  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of corporate governance practices such as (board size, board composition, CEO duality and audit committee) on the performance of selected Pakistani firms. Research design, data, and methodology - This study examines corporate governance structure by using the data of 80 non-financial firms listed on Karachi Stock Exchange Pakistan during 2010-2014. Hypotheses of the study were tested by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Result - The findings indicate that board size and audit committee is positively related to the firm performance (ROA & ROE). In contrast, board composition and CEO duality are negatively related to the firm performance (ROA & ROE). As far as controlling variables is concerned, leverage is negative, whereas firm size is positively related to all measures of performance. Conclusions - Empirical findings concluded that corporate governance practices affect the firm performance. Therefore, it is suggested that managers should understand the governance mechanisms to work more efficiently in the firm.

  • The research aims to investigate the determinants of the financial performance of 1343 Vietnamese companies categorized into six different industries listed on the Vietnamese Stock Exchange over a four-year period from 2014 to 2017 using STATA software. Those determinants include firm size, liquidity, solvency, financial leverage, and financial adequacy while the financial performance is evaluated by three different ratios: return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and return on sales (ROS). The research results from these companies during the given period indicate that: (1) Firm size has a positive impact on both ROA and ROS, especially ROA but it has the opposite effect on ROE, (2) Adequacy ratio impacts positively on ROA and ROS but negatively on ROE, (3) Financial leverage considerably negative influences on ROE and ROS but positively impacts on ROA, (4) Liquidity has a positive effect on both ROA and ROE but a negative one on ROS and (5) Solvency has a positive impact on ROA and ROS but the negative impact on ROE. Furthermore, agriculture accounted for the highest percentage of profitability at the beginning, which was replaced by service for ROA but manufacture for ROE from 2016 to 2017 as opposed to the least in transportation.

  • The higher the firm performance, the more chances enterprises can expand and develop their production, create jobs, and improve the workers' living quality. The main objective of this study was to measure the internal factors influencing the firm's performance of food and beverage (F&B) firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX). Data was collected on 15 F&B firms listed on the HNX from 2015 to 2019 We use mixed research method, both qualitative and quantitative. For the quantitative research method, the supporting tool is Stata13 software. The results via Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression method show the impacts of internal factors with the following observed variables: the ratio of short-term debt to total liabilities (CS1) and total assets (S2) have an opposite impact (-) on ROA and ROE; debt-to-total assets ratio (CS2) has an opposite effect (-) on ROA; growth of total assets (G2) of the growth factor positively affects (+) ROA and ROE, the remaining factors do not affect ROA and ROE; and internal factors do not influence ROS. Based on the findings, some recommendations have been proposed to help the F&B firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange improving their firm performance in the future.

  • Purpose: This study's objective is to examine the impact of firm-specific and macroeconomic factors on the business performance of non-cyclical and cyclical sectors in Indonesian listed firms. The evaluation of business performance holds paramount importance for the achievement and long-term viability of a company. Research Design Data and Methodology: The data for 61 non-cyclicals sector companies and 57 cyclicals sector companies was gathered over a 4-year period from 2018-2021. The model integrates firm size, leverage, and sales growth as firm-specific factors, with real GDP growth and inflation rate as macroeconomic variables. ROA and ROE are indicators of a firm's business performance. The regression models are estimated using the distribution of a dynamic approach with Arellano-Bond Panel Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation. Results: The results of the pooled sample indicate that the historical ROA and ROE have a positive relationship with the business performance of all sectors, including both non-cyclical and cyclical industries. The ROE of non-cyclical enterprises is primarily influenced by firm-specific characteristics and macroeconomic influences. Conclusion: To ensure the successful implementation of the distribution of a dynamic approach towards enhancing corporate business performance, organizations need to take into account a combination of firm-specific factors and macroeconomic factors.

  • Purpose - We examine how a Korean retail firm's social responsibility is related to its financial performances. The traditional view of corporation expects a negative relationship, while the stakeholder theory expects a positive one. Research design, data, and methodology - We adopt the ESG score, published by Korean Corporate Governance Service to measure the level of socially responsible activity for the Korean retail firms. The ordinary least square method is adopted to investigate this relationship. The publicly traded retail firms are examined from 2011 to 2016. Results - We find that the total ESG score is negatively related to ROE but shows no statistically significant relationship with ROA and Tobin's Q value. However, a firm's environmental score is negatively related with both of ROE and ROA. Its social score is no conclusive relationship with the performance measures. The governance score is negatively related to the value of Tobin's Q. Conclusions - This paper generally supports the traditional view of corporate theory, especially in terms of ROE. This evidence is not well aligned with the existing study for Korean corporations generally documenting positive relationships. We find almost no empirical evidence supporting the stakeholder theory of corporation in the Korean retail industry.

  • Past studies on the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on firms have been inconsistent, highlighting the significance of examining how CSR affects the performance of Malaysian government-linked companies (GLCs). The study aims to investigate the impact of CSR dimensions (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic) on firm performance from 2016 to 2020 using a sample of 31 GLCs from the top 100 companies under the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia. A total of 35 GLCs were selected as the study sample size based on the top 100 businesses listed under the board of Bursa Malaysia as of 31 December 2020. The study employed correlation and multiple linear regression models to examine the relationship between CSR dimensions and firm performance. Financial performance is evaluated using accounting-based models of return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) and market-based models of earnings per share (EPS) and market value (MV). The CSRHub database was employed to collect information on the performance of company CSR dimensions. The findings suggested a significant positive relationship between ethical and philanthropic CSR and firm performance regarding ROE. Thus, GLCs prioritized ethical and philanthropic CSR over other dimensions.

  • This paper investigates the association between key corporate governance characteristics and the performance of general insurance businesses listed on the Saudi stock exchange (TADAWUL). The methodology for the study is based on a pooled data collection for 11 Saudi general insurance companies from 2011 to 20. The linear regression model and the logarithm regression model are suggested to assess the relationship between performance and corporate governance characteristics. The dependent variable is firm performance measured using ROA, ROE, and Tobin's Q. The independent variables are corporate governance variables consisting of a complete set of board and audit committee characteristics. Insurer-specific control variables are introduced. The empirical results reveal that the characteristics of corporate governance influence the performance of insurance companies. In particular, the board size, board's tenure, the proportion of independent directors in the board, audit committee size, audit committee meeting frequency, and proportion of health insurance premiums have a positive impact. However, audit committee independence, size of the company, and proportion of reinsurance premiums have a negative impact on the performance of the Saudi general insurance companies. Finally, the empirical results indicated also that there is an unclear relationship between the performance and board meeting frequency, compensations of the Board, and the average age of the Board.
