The total energy of fish movement and the maximum burst swimming speed were estimated and formulated in accordance with body length and water temperature for several species in fisheries by empirical methods and also by using published results. Under the assumption of swimming energy reserve of a fish at the initial rest state, the swimming endurance of fish with different body lengths, swimming speeds and angular velocity was calculated using the relevant equations under similar conditions in tank experiments as well as natural conditions in field. Relative swimming energy efficiency or the transition swimming speed between red and white muscle for energy consumption was represented as a trigonometric function of swimming speed ratio. Therefore, this model does closely approach the actual swimming abilities and their limits especially in relation to the fishing gear operation and allow for the greater vitality of the wild fish in the fields.
A 12 week growth study was carried out to investigate the supplemental effects of dietary garlic powder (GP) on growth, feed utilization and whole body composition changes of fingerling sterlet sturgeon Acipenser ruthenus (averaging weight, 5.5 g). Following a 24-h fasting, 540 fish were randomly distributed to each of 18 tanks (30 fish/tank) under a semi-recirculation freshwater system. The GP of 0.5% (GP0.5), 1% (GP1), 1.5% (GP1.5), 2% (GP2) and 3% (GP3) was added to the control diet (GP0) containing 43% protein and 16% lipid. After the feeding trial, weight gain (WG) of fish fed GP1.5, GP2 and GP3 were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of fish fed GP0, GP0.5 and GP1. Feed efficiency and specific growth rate (SGR) showed a similar trend to WG. Protein efficiency ratio of fish fed GP1.5, GP2, and GP3 were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of fish groups fed the other diets. A significant difference (p<0.05) was found in whole body composition (moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash, and fiber) of fish at the end of the experiment. Significantly higher (p<0.05) protein and lipid retention efficiencies (PRE and LRE) were also found in GP1.5, GP2, and GP3 groups. Broken-line regression model analysis and second order polynomial regression model analysis relation on the basis of SGR and WG indicated that the dietary optimal GP level could be greater than 1.77% and 1.79%, but less than 2.95% and 3.18% in fingerling sterlet sturgeon. The present study suggested that dietary GP for fingerling sterlet sturgeon could positively affect growth performance and protein retention.
This study was carried out to investigate the supplemental effects of dietary garlic extract (GE) on growth performance of juvenile sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus). The first experiment was designed to determine the optimum levels of garlic extract as growth promoter during 10 weeks. Three groups (two replicates/group) of 240 fish with mean body weight of 85 g were fed with diets containing 0 (control), 0.5 and 1.0% of GE. The highest weight gain (%) and feed efficiency (%) were found in fish groups fed with diet containing 0.5% GE. Subsequently, the supplemental effects of dietary GE was studied on growth of juvenile sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus) with an average body weight of 59.6 g. Fish cultured in freshwater were randomly allotted to each of 10 tanks (two groups of five replicates, 20 fish/tank) and fed diets with 0.5% GE or without GE (control), respectively, at the level of 2.0% of fish body weight per day for 5 weeks. Weight gain (51.1%), feed efficiency (79.1%), specific growth rate (1.18%) and protein efficiency ratio (1.50) of fish fed 0.5% GE were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those fish fed the control diet. Significantly higher protein (PRE 20.4%) and lipid retention efficiencies (LRE, 74.5%) were also found in 0.5% GE group (p<0.05). The present results suggested that dietary GE could improve growth and feed utilization of juvenile sterlet sturgeons.

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimum dietary protein requirement of young far eastern catfish Silurus asotus. Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (35, 40, 45, 50, and 55%). Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 44 g) were hand-fed to apparent satiation for 9-weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed 55% protein diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed 35 and 40% protein diets, but not significantly different from those of fish fed 45 and 50% protein diets. The feed efficiency of fish fed 50 and 55% protein diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed 35, 40 and 45% protein diets. The protein efficiency ratio of fish fed 40% protein diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed 45, 50 and 55% protein diets, but not significantly different from that of fish fed 35% protein diet. The dietary protein level significantly affected whole body lipid and moisture contents. The results of this study suggest that the 45% protein in the diet is optimal for maximum growth of young far eastern catfish weighing in the range of 44 to 227 g.

The effects of dietary supplementing natural additives [yacon (YC), ginger (GG), and blueberry (BB)] on growth, feed utilization, and body composition of juvenile rockfish were compared to those of ethoxyquin (EQ), which is commonly used to prevent rancidity of fish feed. A total of 480 fish were distributed randomly into 12 50-L flow-through tanks (40 fish/tank). Four experimental diets were prepared: the control diet (Con) with 0.01% EQ, and the YC, GG and BB diets containing 1% YC, GG, and BB instead of wheat flour. Each diet was assigned randomly to triplicate tanks of fish, which were hand fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. Weight gain of fish fed the YC diet was higher than that of fish fed all other diets. Feed efficiency (FE), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and protein retention (PR) in fish fed the YC diet were higher than those in fish fed the other diets. Whole-body chemical composition of the fish was affected by the additive sources. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with GG effectively improved weight gain and feed utilization (FE, PER, and PR) of juvenile rockfish.
The influences of fish oil and different levels of vitamin I supplement on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis have been studied. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received diethylnitrosamine (DEN)(200mg/kg body weight) and were subjected to two-thirds partial hepatectomy to induce murine chemical hepatocarcinogenic procedure. Placental glutathione S-transferase(GST-P) positive foci area, antioxidant enzymes(Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, glutathione reductase (GR), total- glutathione peroxidase (TGPx), glutathione S -transferase (GST)), glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activities, and lipid peroxidation of microsomes(thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)) were measured. Experimental animals were fed 15% corn or fish oil with 0, 40, 1,000, 10,000IU vitamin E /kg diet for 8 weeks. Vitamin E supplements decreased the area of GST-P positive foci in both groups. The higher the vitamin E levels, the smaller the area of GST-P positive foci were noticed. Compared to 0 IU vitamin E, 40 IU in corn oil and 1,000 IU in fish oil groups were effective in decreasing G57-P positive foci area. Fish oil groups tended to have smaller area of GST-P positive foci. fish oil groups showed lower body weight, lower activities of Cu/Zn-SOD and TGPx, higher TBARS contents, higher activities of GST, catalase, G6Pase, GR and higher liver/body ratio than corn oil groups. As the level of vitamin I increased, GST-P positive foci count, catalase activities, and TBARS tended to decrease. G6Pase activities tended to increase in both groups. At higher vitamin E levels, GST activities tended to decrease in fish oil groups. These results suggest that vitamin I has suppressive offects on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis probably through antioxidant eH:cts decreasing TBARS contents, $H_2O$$_2$, and organic peroxides. fish oil tended to have greated suppressive offects than corn oil on hepatocellular carcinogenesis. We determined the morphologic characteristics (body weight and degree of abdomen inflation) of the red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara, mother fish producing healthy eggs. Experimental fish were chosen from fish reared in a sea cage. The fish were divided into four size groups by body weight: 400~600, 600~800, 800~1,000, and 1,000~1,200 g and four stages (I~IV) of the degree of abdomen inflation. After hormone treatment, we observed the amount of ovulation-induced eggs, and rates of buoyancy, fertilization, embryonic survival, and hatching. As a result, mother fish with a body weight of 600 g or more spawned, and the fertilization rate, embryonic survival rate, and hatching rate were high in the 800~1,000 g range, thus showing effective ovulation induction. As a result of dividing the degree of abdomen inflation based on the anal fin of the mother fish into I-IV stages and determining hormone treatment time, the GSI was $0.9{\pm}0.2%$ at stage I, $2.3{\pm}0.2%$ at stage II, $5.6{\pm0.2%$ at stage III, and $7.9{\pm}0.9%$ at stage IV. The flotation rate and hatching rate were highest at stage III, and the fertilization rate and embryonic survival rate were highest at stage IV. Therefore, in terms of egg quality, the amount of eggs collected per mother fish, maturation, and histology were different depending on the degree of abdomen inflation. At stage III, where the abdomen inflation degree of the mother fish was based on the basal part of the dorsal fin relative to the height of the anal fin was 1, the egg quality was highest.

This paper describes about the behavior of the lseraeli carp (Cyprinus cartio. body length 43cm) and the Red seabream (Chrysophrys major. body length 35cm) aquacultured by telemetry techniques. The telemetry system consists of a pinger of 50kHz, three omni-directional hydrophones and ultrasonic receivers, a single board computer for the signal processing, two RF transceivers for the data communication, and a personnel computer. Those fish tagged the pingers were tracked by the LBL method, and its location was calculated by the hyperbolic method. The average speed of the lsraeli carp was about 1.0 times of the body length in a farming water tank (24$\times$24$\times$1m), and the Red seabream 1.3 times of the body length in a farming raft (10$\times$10$\times$5m). A variation of the speed of the lsraeli carp was higher than the other one.
A 12-week feeding trial was designed to evaluate the effect of total replacement of fish oil (FO) with terrestrial alternative oils on growth, feed utilization, body composition, hematological parameters, and fillet fatty acid profile of mandarin fish juveniles. Four iso-nitrogenous (56% crude protein) and iso-lipidic (13% crude lipid) practical diets were formulated. A control diet contained 6% FO and three other experimental diets were prepared by replacing FO with linseed oil, soybean oil, and lard (designed as FO, LO, SO, and lard, respectively). Each diet was randomly allocated to triplicate groups of 25 fish ($1.8{\pm}0.03g/fish$) in a circular tank. Complete replacement of FO by three tested alternative oils had no remarkable impact on growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and morphological and hematological parameters of juvenile mandarin fish. However, daily feed intake was found to be significantly higher for fish fed the SO diet compared with those fed the FO and LO diets. Fish fed LO and SO diets exhibited significantly higher levels of the whole body lipid compared to fish fed diet containing FO. Fillet fatty acid composition reflected dietary fatty acid profile. The highest level of ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid was observed in fish fillet fed LO, SO, and lard, respectively. Although the eicosapentaenoic acid level of fish fillet fed diet FO was higher than other treatments, no significant difference was found in docosahexaenoic acid content among all dietary groups. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that the complete replacement of FO in mandarin fish diets is achievable. These findings are useful in dietary formulation to reduce feed costs without compromising mandarin fish growth.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the immunosuppressive factor and immune response of color carp. The protection and serum antibody production of juvenile color carp aganist Aeromonas hydrophila were investigated on the effect of temperature differences and injected several aquatic drugs, i.e. Hydrocortisone, Oxytetracycline, Chloramphenicol and Ascorbic acid. The fish were injected intraperitoneally with 1mg/fish of HKC and FKC at three different temperature conditions as $16^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$, and $32^{\circ}C$ respectively. There were induced better protection and serum antibody production in the fish which had been kept at $24^{\circ}C$ than in the fish which had been kept at $16^{\circ}C$ and $32^{\circ}C$. The FKC immunized fish were followed 24 hrs later with intraperitoneal injection of 40mg/kg body weight of Hydrocortisone, 60mg/kg body weight of Oxytetracycline. 60mg/kg body weight of Chloramphenicol and 30mg/kg body weight of Ascorbic acid, respectively. The control fish were injected PBS only. The fish given the above aquatic drugs reduced serum antibody production level and protection rate when compared to control fish. As the results, immune response of juvenile color carp immunized FKC at $24^{\circ}C$ was more effective than $16^{\circ}C$ or $32^{\circ}C$ and immune response of juvenile color carp injected several aquatic drugs which was seemed to be immunosuppressive factor.
