  • In 2007, 9,128 fires were actually caused by electrical faults and these fires resulted in 29 deaths and 262 injuries. Arc-faults were one of the major causes of these fires. When an unintended arc-fault occurs, it generates intense heat that can easily ignite surrounding combustibles. But, because conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents, the breakers do not protect against arcing conditions. This paper presents results obtained in experiments on ignition behavior of wire by series arc fault currents and techniques developed to detect the arc-faults. The developed technique was tested after installation to make sure that they are working properly and protecting the circuit. If the developed arc fault detection technique is applied, the electrical fires caused by an arc-fault can be reduced.

  • A public address (PA) system installed in a building is a system that delivers alerts, announcements, instructions, etc. in an emergency or disaster situation. As for the products used in PA systems, with the development of information and communication technology, PA products with various functions have been introduced to the market. PA systems recently launched in the market may be connected through a single network to enable efficient management and operation, or use voice recognition technology to deliver quick information in case of an emergency. In addition, a system capable of locating a user inside a building using a location-based service and guiding or responding to a safe area in the event of an emergency is being launched on the market. However, the new PA systems currently on the market add some functions to the existing PA system configuration to make system operation more convenient, but they do not change the complex PA system configuration to reduce facility costs, maintenance, and management costs. In this paper, we propose a novel PA system configuration for buildings using audio networks and control hierarchy over peer-to-peer (Anchor) technology based on audio over IP (AoIP), which simplifies the complex PA system configuration and enables convenient operation and management. As a result of the study, through the emergency signal processing algorithm, fire broadcasting was made possible according to the detection of the existence of a fire signal in the Anchor system. In addition, the control device of the PA system was replaced with software to reduce the equipment installation cost, and the PA system configuration was simplified. In the future, it is expected that the PA system using Anchor technology will become the standard for PA facilities.

  • Artificial intelligence technology is developing in an environment where a lot of data is produced due to the development of computing technology, a cloud environment that can store data, and the spread of personal mobile phones. Among these artificial intelligence technologies, the deep neural network provides excellent performance in image recognition and image classification. There have been many studies on image detection for forest fires and fire prevention using such a deep neural network, but studies on detection of cigarette smoking were insufficient. Meanwhile, military units are establishing surveillance systems for various facilities through CCTV, and it is necessary to detect smoking near ammunition stores or non-smoking areas to prevent fires and explosions. In this paper, by reflecting experimentally optimized numerical values such as activation function and learning rate, we did the detection of smoking pictures and non-smoking pictures in two cases. As experimental data, data was constructed by crawling using pictures of smoking and non-smoking published on the Internet, and a machine learning library was used. As a result of the experiment, when the learning rate is 0.004 and the optimization algorithm Adam is used, it can be seen that the accuracy of 93% and F1-score of 94% are obtained.

  • This paper proposes a diagnosis to detecting poor contact fault and fault location. Electrical fire by poor contact fault of power cable occupied a large proportion in the total electrical installations. The proposed method has an object to prevent electrical fault in advance. But detecting poor contact fault is difficult to detect fault type and fault location by using conventional reflectometry due to faults generated intermittently and repeatedly on the time change. Therefore, in this paper poor contact fault and fault conditions were defined. System generating poor contact fault produced for the experimental setup. SSTDR and algorithm of reference signal elimination heighten performance detecting poor contact fault on live power cable. The diagnosis methods of signal process and analysis of reflected signal was proposed for detecting poor contact fault and fault location. The poor contact fault and location had been detected through proposed diagnosis methods. The fault location and error rate of detection were verified detecting accuracy by experiment results.

  • Smart ships related studies are being conducted in various fields owing to the development of technology, and an engine room patrol robot that can patrol the unmanned engine room is one such study. A patrol robot moves around the engine room based on the information learned through artificial intelligence and checks the machine normality and occurrence of abnormalities such as water leakage, oil leakage, and fire. Study on engine room patrol robots is mainly conducted on machine detection using artificial intelligence, however study on movement and control is insufficient. This causes a problem in that even if a patrol robot detects an object, there is no way to move to the detected object. To secure maneuverability to quickly identify the presence of abnormality in the engine room, this study experimented with whether a patrol robot can determine the shortest path by applying the A* algorithm. Data were obtained by driving a small car equipped with LiDAR in the ship engine room and creating a map by mapping the obtained data with SLAM(Simultaneous Localization And Mapping). The starting point and arrival point of the patrol robot were set on the map, and the A* algorithm was applied to determine whether the shortest path from the starting point to the arrival point was found. Simulation confirmed that the shortest route was well searched while avoiding obstacles from the starting point to the arrival point on the map. Applying this to the engine room patrol robot is believed to help improve ship safety.

  • Along with economic growth and industrial development, there is an increasing demand for various electronic components and device production of semiconductor, SMT component, and electrical battery products. However, these products may contain foreign substances coming from manufacturing process such as iron, aluminum, plastic and so on, which could lead to serious problems or malfunctioning of the product, and fire on the electric vehicle. To solve these problems, it is necessary to determine whether there are foreign materials inside the product, and may tests have been done by means of non-destructive testing methodology such as ultrasound ot X-ray. Nevertheless, there are technical challenges and limitation in acquiring X-ray images and determining the presence of foreign materials. In particular Small-sized or low-density foreign materials may not be visible even when X-ray equipment is used, and noise can also make it difficult to detect foreign objects. Moreover, in order to meet the manufacturing speed requirement, the x-ray acquisition time should be reduced, which can result in the very low signal- to-noise ratio(SNR) lowering the foreign material detection accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a five-step approach to overcome the limitations of low resolution, which make it challenging to detect foreign substances. Firstly, global contrast of X-ray images are increased through histogram stretching methodology. Second, to strengthen the high frequency signal and local contrast, we applied local contrast enhancement technique. Third, to improve the edge clearness, Unsharp masking is applied to enhance edges, making objects more visible. Forth, the super-resolution method of the Residual Dense Block (RDB) is used for noise reduction and image enhancement. Last, the Yolov5 algorithm is employed to train and detect foreign objects after learning. Using the proposed method in this study, experimental results show an improvement of more than 10% in performance metrics such as precision compared to low-density images.
