This study was conducted with Israeli strain of common carp to determine apparent protein, lipid and gross energy digestibility coefficients and apparent calcium and phosphorus availabilities of the following feedstuffs : steam-dried white fish meal (WFM-S), flame-dried white fish meal (WFM-F), brown fish meal (BFM), soybean meal (SBM), corn gluten meal (CGM), sesame meal (SSM), wheat flour (WFL), brewer's yeast (BY) and monocalcium phosphate (MCP). Test diets consisting of a 70:30 mixture of refoernce diet to test ingredient were utilized with chromic oxide as an external indicator. Fecal collection was made during 10 days before the end of feeding trial lasted for 27 days. The best weight gain and feed utilization were found in fish fed MCP containing test diet. Protein digestibility was high for most ingredients, ranging from 81.2% for BY to 91.9% for SBM, with the exception of SSM which was 77.6%. Lipid digestibility coefficients ranged 74% for CGM to 85.8% for two kinds of white fish meal. Digestible energy coefficients were generally high for fish meals, ranging from 77.4% for WFM-S to 81.3% for WFM-F, whereas those for plant feedstuffs were significantly (P<0.05) lower, from 64.5% for CGM to 70.6% for BY. Phosphorus availability from fish meals was variable with a low of 6.6% for WFM-F and a high of 13.6% for WFM-S. Phosphorus availability from SBM and BY was 7.3% and 57.2%, respectively. Calcium and phosphorus availabilities from MCP were 84.6% and 80.6%, respectively. These results provide more precise information concerning nutrients and energy utilization of Israeli strain of common carp and will allow ingredient substitutions in practical diet formulations based on levels of availabile protein and phosphorus.
The general meal intake survey in two regional areas(Seoul and Andong in Kyungsangbuk province) was conducted to investigate what the Korean favorite dishes are, as a part of study on their blood glucose responses. The survey was carried out to fill up the 45 kinds of questionnaires to adults over 20 years old. The age of subjects was evenly distributed from twenties to fifties and 54% of them was middle class, whose monthly income was between a million won and two million won. The 72% of subjects mixed cereals(mainly barley, soybean) with rice but about 28% did not. Domestic meals except general Korean meals were bibimbab and kimblb. Major noodles at home was ramen and kalgugsu(home made noodle) and 50% of the subjects took the noodle with small amounts of steamed rice. The 41% of subjects took the gug(Korean soup) in every meal and the major soup was vegetable doengang soup, sea mustard soup, beef soup and soybean sprout soup in order. The 87% of subjects took either soup or pot stew, and doenjang pot stew and kimchi pot stew were mainly used. The number of side dishes except soup, pot stew and kimchi was 3∼4. The side dishes in meat was cooked mainly with beef and pork. The favorite cooking type of fish is roasting one. Two kinds of kimchi were served in every meal and the major kimchi was cabbage kimchi, kkagdugi(radish cube kimchi), yulmu kimchi in order. The major meal of eating out was galbitang and bibibbab in Korean style, jjajangmyon in Chinese one, pork cutlet in western one and hamburger as a fast food.

This experiment was conducted to determine standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIAAD) of commonly used feed ingredients in poultry diets in Pakistan. These feed ingredients included corn, rice broken (RB), rice polishings (RP), wheat bran (WB), sunflower meal (SFM), cottonseed meal (CSM), guar meal (GM), soybean meal (SBM) from India and Argentine and fish meal (FM). The SIAAD of each ingredient was determined in triplicate using 21-days-old broilers. Day-old male broiler chicks (Hubbard${\times}$ Hubbard) were reared on corn-SBM based diet from 1 to 13 days and thereafter birds were fed experimental diets from day 14 to 21. Each diet was fed to 36 birds kept in six replicate cages, each cage had six birds. In cereals, the SIAAD of corn's amino acid (AA) (90.1%) was similar (p>0.05) to RB (89.0%). Isoleucine (97.8%) and lysine (96.9%) were highly digestible AA in corn and RB, respectively. Among cereal-by products, WB's SIAAD (76.9%) was same (p>0.05) as RP (71.9%). Arginine from WB (82.5%) and RP (83.2%) was highly digestible. However, threonine in WB (72.7%) and leucine in RP (69.6%) were the lowest digestible AAs. In plant protein meals, AAs from Argentine-SBM (85.1%) and Indian-SBM (83.4%) had higher (p<0.5) SIAAD than other protein meals. However, SIAAD of SFM (77.1%) and CSM (71.7%) was intermediate while GM (60.3%) exhibited the lowest (p<0.05) SIAAD among all ingredients. Arginine from GM (76.9%), CSM (85.8%), SBM-India (89.5%) and SBM-Argentine (91.5%) was highly digestible from indispensable AAs. In SFM, methionine (91.4%) SIAAD was the greatest. The average SIAAD of FM was 77.6%. Alanine from FM had the highest (84.0%) but cysteine (62.8%) had the lowest SIAAD. In conclusion, cereals i.e. corn and RB had higher (p<0.05) SIAAD of the cereals by-products. The SIAAD of RP and WB was same (p>0.05). The SBM from plant protein meals had higher (p<0.05) SIAAD than other studied feed ingredients. However, the GM had the lowest (p<0.05) SIAAD among protein meals.
This study was aimed to examine nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and eating habits of elementary school students and to examine if their characteristics differ by gender. Subjects were 5th and 6th graders of an elementary school (n = 317) in Seoul, and the survey was done during July 2007. Mean height, weight, BMI of subjects was 148.1 cm. 41.7 kg, 19.0, and 14.3% of subjects were categorized as the overweight/obese group. Anthropometric data were not significantly different by gender. Mean score of nutrition knowledge was 14.9 out of 20 showing moderate knowledge levels, and girls scored higher on nutrition knowledge than boys (p < 0.05). Subjects showed knowledge deficit in areas such as nutrients, food groups and specific weight control information. The percentages of correct answers regarding meals for brain function were significantly higher in girls than in boys (p < 0.05). They got nutrition information mainly from mass media and family/relatives. The mean score of dietary attitudes was 41.2 (possible score: 10-50) indicating somewhat positive attitudes, and the score of eating behaviors was 34.8 (possible score: 15-45). Subjects showed problems in eating habits such as having unbalanced diets and snack foods. 82.6% of subjects had unbalanced meals, and these percentages were higher in girls (87.2%) than in boys (78.1%, p < 0.05). Vegetables and fish/shellfish were the most disliked foods. Specific eating behaviors, such as eating slowly, eating grains and having processed foods less frequently, were better in girls than in boys (p < 0.05). Results also showed that majority of subjects need to improve specific behaviors including having diverse foods, eating meals slowly, having meals at regular times, having adequate foods in each food groups, and eating sweets or salty foods less frequently. Only 52.7% of subjects perceived their body images as normal, and 56.4% had experience of weight control. Reasons for weight control were different by gender (p < 0.05). Based on these findings, nutrition education for school children should focus on modifying eating habits or eating behaviors, by suggesting practically applicable methods and providing nutrition information that is interesting and suitable to school-aged children.
The Purpose of this study was to investigate the food preferences of college students of Korea. The survey was conducted on november, 1981 through the questionnaires. The subjects were 1184 male and 1241 female students of 9 universities. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1) Preferences of staple foods : Cooked rice was preferred most by the subjects. Male liked rice more than female, whereas female liked bread and noodle more than male. Among the different kinds of rice, bread, and noodles, the following food items were favored by the subjects. (plain rice, red bean rice and soybean rice ; salad bread and vegetable bread ; Nangmyun and Bibim Kooksu). The foods not preferred were barley rice, instant noodle and soybean milk noodle. 2) Preference of side - dishes : Among the kinds of side - dishes by different preparation methods, stews were the most favored and the next favored were soups by the subiecls whereas female showed lower preference of soups than male subjects Most disliked kinds of side-dishes were changachi and moochim. For example, side-dishes which showed higher preference in each preparation method were stew (Kimchi stew and Soybean paste stew), soup (Beef soup and Seaweed soup), kimchi (Korean cabbage Kimchi), Bockeum (Sauted beef and Sauted Kimchil, cheon(Beef Cheon, fish Cheon), Kui(broiled saury and broiled yellow tail runner), Chorim(braised cuttle fish and braised fish cake), Namul(sliced radish, cucumber, and spinachi), and Changachi (dried radish). The side-dishes which showed lower preference were Alaskan pollack soup, soybean curd residue stew, cabbage Kimchi, liver Cheon, sauted liver, hairtail Chorim, radish rootNamul, and dried radish root Changachi. 3) Preferences of snacks. Fruits apple, peach, pear) were the most preferred snacks by the subjects. Male preferred ginsang tea whereas famale preferred coffee. Both bate and female subjects showed higher preference of milk and lower preference of sweets. 4) Preference of one-dish meals : No one dish meal were disliked by the subjects. Male liked Bockeum-Bab more than female, and female liked Mandukuk more than male subjects.

A feeding trial of two extruded pellets (EPI, 45% crude protein with 7% crude lipid and EP2, 47% crude protein with 10% crude lipid)${\times}$ two satiation rates (satiation and 80% satiation)${\times}$ three feeding frequencies (three, two and one meal a day) factorial design with three replications was carried out to investigate the optimum feeding frequency and satiation rate for growth of juvenile flounder. Flounder averaging 55 g were fed a extruded pellets for 58 days. Daily feed intake was affected by dietary composition, feeding frequency and satiation rate (P<0.05). Weight gain of fish fed the EP1 and EP2 was not affected by both dietary composition and feeding frequency (P>0.05), but affected by feeding satiation rate (P<0.05). Weight gain of fish fed the each of EP1 and EP2 twice daily with satiation was the highest among treatments, but was not significantly different to that of fish fed the diets three times daily with satiation feeding. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of the fish were not affected by dietary composition, feeding frequency and satiation rate (P>0.05). Moisture, crude protein and crude lipid contents of the muscle of fish were affected by satiation rate. Moisture and crude protein contents of the liver were affected by dietary composition. Based on fish performance results, it can be concluded that the proper feeding frequency for the growth of juvenile flounder grown from 55 g to 90 g is two meals a day with satiation feeding, regardless of dietary composition used in this study.

Two feeding trials were carried out to investigate apparent nutrient digestibility of flounder fed experimental diets containing different levels of macro-nutrients by satiation feeding rate (Exp-1) and feeding frequency (Exp-2). Triplicate groups of fish averaging 280 g were fed three experimental diets which contained different levels of carbohydrate, protein and lipid by two feeding regimes (satiation and 80% satiation) and four feeding frequencies (three meals a day, two meals a day, one meal a day and one meal every two days). Feces were collected using a fecal collection column attached to fish rearing tanks for 6 weeks. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, protein, lipid, energy and carbohydrate were not affected by feeding satiation rate in Exp-1. Apparent protein digestibility was not affected by feeding frequency, whereas affected by dietary composition in Exp-2. Apparent protein digestibility of fish fed a high-protein diet showed a tendency to become higher compared to that of fish fed high-carbohydrate diet and high-lipid diet at the same feeding frequency. Apparent lipid digestibility was not affected by dietary composition, however, affected by feeding frequency. Apparent digestibilities of energy and carbohydrate were affected by both dietary composition and feeding frequency. Apparent digestibities of energy and carbohydrate in fish fed the high-protein diet showed a tendency to become higher compared to that of fish fed the high-carbohydrate diet and high-lipid diet at the same feeding frequency. Apparent digestibities of energy and carbohydrate tended to decrease with increasing of feeding frequency at the same dietary composition.
The effectiveness of hot thermal retention system which was being used in 3 general hospitals, A,B, and C in Seoul was evaluated in terms of time-temperature relationship. The results of the study were summrized as follows: 1) The serving temperature of steamed rice using insulated bowls were significantly higher than those of using no thermal support. 2) The serving temperatures of soup using insulated bowls were significantly higher than those of using no thermal support. 3) The serving temperatures of meat of fish dishes using insulated bowls as well as warmer cabinet were significantly higher than other groups such as using warmer cabinet only, using insulated bowls only, and using no thermal support. 4) However surveyed serving temperatures of meals using hot thermal retention system were not whthin the range of temperature criteria.
Interviews of 208 women concerning dietary changes during pregnancy were under-rtaken from September 1986 to January 1987 at the medical centers in Seoul and Kyung Ki. 84% of the total subjects felt the morning sicksnes such as nausea and vomiting within the first trimester of pregnancy. There was a significant correlation between the experience of moring sickness and some environmental factors such as school carreer, food intake in early pregnancy, the number of meals and taking of medicines for promoting nutrition. Foods for which specifie cravings were frequently cited were fruits, meats, cold noodle, noodle and chinese food. Foods of aversions were Kimchi, meats, fish and fatted foods. With regard to beverage, there were the increase in milk and fruint juices consumption and the decrease in coffee ingestion during early pregnancy primarily attributed the concern for feto-maternal health. Possible explanation for these changes associated with pregnancy discussed.
Omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) may be beneficial for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events (CVEs), especially in patients with myocardial infarction or heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. For this purpose, one to two seafood meals per week is preferentially recommended. Omega-3 fatty acids with a high-dose EPA formula (4 g/day) may be more effective than EPA+DHA mixed supplements for the secondary prevention of CVE. Krill oil also contains omega-3 fatty acids, but at a much lower dose compared to fish oil. Supplemental vitamins and minerals have not shown the preventive effects on CVE in prospective, and randomized clinical trials, except for one Chinese study showing the stroke prevention effects of folic acid. The clinical benefit of chelation therapy in reducing CVEs is uncertain.
