The nonlinear finite element method with eight noded isoparametric quadrilateral element for concrete and two noded element for reinforcement is used for the prediction of the behavior of reinforcement concrete structures. The disturbed state concept (DSC) including the hierarchical single surface (HISS) plasticity model with associated flow rule with modifications is used to characterize the constitutive behavior of concrete both in compression and in tension which is named DSC/HISS-CT. The HISS model is applied to shows the plastic behavior of concrete, and DSC for microcracking, fracture and softening simulations of concrete. It should be noted that the DSC expresses the behavior of a material element as a mixture of two interacting components and can include both softening and stiffening, while the classical damage approach assumes that cracks (damage) induced in a material treated acts as a void, with no strength. The DSC/HISS-CT is a unified model with different mechanism, which expresses the observed behavior in terms of interacting behavior of components; thus the mechanism in the DSC is much different than that of the damage model, which is based on physical cracks which has no strength and interaction with the undamaged part. This is the first time the DSC/HISS-CT model, with the capacity to account for both compression and tension yields, is applied for concrete materials. The DSC model allows also for the characterization of non-associative behavior through the use of disturbance. Elastic perfectly plastic behavior is assumed for modeling of steel reinforcement. The DSC model is validated at two levels: (1) specimen and (2) practical boundary value problem. For the specimen level, the predictions are obtained by the integration of the incremental constitutive relations. The FE procedure with DSC/HISS-CT model is used to obtain predictions for practical boundary value problems. Based on the comparisons between DSC/HISS-CT predictions, test data and ANSYS software predictions, it is found that the model provides highly satisfactory predictions. The model allows computation of microcracking during deformation leading to the fracture and failure; in the model, the critical disturbance, Dc, identifies fracture and failure.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the interface debonding of RC beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet(CFS). The behavior of damaged RC beams strengthened with CFS is analytically investigated next using linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) approach and the finite element method. The study includes an investigation of the separation mode by interface fracture of the strengthening materials due to the interfacial shear and normal stresses. The numerical method is presented to obtain the value of interfacial fracture parameter such as the strain energy release rate. Based on the results of this study, it is found that the critical case occurs when the interfacial cracks occur within a short region of the flexural crack. The CFS strengthening has not an adequate factor of safety against interfacial debonding of CFS. Furthermore, for the thicknesses of the adhesive studied[1mm~3mm], it is no noticeable effect on the strain energy release rate.
This paper has presented an effective and accurate meso-scale finite element model for simulating the fracture process of concrete under compression-shear loading. In the proposed model, concrete is parted into four important phases: aggregates, cement matrix, interfacial transition zone (ITZ), and the initial defects. Aggregate particles were modelled as randomly distributed polygons with a varying size according to the sieve curve developed by Fuller and Thompson. With regard to initial defects, only voids are considered. Cohesive elements with zero thickness are inserted into the initial mesh of cement matrix and along the interface between aggregate and cement matrix to simulate the cracking process of concrete. The constitutive model provided by ABAQUS is modified based on Wang's experiment and used to describe the failure behaviour of cohesive elements. User defined programs for aggregate delivery, cohesive element insertion and modified facture constitutive model are developed based on Python language, and embedded into the commercial FEM package ABAQUS. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are firstly identified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones, and then it is used to investigate the effect of meso-structure on the macro behavior of concrete. The shear strength of concrete under different pressures is also involved in this study, which could provide a reference for the macroscopic simulation of concrete component under shear force.

If volumetric flaws such as bearing pad fretting flaws and debris fretting flaws are detected in the pressure tubes of pressurized heavy water reactors during in-service inspection, the initiation of fatigue cracks and delayed hydrogen cracking from the detected volumetric flaws shall be assessed by using elastic stress concentration factors in accordance with CSA N285.8-05. The CSA N285.8-05 presents only an approximate formula based on linear elastic fracture mechanics for the debris fretting flaw. In this study, an engineering formula considering the geometric characteristics of the debris fretting flaw in detail was derived using two-dimensional finite element analysis and Kinectrics, Inc.'s engineering procedure with slight modifications. Comparing the application results obtained using the derived formula with the three-dimensional finite element analysis results, it is found that the results obtained using the derived formula agree well with the results of the finite element analysis.

Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.

This paper concentrates on the finite element analysis of concrete structures considering the material nonlinearity and time-dependent structural behavior. Using the rotating crack model among the smeared cracking model, the structural behavior up to ultimate load is simulated, and concrete is assumed to be an orthotropic material. Especially to include the tension stiffening effect in bending behavior, a criterion based on the fracture mechanics concept is introduced and the numerical error according to the finite element mesh size can be minimized through the application of the proposed criterion. Besides, the governing equation for steel is systematized by embeded model to cope with the difficulty in modeling of complex geometry. Finally, to trace the structural behavior with time under cracked and/or uncracked section, an algorithm for the purpose of time-dependent analysis is formulated in plane stress-strain condition by the age-adjusted effective modulus method.

The mixed mode problem (I and II) of a peny-shaped interface cracks in remote tension loading on a bi-material cylinder is studied using finite element method. The energy release rates for the tip of the crack in the interface were calibrated for several different moduli combinations and crack ratios using the modified crack closure integral technique and J-integral method, with numerical results obtained from a commercial finite element program. Numerical results show that non-dimensional value of$\sqrt{G_{II}E^*}/\sqrt[p]{\pi a}$ increases as the crack size or moduli ratio increases. Meanwhile, non-dimensional value of$\sqrt{G_{I}E^*}/\sqrt[p]{\pi a}$ decreases as the moduli ratio increases, but above the moduli ratio of 3 its value decreases then increases again as the crack size increases. Reliability of the numerical analysis in this study was acquired with comparison to an analytical solution for the peny-shaped interface crack in an infinite medium.
In this paper, two different techniques for mixed-mode type engineering fracture mechanics are investigated to estimate the stress intensity factors by using p-version finite element model. These two techniques are displacement extrapolation with COD and CSD method and J-integral with decomposition method. By decomposing the displacement field obtained from p-version of finite element analysis into symmetric and antisymmetric displacement fields with respect to the crack line, Mode-I and Mode-II stress intensity factors can be determined using aforementioned techniques. The example problems for validating the proposed techniques are centrally and centrally oblique cracked panels under tension. The numerical results associated with the variation of oblique angle and the ratio of crack length and panel width (a /W ratio) are compared with those by theoretical values and empirical solutions in literatures. Very good agreements with the existing solutions are shown.
The possibility of the development of gas driven hydrofractures at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant(WIPP) is investigated through analytical and numerical calculations and through laboratory experiments. First, an investigation of the chemical reactions involved shows that a large volume of gas could potentially be generated through the oxidation of iron in the waste. Simple ground water'flow calculations then show that unless regions of high permeability has been created, this gas volume will build up the pressure high enough to cause tensile damage in the horizontal planes of weakness or in the halite itself. The analytical calculations were performed using the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the numerical calculations were done using the finite element method. Also, laboratory tests were conducted to illustrate possible failure mechanisms. It is possible that after growing horizontal crack in the weaker anhydride layer, the crack could break out of this layer and propagate upward into the halite and toward the ground surface at an inclined argle of around 53$^{\circ}$ above horizontal. To prevent this latter phenomenon the anhydrite must have a fracture toughness less than 0.5590 times than that of the halite. Through the tests, three types of crack(radial vertical cracks, horizontal circular cracks and cone -shaped cracks) were observed.

According to recent research on leak-rate estimates to assess rupture probabilities of nuclear piping which contains a circumferential surface/through-wall cracks due to PWSCC, i.e., xLPR (Extremely Low Probability of Rupture) program, it has been revealed that the use of crack shape with an idealized circumferential through-wall crack during actual crack growth can lead to overestimate of the leak-rate. Thus, for accurate estimation of the leak-rate during crack growth, the more realistic crack shape that can simulate the crack shape transition from surface crack to through-wall crack should be used. In this context, in the present study, the elastic crack opening displacement of slanted circumferential through-wall crack in thick-walled cylinder was proposed based on 3-dimensional elastic finite element fracture mechanics analyses. To propose the elastic crack opening displacement of slanted circumferential through-wall crack in thick-walled cylinder, the geometric variables affecting crack opening displacement, i.e., thickness of cylinder, reference inner crack length and slant crack ratio were systematically varied. In terms of loading conditions, axial tension, global bending moment and internal pressure were considered. The present results can be applied to calculate the leak-rate considering more realistic crack shape transition from surface crack to idealized through-wall crack, and can be expected to enhance current leak-rate estimation scheme, for instance, in xLPR program etc.
