can be used in stream fish habitat evaluation considering water quality.

  • The harvesting season of lompa fish, Thryssa baelama, through sasi, indigenous knowledge in resources management, in Haruku Village has become a socio-cultural event that attracts many people. The sasi of lompa fish has been conducted for hundreds of years. Information on the bioecology aspect of lompa fish is limited, while this information is crucial for lompa fish sustainability through the sasi approach. This study aimed to investigate some population parameters of lompa fish, its sustainability status, and proposed a sustainable management strategy for the lompa fishery of Haruku Village. Fish population parameter covers length-weight relationship, growth pattern, size distribution, sex ratio, and the body condition index. The sustainability status was assessed following the Rapfish approach. Fisheries management strategy was performed using a conceptual model framework based on Driver Pressure State Impact Response. The research shows that the total length varies between 9.2-14.3 cm. A high relationship was found between total length and weight, and the growth pattern was an allometric negative. There was a difference in sex ratio between males and females, with females dominant. The body condition index varies over time, probably due to reproductive status. The overall sustainability status was at fair condition (61.60%), with the ecological domain having the highest sustainable status (71.07%) and considered sustain. In comparison, the technological domain had the lowest sustainability status (52.58%) and was considered fair sustain. There were seven management strategies proposed for sustainable management for the lompa fishery.

  • The fish community within the lake and 5 tributaries of Lake Chungju in spring and autumn, 2009 was surveyed. In this study, the total 128,506 individuals were collected belonging to 11 families 29 genera 34 species. The most dominant species was Squalidus japonicus coreanus that account for 91.6% of population and 49% of biomass of fish community. In the point of population, dominant species were small-sized species, which became the prey of big-sized predatory species. In the point of biomass, dominant species were predatory species which were large-sized. The most dominant species in lacustrine area was S. japonicus coreanus which accounted for 92.2% of total population and 49.1% of total biomass. The most dominant species of tributary streams was Tridentiger brevispinis which accounted for 66.4% of total population and 55.1% of total biomass. The site of C3 in lacustrine area and Dongdal-cheon in tributary streams collected the most number of species. Through ecological health evaluation of five tributary streams using 8 metric index of biological integrity (IBI) model, two streams (Dongdal-cheon, Kwang-cheon were evaluated as, "B", "good" condition, and Jangsung-cheon obtained grade C indicating "Fair" condition, Jecheon-cheon obtained grade D indicating "Poor" condition based on IBI model. Lepomis macrochirus which was designated as a domestic ecosystem-disturbing alien species with wide food niche have shown tendency to increase the number of individuals since 1991 indicating the adverse effect on not only fish community but also aquatic ecosystem food web of Lake Chungju.

  • The strength of juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, raised in different hatcheries for wild stock enhancement was evaluated in terms of resistance to an anesthetizing agent, tricaine methane-sulfonate (MS-222), and exposure to drying. The working dosage of MS-222 varied significantly with fish size and hatchery population. Smaller fish were less resistant to the chemical than larger ones. MS-222 effects also differed with fish growth history. The fish cultured in embanked populations showed stronger resistance, earlier recovery, and lower mortality, compared to those cultured in land-based tanks or collected from wild stocks. Similar results were seen in juveniles challenged to dry exposure. These results suggest that an embanked population of black rockfish is more resistant to anesthetic stress, expressed as anesthesia recovery and mortality, and that this population is healthier than others.

  • The objective of this article was to estimate the market size of recreational fishing in Korea. Data were collected through sample surveys of 3,081 households nationwide in 2008. The number of anglers was directly estimated by applying weights expressed as the ratio of population to the sample. Yields and expenditures were estimated based on modules developed. On the basis of the results, a total of 6,524 thousand anglers caught an estimated 643,343 thousand fish, divided 65.2% on inland lake and 34.8% on saltwater. An angler caught about 98 fish on average in 2008. A typical angler went fishing 9.6 times, divided 8.4 times on inland lake and 5.5 times on sea. An annual expenditure of 5,233.6 billion won was estimated. The total was divided 2,851.4 billion won on inland lake(54.5%) and 2,382.2billion won on saltwater(45.5%). An average angler spent 802 thousand won a year. This study also estimated volumes by various types of fish.

  • The virtual population analysis technique was applied to the silver croaker, Otolithes argenteus, stock based on length frequency composition, age-length key and nominal catches taken by the trawl fleet and fixed-stake nets in the Kuwait's waters during $1981\~1988$. One-year-old fish was dominant, whereas three-year-old and older fish were at a very low level. Fishing mortality was much higher in the age groups of 2 and 3 than in the others. A strong year-class occurred in 1980 and 1981. Population size of fishable stock markedly decreased from 1982 to 1985 and remained at a low level during $1986\~1987$. The effects of changes in fishing effort showed that an increase in fishing effort would not lead to benefits in yield and would comprise more young and fewer old fish, whereas a reduction in fishing effort to a certain level (by $20\~40\%$ ) from the fishing effort level on the average during $1981\~1988$ could bring some small advantage to the fishery consisting of fewer young and older fish.
