In this study, the physical and chemical analyses of petroleum residues (pyrolized fuel oil, PFO) were conducted and major components were selected to investigate their fire and explosion characteristics. Major component distribution areas of the PFO were identified via the GC-SIMDIS and MALDI-TOF analyses. In addition, the qualitative analysis of major component distribution areas was performed by GC-MS analysis. Major components of pyrolysis residue were selected based on the results of various analyses such as EA, SARA and TGA. As a result, benzene, toluene and xylene were selected as major components. Finally, the process hazard analysis software tool (PHAST) analysis was performed to investigate the range of maximum damage effect in case of fire and explosion. Toluene presented the highest risk due to the radiation effect of $227kW/m^2$ and 118 m in the case of jet fire. Xylene and benzene showed the maximum radiant heat values of 114 and $151kW/m^2$, respectively. It was also confirmed from the analysis of pasquill stability and wind speed that the radiant heat increased up to 55% according to wind speed in benzene, which was considered to be a main factor increasing the influence range.
Antimicrobial peptides are widely distributed in nature and appear to play important roles in the host defense of plants and animals. In this study, we isolated and characterized three antimicrobial peptides from skin secretions of the oriental fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis. These purified peptides were referred to as P1, P2, and P3 in order of their elution. P1, P2, and P3 have molecular weights of 2569, 2566, and 2370 Da by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, respectively. They are heat-stable, amphipathic peptides of 24-27 amino acids without cysteine residues. All three peptides are active against representative gram negative and gram positive bacterial species, and in particular, P1 appears to have distinctive antifungal activity. However, no significant hemolytic activity was found for these peptides.
This paper studied the measurement about the gunpowder residue quantity by using a handgun and we carried out an experiment ignition characteristics of the gunpowder residue for the investigation fire cause into the indoor shooting range in Busan. The measurement of the gunpowder residue quantity is spouted by using a 0.38 inch gun and 9 mm gun. We were carried out evaluation experiments such as impact sensitivity test, static electricity sensitivity test, friction sensitivity test and measuring a flash point for the ignition characteristics about the gunpowder residue. From experiment results, the impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of the gunpowder residue in comparison with ball powder are highly sensitive and the gunpowder residue ignites at a relatively low temperature.

In this paper, the architecture of a safe stove with an automatic fire suppression function using a sound wave fire extinguisher has been proposed and developed for the first time. A microcontroller connected to a fire sensor detects and suppresses a fire by driving a fire extinguisher. The sound wave fire extinguisher is composed of a speaker and collimator, and is driven by a driver module including an audio amplifier. The attenuation of the sound wave is reduced by preventing the sound diffusion with an enclosure surrounding a stove. The frequency of the sound wave is set to 50 Hz, and the sound pressure of 93 dBA is measured at the distance of 0.5 m. It takes maximum 8 and 15 seconds to suppress the flame from 7-cc and 14-cc flammable liquid, respectively, which corresponds to 24% and 42% of the natural extinguishing time. Since the proposed safe stove is non-toxic and leaves no residues over the conventional ones, it would combine with various home appliances to suppress early-stage fires and prevent fire expansion.
There are among the most relevant toxic emissions from incinerators such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Induction of cytochrome P4501A1 catalyzed 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase(EROD) activity in mammalian cell culture(EROD bioassay) is thought to be a selective and sensitive parameter used for the quantification of dioxin-like components. In this study, the toxic emissions from several school waste incinerators were evaluated by determination of CYPIA catalytic activity and cytotoxicity using cell culture microbioassay. The incinerator residue and soil samples were collected from the schools located in Kyunggi province from April to June 1999. The samples were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus using toluene for 20 hours. In order to clean-up, concentrated crude extracts were applied to basic alumina column. The EROD activities of extracts in the H4IIE cells were from 1.91$\pm$0.32 ng-TEQ/g to 24.54$\pm$3.48 ng-TEQ/g of biochemical-TEQ value. In soil samples, CYP1A catalytic activity was 0.09~0.64 ng-TEQ/g. EROD bioassay, seems to be a useful short-term bioassay when information about the biological response of complex environmental samples is needed. Although further study is needed, these results indicate that the potent toxic emissions are produced from school waste semi-incinerators.
Candle fires do not occur frequently, but can easily result in death. In this study, the thermal characteristics of candles and conditions and debris of candle fires were investigated to determine the causes of candle fires. The rates of decrease in weight of 10 candles were measured and found to be between 2.6 g/h and 6.7 g/h. Most candle fires are caused by the ignitiong of combustible materials close to them. The temperature near a candle ranges from about $200^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$ at a distance of 1 cm and low ignition temperature materials such as papers can easily catch fire. The melting temperature of candles ranges between $50^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ and their major chemical components are fatty acids and normal hydrocarbons (over C20). Using pretreatment conditions involving the use of activated charcoal strips at $150^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, the fire debris including candle residues were analyzed using a Gas-chromatograph/Mass-spectrometer (GC/MS).
Sesame seed oil cakes are classified as the animal or plant origin among the flammable liquids, and the fire occurs due to the spontaneous ignition through the accumulation of heat during the storage of residues after the extraction of sesame oil. In order to elucidate the cause of the spontaneous ignition of sesame seed oil cakes, the thickness (3 cm, 5 cm, 7 cm and 14 cm) of the sample container was varied, and the spontaneous ignition temperature was measured depending on the storage volume. Thus, the spontaneous ignition temperature was measured to be 180 ℃ at the thickness of 3 cm, 160 ℃ at 5 cm, 145 ℃ at 7 cm and 130 ℃ at 14 cm. As the thickness of the sample container increased, the critical ignition temperature decreased, and the induction time to spontaneous ignition and the time to reach the maximum temperature became longer. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy by the critical ignition temperature, which is the average temperature of ignition and non-ignition, was 97.10 [kJ/mol]. With these data, ignition characteristics of sesame seed oil cakes were determined.
This study is an analysis of combustion characteristics of synthetic insulation materials such as houses and warehouses. Using combustion cone calorimeter and SEM, the researching has experimented combustion characteristics of four kinds of materials such as flame retardant styrofoam, general styrofoam, urethane and gypsum board. And analyzed. As a result of the test, the ignition time (TTI) for the thermal insulation material was found at 27 s~43 s, and the flame retardant styrofoam was ignited at the lowest TTI at 27 s and disappears at 28 s. In addition, the maximum heat release rate (peak HRR) and average heat release rate (mean HRR) of each material were expressed in the following order: urethane> flame retardant styrofoam> styrofoam> gypsum board. Also, the total smoke release ($m^2/m^2$) was the largest at $30.798m^2/m^2$ in flame-retardant styrofoam. The general CO concentration of styrofoam was 0.275 kg/kg and the emission concentration was 12.807 kg/kg. The residues showed the highest 0.029 g in the gypsum board among the above materials.

The coniferous fallen leaf is one of the major forestry residues. Since the coniferous fallen leaf would not be easily decayed, the large amount of the coniferous fallen leaves in forestry could be the source of forest fire. The applicability of the fallen leaves to the pulp mold were evaluated for developing new utilization of coniferous fallen leaves. The morphological properties and the chemical composition of the fallen leaves of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were evaluated by the comparison with those of fresh leaves. The applicability of the coniferous fallen leaves to the pulp mold and the effects on the pulp mold properties including the scent diffusion were investigated. The fallen leaves showed the shrunk structure by losing the hot water extract component, which leaded to better grinding properties than that of fresh leaves. The pulp mold with fallen leaves showed higher strength properties than the pulp mold with fresh leaves. Although the scent of the pulp mold with fresh leaves was stronger, the pulp mold with fallen leaves had coniferous scent too. The application of fallen leaves to pulp mold for the functional properties could be possible by improving the mechanical properties and the scent lasting treatments.
