  • An efficient boundary-based optimization technique is applied in the numerical computation of free surface flow problems, by reformulating them into the equivalent optimal shape design problems. While the sensitivity in the boundary method has mainly been calculated using the boundary element method (BEM) as an analysis means, the finite element method (FEM) is used in this study because of its popularity and easy-to-use features. The advantage of boundary method is that the design velocity vectors are needed only on the boundary, not over the whole domain. As such, a determination of the complicated domain design velocity field, which is necessary in the domain method, is eliminated, thereby making the process easy to implement and efficient. Seepage and supercavitating flow problem are chosen to illustrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The equivalent boundary conditions have been applied to the front door panel forming process, in order to demonstrate its reliability and validity. The elongation in the bead forming process is applied to the binder wrap process as the equivalent displacement boundary condition and the restraining force in the drawing process is applied to stamping process as the equivalent force boundary condition. The result calculated with the equivalent boundary conditions shows closer coincidence with the experimental result than simulation with different boundary conditions. The numerical result fully demonstrates that drawbead forming simulation for calculation of equivalent boundary conditions is necessary and effective.

  • In recent years, the finite element method has become one of the most popular numerical technique for obtaining solutions of engineering science problems. However, there exist various uncertainties in modeling the problems, such as the dimensions(geometry shape), the material properties, boundary conditions, etc. The consideration for the uncertainties inherent in the problems can be made by understanding the influences of uncertain parameters[1]. Determining the influences of uncertainties as statistical quantities using the standard finite element method requires enormous computing time, while the probabilistic finite element method is realized as an efficient scheme[2,3] yielding statistical solution with just a few direct computations. In this paper, a formulation of the probabilistic fluid-structure interaction problem accounting for the first order perturbation of geometric shape is derived, and especially probabilistical acoustic pressure scattering from the structure with surrounding fluid is focused on. In Section 2, governing equations for the fluid-structure problems are given. In Section 3, a finite element formulation, based on the functional, is presented. First order perturbation of geometric shape with randomness is incorporated into the finite element formulation in conjunction with discretization of the random fields in Section 4 and 5. Finally, the proposed formulation is applied to a acoustic pressure scattering problem from an infinitely long cylindrical shell structure with randomness of radial perturbation.

  • In this paper we present an application to airfoil design of an optimum design method based on optimal control theory. The method used here transforms the design problem by way of a change of variable into an optimal control problem for a distributed system with Neumann boundary control. This results in a set of variational inequalities which is solved by adding a penalty term to the differential equation. This si inturn solved by a finite element method.

  • This paper presents Galerkin- and Upwind-finite element analyses solution in the travelling magnetic filed problem. The travelling magnetic field problem is subject to convective- diffusion equation. Therefore, the solution derived from Galerkin-FEM with linear interpolation function may oscillate between the adjacent nodes. A simple model with Derichlet, Noumann and periodic boundary condition respectively, have been analyzed to investigate stabilities of solutions. It is concluded that the solution of Galerkin-FEM may oscillate according to boundary condition and element type, but that of Upwind-FEM is stable regardless boundary condition.

  • Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of the coaxial cylindrical shells with fluid-filled annulus. Theoretical method is developed to find the natural frequencies of the shell using the finite Fourier series expansion, and their results are compared with those of finite element method to verify the validation of the method developed. The effect of the fluid-filled annulus and the boundary conditions on the modal characteristics of the coaxial shells is investigated using a finite element modeling.

  • Numerical simulation of coextrusion process of viscoelastic fluids within a die has been carried out. In the coextrusion process velocity profile at the outflow boundary is not known a priori, which makes it difficult to impose the proper boundary condition at the outflow boundary. This difficulty has been avoided by using the open boundary condition (OBC) method. In this study, elastic viscous stress splitting (EVSS) formulation with streamline upwind (SU) method has been used in the finite element method. In order to test the validity of the OBC method, comparison between the results of fully developed condition at the outlet and those of OBC has been made for a Newtonian fluid. In the case of upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid, the effect of outflow boundary condition on the interface position has been investigated by using two meshes having different downstream lengths. In both cases, the results with the OBC method showed reasonable interface shape. In particular, for the UCM fluid the interface shape calculated with OBC was independent of the downstream length, while the results with the zero traction condition showed oscillation of interface position close to the outlet. Viscosity difference was found to be more important than elasticity difference in determining the final interface position. However, the overshoot of interface position near the con-fluent point increased with elasticity.

  • It is usual that underground structures are constructed within multi-layered medium. In this paper, an efficient numerical model ling of multi-layered structural systems is studied using coupled analysis of finite elements and boundary elements. The finite elements are applied to the area in which the material nonlinearity is dominated, and the boundary elements are applied to the far field area where the nonlinearity is relatively weak. In the boundary element model 1 ins of the multi-layered medium, fundamental solutions are restricted. Thus, methods which can utilize existing Kelvin and Melan solution are sought for the interior multi-layered domain problem and semi infinite domain problem. Interior domain problem which has piecewise homogeneous layers is analyzed using boundary elements with Kelvin solution; by discretizing each homogeneous subregion and applying compatibility and equilibrium conditions between interfaces. Semi-infinite domain problem is analyzed using boundary elements with Melan solution, by superposing unit stiffness matrices which are obtained for each layer by enemy method. Each methodology is verified by comparing its results which the results from the finite element analysis and it is concluded that coupled analysis using boundary elements and finite elements can be reasonable and efficient if the superposition technique is applied for the multi-layered semi-infinite domain problems.

  • In this paper. dynamic behavior of the cracked beam under a moving mass is presented using the finite element method (FEM). Model accuracy is improved with the following consideration: (1) FE model with Timoshenko beam element (2) Additional flexibility matrix due to crack presence (3) Interaction forces between the moving mass and supported beam. The Timoshenko bean model with a two-node finite element is constructed based on Guyan condensation that leads to the results of classical formulations. but in a simple and systematic manner. The cracked section is represented by local flexibility matrix connecting two unchanged beam segments and the crack as modeled a massless rotational spring. The inertia force due to the moving mass is also involved with gravity force equivalent to a moving load. The numerical tests for various mass levels. crack sizes. locations and boundary conditions were performed.
