As an integral part of the probabilistic fracture mechanics analysis, stress intensity factor calculation scheme for semi-elliptical surface flaws in thin-walled cylinder has been introduced. The approximation solution utilizes the influence coefficients to calculate the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. This method has been compared with other solution methods including 3-D finite element analysis for cooldown boundary condition. The analysis results confirmed that the simplified methods provided sufficiently accurate stress intensity factor values for axial semi-elliptcal flaws on the surface of the reactor pressure vessel.
In the integral type reactor, SMART, all the major components such as steam generators, pressurizer and pumps are located inside the single reactor pressure vessel. The objective of this study is to evaluate the structural integrity for RPV of SMART under the postulated pressurized thermal shock by applying the finite element analysis. Input data for the finite element analysis were generated using the commercial code I-DEAS, and the fracture mechanics analysis was performed using the ABAQUS. The crack configurations, the crack aspect ratio and the clad thickness were considered in the parametric study. The effects of these parameters on the reference nil-ductility transition temperature were also investigated.
A developed hybrid method for crack identification of beams is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory and concepts of fracture mechanics, governing equation of the cracked beams is reformulated. Finite element (FE) method as a powerful numerical tool is used to discritize the equation in space domain. After transferring the equations from time domain to frequency domain, frequencies and mode shapes of the beam are obtained. Efficiency of the governed equation for free vibration analysis of the beams is shown by comparing the results with those available in literature and via ANSYS software. The used equation yields to move the influence of cracks from the stiffness matrix to the mass matrix. For crack identification measured data are produced by applying random error to the calculated frequencies and mode shapes. An objective function is prepared as root mean square error between measured and calculated data. To minimize the function, hybrid genetic algorithms (GAs) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is introduced. Efficiency, Robustness, applicability and usefulness of the mixed optimization numerical tool in conjunction with the finite element method for identification of cracks locations and depths are shown via solving different examples.
Results pertaining to 3D investigations on the effect of the thickness on the stress fields at the crack front are presented. A 3D finite element analysis is performed using a modified single edge-notched tension specimen configuration, with an inclined crack to include mixed mode I-II. A technique to mesh the crack front (3D) with singular finite elements in ANSYS without using third party software is introduced and used in this study. The effect of the specimen thickness is explicitly investigated for six thicknesses ranging from 1 to 32 mm. In addition, three crack inclination angles, including pure Mode-I, are used to study the effect of mixed-mode I-II fracture. An attempt is made to correlate the extent of a particular stress state along the crack front to thickness. In addition, ${\sigma}_{zz}/{\nu}({\sigma}_{xx}+{\sigma}_{yy})$ contours at the crack front are presented as a useful means to analyze the stress state.
The best available solution to predict the fatigue life of structural steels is the implementation of EPFM approach based on the principles and techniques of elasto plastic fracture mechanics. To predict the fatigue life, the conventional Paris law has been modified by substituting the range of J-value denoted by ΔJ for ΔK that is calculated by the proposed p-version model. The proposed P-version finite element model is formulated by the incremental theory of Plasticity that consists of the constitutive equation fur elastic-perfectly plastic materials, Tresca/von-Mises yield criteria, and associated flow rule. The experimental fatigue test is conducted with five UP(Center Clucked Panels) specimens to validate the accuracy of the p-version finite element model. Also, the results obtained by LTM approach have been compared with those by EPFM approach.
A series of fatigue tests have been performed on the non-load carrying fillet welded joints in order to quantitatively assess the fatigue characteristics due to the grindings and TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding treatments. From the results of fatigue tests, it has been shown that the fatigue strengths at $2{\times}106$ load cycles were improved in the case of the grinding sand TIG welding treatments, and we could know that it is satisfying fatigue strength prescribed in fatigue design standard in general. Besides, from the results of fracture mechanics approaches, the geometric shape correction factors were the most dominant factors in the initial fatigue crack growth, but as the fatigue crack develops, the finite plate correction factor were became the most dominant factor, and the fatigue life on non-load carrying fillet welded joints could be relatively exactly estimated by using the relations between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor obtained from finite element analysis and existing proposed formulae.
Different types of moment resisting connections are commonly used to transfer the induced seismic moments between frame elements in an earthquake resisting structure. The local connection behavior may drastically affect the global seismic response of the structure. In this study, the finite element and experimental seismic investigations are implemented on two frequently used connection type to evaluate the local behavior and to reveal the failure modes. An alternative connection type is then proposed to eliminate the unfavorable brittle fracture modes resulted from probable poor welding quality. This will develop a reliable predefined ductile plastic mechanism forming away from the critical locations. Employing this technique, the structural reliability of the moment resisting connections shall be improved by achieving a controllable energy dissipation source in form of yielding of the cover plates.

This paper presents the development of methodologies using Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) for cracked unstiffened and concentric stiffened panels subjected to constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading. XFEM formulations such as level set representation of crack, element stiffness matrix formulation and numerical integration are presented and implemented in MATLAB software. Stiffeners of the stiffened panels are modelled using truss elements such that nodes of the panel and nodes of the stiffener coincide. Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) is computed from the solutions of XFEM using domain form of interaction integral. Paris's crack growth law is used to compute the number of fatigue cycles up to failure. Numerical investigations are carried out to model the crack growth, estimate the remaining life and generate damage tolerant curves. From the studies, it is observed that (i) there is a considerable increase in fatigue life of stiffened panels compared to unstiffened panels and (ii) as the external applied stress is decreasing number of fatigue life cycles taken by the component is increasing.
Engineering structures usually suffer from cracks. The crack geometry has an influence on the structural mechanical properties and subsequent crack propagations. However, as an extensively utilized method in fracture analysis, the extended finite element method provided by Abaqus fails to output the specific location and dimensions of fractures. In this study, a technique to capture the crack geometry is proposed. The technique is based on the invariant level set method (I-LSM), which can avoid updating the level set function during crack development. The solution is achieved by an open-source plug-in programmed by Python. Three examples were performed to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the program. The result shows that the developed program can accurately output the crack geometry in both the 2D and 3D models. The open-source plug-in codes are included as supplementary material.
The drive pulley, which is employed for loading and unloading raw materials in a steel mill, is usually manufactured by use of various welding processes. In this study the weldment in the pulley, in which TIG and $CO_2$ welding processes are used, has been analyzed from view point of fracture mechanics. Fracture toughness tests have been performed according to ASTM E813. A servo-hydraulic testing machine (10kN) has been employed. Also the crack propagation tests (Mode I) have been performed with compact tension specimen in compliance with ASTM E647. To predict the critical crack size in the weldment, finite element stress analysis for the drive pulley under real operating conditions have been performed. In addition, the residual stresses at the weldment and in heat-affected zone have been obtained by hole drilling method. The planar critical crack size have been predicted for the drive pulley by considering the stress analysis results and the residual stresses due to welding process. For the drive pulley considered in this study, it has been concluded that the most important factor in determining the critical crack size is the welding residual stress in the transverse direction. Also the effect of stress concentration at the root of the weldment have been noticeable. For the planar crack, the fatigue crack growth life from an initial crack size of 2mm to the critical crack size obtained as in the above have been predicted. The predicted lives were between 55, 900 and 72, 000 cycles depending on the shape of the elliptical crack. The predicted lives were in fairly good agreement for the drive pulley considered in this study.
