  • The mass mortality of Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli that occured at the fish farms in Tongyeong and Geoje City regions between late August and early September in 2006 was investigated. Sixty two fish showed no significant external symptoms except ulcerative lesions with reddish foci on the skin. From the internal observations and diagnosis results, some yellowish brown liver, intestine bleeding, atrophy and congestion in the abdominal cavity of the fish were found. In the gill, swelled filaments caused by foreign material accumulation and mucus secretion were observed. However, the main cause of the fish mass mortality in both sampling regions could be due to physiological weakness induced by significant change of water temperature causing by typhoon Wookong during the summer in 2006.

  • The aim of the present study was to determine the acute and subacute potential of trichlorfon in guppies (Poecilia reticulatus). We first defined the 24 h median tolerance limit ($TLm_{24h}$) of the fish to trichlorfon. Guppies were then treated with $TLm_{24h}$ and 1/10 $TLm_{24h}$ trichlorfon concentrations to evaluate if any histological alterations occurred. The $TLm_{24h}$ value of trichlorfon was 11 ppm. This concentration resulted in acute toxicity to the gills and kidneys with edema, hyperplasia of the gill lamellae, and vacuolated degeneration and necrosis of renal tubular cells. In the case of subacute toxicity using a 10-fold dilution of the $TLm_{24h}$ value (1.1 ppm), no behavioral changes, external lesions or histopathological changes were observed. Therefore, safe concentration of trichlorfon might be 1.1 ppm in guppy for controlling parasitic infections.

Acute and subacute toxicity of fumonisin B1 to fingerlings of common carp, Cyprinus carpio (잉어치어(稚魚)에 대한 곰팡이독(fumonisin B1)의 급성(急性) 및 아급성독성(亞急性毒性)에 관한 연구)

  • The acute and subacute toxicity of fumomsin $B_1$ was evaluted in fingerlings of common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Dipping of fish for acute toxicity was performed for a period of 48 hours, and the $TLm_{48h}$ value(median tolerance limit) was more than 1000 ppm in common carp. Severe damages were observed in various organs and among them, clubbing of gill lamella, lytic degeneration and vacuolation of liver cells, and epithelial edema of renal tubules were relatively prominent. The most significant changes were hyperbasophilic foci of liver cells in subacute toxicity test and these can imply the possibility of hepatocarcinogenecity of fumonisin $B_1$.

  • This is the first report of Fowlerichthys scriptissimus (Lophiiformes, Antennariidae) from Korea. A single specimen (291.0 mm SL) was collected off the coast of Jejudo Island by gill net on 28 March 2012 and identified with morphological and molecular approaches. The specimen is characterized by having all five pelvic fin rays bifurcate and possessing 20 vertebrae, 13 pectoral-fin rays, and a basidorsal ocellus on the side of the body. This species is distinguishable from other Korean taxa by the number of pectoral fin rays, the bifurcate form of the pelvic rays, and the vertebral count. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and suggest new Korean names, "Byeol-ssin-beng-i-sok" and "Byeol-ssin-beng-i" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • A single specimen (134.3 mm standard length) of a snailfish, Careproctus notosaikaiensis was collected from a fish trap in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, East Sea, Korea. It is characterized by having the teeth strongly trilobed; dorsal fin rays 52; anal fin rays 47; pectoral fin rays 35; caudal fin rays 10; vertebrae 58; ribs 2 pairs; cephalic pores, 2-6-7-2; gill slit extending to the fifth pectoral fin ray; chin pores paired and equal in size; dorsal and anal fins with distinct reddish margins. We describe this species as the first record to Korea, and proposed the new Korean name, "Dong-hae-bun-hong-ggom-chi" for this species.

  • A single specimen of Brama orcini (267.0 mm standard length, SL), belonging to the family Bramidae, was collected by purse seine from Jeju Strait, Korea, in December 2013. The specimen is characterized by having 16 gill rakers, 54 lateral line scales, and 36 vertebrae. B. orcini is distinguished from the most similar species, Brama japonica, by the number of lateral line scales (52-54 in B. orcini vs. 65-75 in B. japonica). We propose a new Korean name "Keun-bi-neul-sae-da-rae" for B. orcini.

  • Zebrafish were exposed to commercial silver nanoparticles (${\sim}$10-20 nm) at 0.4 and 4 ppm during cadual fin regeneration. The silver was in the $Ag^+$ ionic form. Fin regeneration was slow in the group exposed to the lower concentration. The cadual fin, gill, and muscle were assayed after 48 hours and subjected to histological analysis. In all tissues sampled, fish exposed to nanoparticles exhibited infiltration, large mitochondria with empty matrices, and accumulation of nano-sized silver in blood vessels. The results suggested mitochondrial damage and induction of inflammation. Microarray analysis of RNA from young zebrafish (52 hours post-fertilization) that were exposed to nanometer-sized silver particles, showed alteration in expression of the p53 gene pathway related to apoptosis. Gene expression changes in the nanoparticle-treated zebrafish led to phenotypic changes, reflecting increased apoptosis.

  • The breeding season of the bivalve, Lamprotula coreana , was observed in the vicinity of Achun-Ri of the Han River under the natural conditions. The effect of temperatures on spawning and attaching periods of the glochidia was also investigated in the laboratory. 1. The breeding season of Lamprotula coreana was lasted from October to April in the next year. The glochidia of Lamprotula coreana were observed in the outer gill layers, therefore they beling to the exobrachiae. 2. Each spawning of glochidia of Lamprotula coreana ended within 15, 12 , 7 and 5 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$, 2$0^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$of water temperatures respectively. 3. The attaching period of glochidia of the Lamprotula coreana onto fish was longer at a low temperature than at higher one.

  • The karyotype analysis of Kichulchoia brevifasciata was carried out, known as an end-angered small endemic cobitid fish of Korea. Five females and one male were collected from Geum-san-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea and its gill, kidney and digestive tract tissues were treated by flame-drying technique. The karyotype was found to be 2n= 48 from 33 cells; 16 meta-submetacentric and 32 subtelo-telocentric chromosomes; 64 FN (fundamental number). This karyotype showed a remarkably different karyotype formula from Niwaella multifasciata which is closely related to this species.

  • This study evaluated the external form of Rhodeus notatus TSV (transparent-scaled variant) type identified in Korea for the first time and compared it with that of the normal type. The TSV units newly found on Rhodeus notatus are iii10 of dorsal fin and anal fin iii10, which are similar to that in the normal type, considering the observing coefficient of each part's fins. The external form is, transparent enough to see the red gill filament in the operculum, the spiral digestive organ is observed opaquely, and numerous melanophores are stained at the upper part of abdomen. The coloration and scales are different between TSV type and normal type; however, there is no difference in the external form and meristic character.
