The remeshing is a method to replace a distorted mesh by a new mesh without interrupting the finite element calculation. The remeshing procedure in this paper refers to the rezoning, for which a sm oothing process is developed to alleviate the distortions of mesh. In the paper, an automatic finite element rezoning system with tetrahedral elements for large deformation analysis has been developed. Our smoothing process is composed of two steps, a surface smoothing and a volume smoothing. In the surface smoothing, checking the dihedral angle and projection on surface patch reduced the change of shape and nodes penetrating die. The constrained Laplacian smoothing has been employed for the volume smoothing process. The state variables are mapped from old mesh to new mesh by using volume coordinates within a tetrahedral element. All these procedures have been linked to the NIKE3D program As illustrated in the examples the overall strategy ensures a robust and efficient rezoning scheme for finite element simulation of metal-forming processes.

The combination of a bolt and nut is the element most widely used for connecting machines and structures. When a load is repetitively applied in the direction right angle to the bolt axis after the bolt and nut is fastened, the nut gradually becomes loose. To solve this problem, in this study, a new type of the loose-proof nut, called a lock nut, is developed. The lock nut is equipped with a spring, and the spring increases the axial force of the bolt. Then, the connection force between the bolt and nut is also augmented. Three dimensional finite element models for the bolt and spring are generated, and the change of the axial force of the bolt while the bolt is being inserted into the spring is analyzed using MSC/Marc, a commercial finite element program. Finally, the optimum shape of the spring is found according to the response surface analysis methodology. The optimization result is verified by comparing the variation of the axial force of the bolt when the bolt is inserted to the initial and optimized spring.

The paper deals with the applications of spectral finite element method to the dynamic analysis of framed foundations supporting high speed machines. Comparative performance of approximate dynamic stiffness methods formulated using static stiffness and lumped or consistent or average mass matrices with the exact spectral finite element for a three dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam element is presented. The convergence of response computed using mode superposition method with the appropriate dynamic stiffness method as the number of modes increase is illustrated. Frequency proportional discretisation level required for mode superposition and approximate dynamic stiffness methods is outlined. It is reiterated that the results of exact dynamic stiffness method are invariant with reference to the discretisation level. The Eigen-frequencies of the system are evaluated using William-Wittrick algorithm and Sturm number generation in the $LDL^T$ decomposition of the real part of the dynamic stiffness matrix, as they cannot be explicitly evaluated. Major's method for dynamic analysis of machine supporting structures is modified and the plane frames are replaced with springs of exact dynamic stiffness and dynamically flexible longitudinal frames. Results of the analysis are compared with exact values. The possible simplifications that could be introduced for a typical machine induced excitation on a framed structure are illustrated and the developed program is modified to account for dynamic constraint equations with a master slave degree of freedom (DOF) option.
Minimum weight design of the boom of an excavator with stress and displacement constraints was performed. The procedure of analysis consists of the following steps. The finite element model of the boom was built up by using 227 triangular plate elements each of which has three nodes. And then the finite element program was implemented and its accuracy was verified by comparing its results with those of the commercial structural analysis package-ANSYS 4.4A. For the constraints of stresses and displacements, the design sensitivities of those were computed using direct differentiation method. To verify the reliability of them the results were compared with those of the finite difference method. The optimum design value was obtained by using PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora)non-linear optimization program which adopts the active set strategy. Using the above results, minimum weight design of an excavator boom showed an effect of 27% reduction in weight.
The aim of this contribution is to present a new link/beam finite element suitable for electrothermo-structural analysis of uni-axially graded materials. Continuous polynomial variation of geometry and material properties will be considered. The element matrix and relations for solution of Joule's heat (and its distribution to the element nodes) have been established in the sense of a sequence method of a coupled problem solution. The expression for the solution of nodal forces caused by a continuously distributed temperature field has also been derived. The theoretical part of this contribution is completed by numerical validation, which proves the high accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed element. The results of the performed experiments are compared with those obtained using the more expensive multiphysical link element and solid element of the FEM program Ansys. The proposed finite element could be used not only in the multiphysical analysis of the current paths and actuators but also in analysis of other 1D construction parts made of composite or uni-axially graded materials.
Finite element method (FEM) is an effective quantitative method to solve complex engineering problems. The basic idea of FEM for a complex problem is to be able to find a solution by reducing the problem made simple. If mathematical tools are inadequate to obtain precise result, even approximate result, FEM is the only method that can be used for structural analyses. In FEM, the domain is divided into a large number of simple, small and interconnected sub-regions called finite elements. FEM has been used commonly for linear and nonlinear analyses of different types of structures to give us accurate results of plane stress and plane strain problems in civil engineering area. In this paper, FEM is used to investigate stress analysis of a shear wall which is subjected to concentrated loads and fundamental principles of stress analysis of the shear wall are presented by using matrix displacement method in this paper. This study is consisting of two parts. In the first part, the shear wall is discretized with constant strain triangular finite elements and stiffness matrix and load vector which is attained from external effects are calculated for each of finite elements using matrix displacement method. As to second part of the study, finite element analysis of the shear wall is made by ANSYS software program. Results obtained in the second part are presented with tables and graphics, also results of each part is compared with each other, so the performance of the matrix displacement method is demonstrated. The solutions obtained by using the proposed method show excellent agreements with the results of ANSYS. The results show that this method is effective and preferable for the stress analysis of shell structures. Further studies should be carried out to be able to prove the efficiency of the matrix displacement method on the solution of plane stress problems using different types of structures.

This paper presents a computer program for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis. With this computer program the fluid can be modeled by a spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid element which uses rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and near field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil is represented by the frequency dependent dynamic infinite elements. Sine this method models directly the fluid-structure-soil system it can be applied to the dynamci analysis of 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. For the purpose of verification dynamic analyses for tanks on a rigid foundation and on compliant embankment are carried out. Comparison of the present results with those by ANSYS program shows good agreement.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of prestressed concrete deep beams and to provide the data for development of improved design criteria. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. Hence, in this study, the computer program, named RCAHEST (reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. A bonded or unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. The proposed numerical method for the shear behavior of prestressed concrete deep beams is verified by comparing the analytical results with test data by others.
A general stiffener element which includes transverse shear deformation is formulated using the p-version finite element method. Hierarchic C/sup o/-shape functions, derived from Integrals of Legendre polynomials, are used to define the assembled stiffness matrix of the stiffener with respect to the local reference frame is transformed to the plate reference system by applying the appropriate transformation matrices in order to insure compatibility of displacements at the junction of the stiffener and plate. The transformation matrices which account for the orientation and the eccentricity effects of the stiffener with respect to the plate reference axes are used to find local behavior at the junction of the stiffener and the relative contributions of the plate and stiffener to the strength of the composite system. The results obtained by the p-version finite element method are comared with the results in literatures, especially those by the h-version finite element analysis program, MICROFEAP-II.

The postbuckling analysis of composite curved panels subjected to lateral loading was conducted by a nonlinear finite clement program, ACOS. Two kinds of graphite/epoxy composite materials, URN300 and USN 125 were tested to verify the finite element analysis. High stiffness composite material, URN300 curved panels showed the critical failure prior to initial buckling. On the contrary USN 125 curved panels showd no severe damage after snap-through. In both panels, the finite element and experimental results showed good agreement.
