The engine parts material used in gas turbines (GTs) should be resistant to high-temperature variations. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for gas turbine blades are found to have a significant effect on prolonging the life cycle of turbine blades by providing additional heat resistance. This work is to study the performance of TBCs on the high-temperature environment of the turbine blades. It is understood that this coating will increase the lifecycles of blade parts and decrease maintainence and repair costs. Experiments were performed on the gas turbine blade to see the effect of TBCs in different combinations of materials through the air plasma method. Three-layered coatings using materials INCONEL 718 as base coating, NiCoCrAIY as middle coating, and La2Ce2O7 as the top coating was applied. Finite element analysis was performed using a two-dimensional method to optimize the suitable formulation of coatings on the blade. Temperature distributions for different combinations of coatings layers with different materials and thickness were studied. Additionally, three-dimensional thermal stress analysis was performed on the blade with a commercial code. Results on the effect of TBCs shows a significant improvement in thermal resistance compared to the uncoated gas turbine blade.

For high efficiency and easy speed control of brushless DC (BLDC) motor, the demand of BLDC motor is increasing. Especially demand of interior permanent magnet (IPM) BLDC with high efficiency and high power in electric motion vehicle is increasing. However, IPM BLDC basically has a high cogging torque that results from the interaction of permanent magnet magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonics and air-gap permeance harmonics due to slotting. This cogging torque generates vibration and acoustic noises during the driving of motor. Thus reduction of the cogging torque has to be considered in IPM BLDC motor design by analytical methods. This paper proposes the cogging torque reduction method for IPM BLDC motor. For reduction of cogging torque of IPM BLDC motor, this paper describes new technique of the flux barriers design. The proposed method uses sinusoidal form of flux density to reduce the cogging torque. To make the sinusoidal air-gap flux density, flux barriers are applied in the rotor and flux barriers that installed in the rotor produce the sinusoidal form of flux density. Changing the number of flux barrier, the cogging torque is analyzed by finite element method. Also characteristics of designed model by the proposed method are analyzed by finite element method.

Recently hydrogen fuel cell buses have been deployed for the public transportations. In order to introduce buses fueled by hydrogen successfully, the research results of hydrogen bus safety should be discussed and investigated significantly. Especially, Korean government drives research in terms of various applications of hydrogen energy to replace the conventional fuel energy resources and to improve the safety evaluation. Thus it is necessary to examine vehicle crashworthiness under side impact loadings. This study was focused on the simulation result evaluation of full bus model and simplified bus model with hydrogen fuel tank module and mounting system located below floor structure due to the significance of bus side impact accidents. The finite element models of hydrogen bus, fuel tank system and side impact moving barrier were set up and simulation results reported model performance and result comparison of two side impact models. Computational results and research discussion showed the conceptual side impact framework to evaluate hydrogen bus crashworthiness.

In this paper, plasma modeling is achieved using fluid dynamics, thereby electron density is derived. The way proposes the key to overcoming the limitations of conventional researches which adopt simplified plasma model. The result is coupled with Maxwell-Boltzmann system in order to calculate scattering waves in various incident angle. The first part is dedicated to perform plasma modeling in dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) structure. Suzen-Huang model is adopted among various models due to the fact that it uses time independent variables to calculated potential and electron distribution in static system. The second part deals with finite difference time domain(FDTD) scheme which computes the scattered waves when the modulated Gaussian pulse is incident. Founded on it, radar cross section(RCS) is observed. Consequently, RCS is decreased by 1~2 dB with DBD plasma. The result is analogous to the RCS measurement in other researches.

In this paper, we present an analytical model for the first eigen energy level ($E_0$) of the carriers in the inversion layer in present generation MOSFETs, having ultrathin gate oxides and high substrate doping concentrations. Commonly used approaches to evaluate $E_0$ make either or both of the following two assumptions: one is that the barrier height at the oxide-semiconductor interface is infinite (with the consequence that the wave function at this interface is forced to zero), while the other is the triangular potential well approximation within the semiconductor (resulting in a constant electric field throughout the semiconductor, equal to the surface electric field). Obviously, both these assumptions are wrong, however, in order to correctly account for these two effects, one needs to solve Schrodinger and Poisson equations simultaneously, with the approach turning numerical and computationally intensive. In this work, we have derived a closed-form analytical expression for $E_0$, with due considerations for both the assumptions mentioned above. In order to account for the finite barrier height at the oxide-semiconductor interface, we have used the asymptotic approximations of the Airy function integrals to find the wave functions at the oxide and the semiconductor. Then, by applying the boundary condition at the oxide-semiconductor interface, we developed the model for $E_0$. With regard to the second assumption, we proposed the inclusion of a fitting parameter in the wellknown effective electric field model. The results matched very well with those obtained from Li's model. Another unique contribution of this work is to explicitly account for the finite oxide-semiconductor barrier height, which none of the reported works considered.

A computational study has been performed out to evaluate the effect of a vertical porous barrier on the pressure oscillations in a supersonic cavity. The porous barriers with different perforations were vertically installed into a rectangular cavity at Mach numbers 1.50, 1.83 and 2.50. TVD finite difference MUSCL scheme was employed to solve the two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present vertical porous barrier considerably altered the characteristics of the time-dependent shear layers that occur at the upstream edge of cavity and remarkably reduced the pressure oscillations inside the supersonic cavity. The present results showed that the effectiveness of passive control using the present porous vertical barrier is dependent on Mach number and the perforation of the porous barrier.
A nuclear energy facility is one of the most critical facilities to be safely protected during and after operation because the physical destruction of its barriers by an external attack could release radioactivity into the environment and can cause harmful effects. The barrier walls of nuclear energy facilities should be sufficiently robust to protect essential facilities from external attack or sabotage. Physical protection system (PPS) vulnerability assessment of a typical small nuclear research reactor was carried out by simulating an external attack with a tri-nitro toluene (TNT) shaped charge and results are presented. The reinforced concrete (RC) barrier wall of the research reactor located at a distance of 50 m from a TNT-shaped charge was the target of external attack. For the purpose of the impact assessment of the RC barrier wall, a finite element method (FEM) is utilized to simulate the destruction condition. The study results showed that a hole-size of diameter 342 mm at the front side and 364 mm at the back side was created on the RC barrier wall as a result of a 143.35 kg TNT-shaped charge. This aperture would be large enough to let at least one person can pass through at a time. For the purpose of the PPS vulnerability assessment, an Estimate of Adversary Sequence Interruption (EASI) model was used, which enabled the determination of most vulnerable path to the target with a probability of interruption equal to 0.43. The study showed that the RC barrier wall is vulnerable to a TNT-shaped charge impact, which could in turn reduce the effectiveness of the PPS.

During spray coating, especially in an air plasma spray (APS), pores, cracks, and splat boundaries are developed and those factors exert influence on thermomechanical properties such as elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion. Moreover, the thermo mechanical properties are crucial elements to determine the thermoelastic characteristics, for instance, temperature distribution, displacements, and stresses. Two types of thermal barrier coating (TBC) model, the dense and porous microstructures, are taken into account for the analysis of microstructural characterizations. $TriplexPro^{TM}$-200 system was applied to prepare TBC samples, and the METECO 204 C-NS powder is adopted for the relatively porous microstructure and METECO 204 NS powder for the dense microstructure in the top coat of TBCs. Governing partial differential equations were derived based on the thermoelastic theory and approximate estimates for the thermoelastic characteristics were obtained using a finite volume method for the governing equations.
Permeable reactive barriers used for groundwater treatment require proper estimation of the reactive material behavior regarding the emplacement method. This study evaluates the dry emplacement of zeolite (clinoptilolite) to be used as a reactive material in the barrier by carrying out several geotechnical laboratory tests. Dry zeolite samples, exhibited higher wetting-induced compression strains at the higher vertical stresses, up to 12% at 400 kN/m2. The swelling potential was observed to be limited with a 3.5 swell index and less than 1% free swelling strain. Direct shear tests revealed that inundation reduces the shear strength of a dry zeolite column by a maximum of 10%. Falling head permeability tests indicate decreasing permeability values with increasing the vertical effective stress. Regarding self-loading and inundation, the porosity along the zeolite column was calculated using a proposed 1D numerical model to predict the permeability with depth considering the laboratory tests. The calculated discharge efficiency was significantly decreased with depth and less than 2% relative to the top for barrier depths deeper than 20 m. Finally, the importance of directional dependence in the permeability of the zeolite medium for calibrating 2D finite element flow analysis was highlighted by bench-scale tests performed under 2D flow conditions.

This paper develops a finite element model for studying occupant behavior of a mid-size truck equipped with a driver side airbag. The developed model simulates an occupant behavior using PAM-CRASH/PAM-SAFE in super computer SP2. The model is developed based on a sled test. A 50% hybrid dummy III is used for measuring head and chest accelerations and femur loads, and major injury coefficients such as HIC, CA and femur load. Inferior components such as foot rest, seat, kneebolster, crash pad, etc. are roughly modeled and defined by a rigid material model. And contact type II is used for detecting a contact with dummy. Contact type II definition uses force-deflection relationship of each body Such components as steering column which directly affect on the occupant injuy are modeled in detail and defined by an elastic-plastic material model. Airbag cushion is modeled using rivet elements. Airbag cover groove is modeled using rivet elements. Airbag tether is modeled as nonlinear bar elements. Airbag model has two vent holes to ventilating the exploded gas. Airbag is folded close to the real airbag folding procedure, and folded cautiously in order not to have initial penetration. A vehicle pulse acquired from 31mph frontal barrier test is used as input signal for the simulation. The simulation conditions are tuned to the sled test ones. The measured dummy accelerations and major injury coefficients, and filmed dummy behavior and airbag inflation process using high speed camera are compared to the simulation results to verify the developed finite element model.
