Hydroxyapatites (HAps) were synthesized using the powdered waste of fishery products, i.e., fish scales and crab shells, as starting materials. HAp was synthesized by a wet-chemistry method followed by calcination at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. Calcined crabshell powder revealed a single HAp phase and fine powder, while calcined fish-scale powder showed a ${\beta}-TCP$ secondary phase, even at the higher calcination temperature. Dense HAp pellets were obtained from the crab-shell powder by spark plasma sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa in a vacuum state, giving sample densities of 2.93 and $3.06g/cm^3$, respectively. The estimated grain size of HAp was $448{\pm}96$ and $283{\pm}59nm$ for applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa, respectively. In contrast, the HAp obtained using the pressureless sintering technique showed excessive grain growth without further densification.
Four dogs with similar respiratory signs were referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. The clinical signs observed in these cases were anorexia, nasal discharge, sneezing, epistaxis, ocular discharge, and exophthalmoses. The routine laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis in two cases. On the skull radiographs, soft tissue density filled nasal cavity with loss of turbinate detail and increased density in frontal sinuses were found in all cases. Lysis of nasal bone was seen in two cases. Lysis of zygomatic arch was seen in one case. On computed tomography scan images, asymmetrical destruction of turbinate and nasal septum, and the superimposition of a soft tissue mass over the turbinate with peripheral contrast enhanced effect were identified in all cases. Destruction of ipsilateral orbital bone and invasion to retrobulbar region were visualized in all cases. In addition, all cases had lysis of cribriform plate. Lysis of nasal bone and destruction of hard palate were seen in two cases. Swelling of submandibular lymph node and salivary gland was seen in a case. Invasion to brain was identified in a case. All cases were diagnosed as nasal adenocarcinoma by cytology with fine needle aspiration and curettage.

Quantitative analysis is an important requirement in exploration, mining and processing of minerals. There is an increasing need for the use of quantitative mineralogical data to assist with bore hole logging, deposit delineation, grade control, feed to processing plants and monitoring of solid process residues. Quantitative analysis using X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) requires fine grinding and the addition of a reference material, or the application of Rietveld analysis to XRD patterns to provide accurate analysis of the suite of minerals present. Whilst accurate quantitative data can be obtained in this manner, the method is time consuming and limited to the laboratory. Mid infrared when combined with multivariant analysis has also been used for quantitative analysis. However, factors such as the absorption coefficients and refractive index of the minerals requires special sample preparation and dilution in a dispersive medium, such as KBr to minimize distortion of spectral features. In contrast, the lower intensity of the overtones and combinations of the fundamental vibrations in the near infrared allow direct measurement of virtually any solid without special sample preparation or dilution. Thus Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) has found application for quantitative on-line/in line analysis and control in a range of processing applications which include, moisture control in clay and textile processing, fermentation processes, wheat analysis, gasoline analysis and chemicals and polymers. It is developing rapidly in the mineral exploration industry and has been underpinned by the development of portable NIR spectrometers and spectral libraries of a wide range of minerals. For example, iron ores have been identified and characterized in terms of the individual mineral components using field spectrometers. Data acquisition time of NIR field instruments is of the order of seconds and sample preparation is minimal. Consequently these types of spectrometers have great potential for in-line or on-line application in the minerals industry. To demonstrate the applicability of NIR field spectroscopy for quantitative analysis of minerals, a specific example on the quantification of lateritic bauxites will be presented. It has been shown that the application of Partial Least Squares regression analysis (PLS) to the NIR spectra can be used to quantify chemistry and mineralogy in a range of lateritic bauxites. Important, issues such as sampling, precision, repeatability, and replication which influence the results will be discussed.

In order to establish a fully automatized pest control in the a greenhouse , the authors developed a prototype of microcomputer installed spraying vehicle which traveled along the furrows. Since a power sprayer mounted on the vehicle was driven by gasoline engine, plants grown in the greenhouse might be injured by the gas exhausted from the engine. Thus , effects of exhausted gas on photosynthetic rate and the shedding of flowers and buds of plants were examined. At first, effects of exhausted gas on photosynthetic rate of potted sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and eggplant(Solanum melongena L.) plants were examined. In a closed vinyl house the engine was operated for 5 minutes and plants were exposed to the gas for 2hours in the daytime on a fine day. Photosynthetic rate did not significantly decreased by the treatment in both species. Secondly, effects of ehtylene on the shedding of flowers and buds of sesame (Sesamum indicum L. ) were examined. In the closed and partiall opened vinyl house, the engine was operated for 5 minutes and potted sesame plants were exposed to the gas for 12 hours in the night. In partially opened vinyl house, ethylene concentration decreased to 0 ppm 3 hours after the engine was stopped and flower and bud did not shed. In contrast, when vinyl house was closed ethylene concentration was 0.75 pm even 12 hours after the engine was stopped and flowers and buds shed markedly and epinasty was observed in upper young leaves. As mentioned above , it was revealed that injury of plants in the greenhouse caused by the gas exhausted from a gasoline engine could be prevented by providing suitable ventilation.
Densification of SiC powder with additives of total amount of2, 4, 8 $wt\%$ Al-B-C was carried out by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The unique features of the process are the possibilities of a very fast heating rate and a short holding time to obtain fully dense materials. The heating rate and applied pressure were kept at $100^{\circ}C/min$ and 40 MPa, while the sintering temperature and holding time varied from 1700 - $1800^{\circ}C$ for 10 - 40 min, respectively. The SPS-sintered specimens with different amount of Al-B-C at $1800^{\circ}C$ reached near-theoretical density. The $3C{\rightarrow}6H,\;15R{\rightarrow}4H$ phase transformation of SiC was enhanced by increasing the additive amount. The microstructure of SiC sintered up to $1750^{\circ}C$ consisted of fine equiaxed grains. In contrast, the growth of large elongated grains in small matrix grains was shown in sintered bodies at $1800^{\circ}C$, and the plate-like grains interlocking microstructure had been developed by increasing the holding time at $1800^{\circ}C$. The grain growth rate decreases with increasing amount of Al-B-C in SiC starting powder, however, the both of volume fraction and aspect ratio of large grains in sintered body increased.
Starch dissolved in paper-mill wastes, either as a result of poor retention on the paper web or recycling of surface-treated broke, was a major pollutant Laboratory tests were performed by using different kinds of starch as a surface treatment. It was concluded that the use of cationic starch can positively affect the level of starch dissolved in liquid effluents. When cationically modified starches were used for surface sizing, the starch was tightly bound to the paper fibers, it was not removed during the repulping of broke. The result of mill trial in fine paper manufacture for the application of low-viscosity cationic starches used in size press reduced COD load in the effluents and increased One Pass Retention. It had been found that when cationic starch used as a surface sizing agent, more starch was retained on or near the surface of the sheet than with conventional oxidized starches. Thus surface strengths and quality were improved. In addition it is possible to maintain the desired level of starch penetration into the fiber net and improve porosity, opacity and brightness. In contrast, in most cases, dusting problems are notably eliminated. Cationic surface sized starch improved black and color ink-jet print quality in terms of feathering and optical density of the print image. These improved properties were believed to be due to a combination of fiber bonding and surface orientation more uniform starch concentration on the paper surface was resulted. Moreover cationic charges in the paper surface lend themselves excellently to fix ink jet ink anionic in nature.

To understand the effect of aerosols on the growth and physiological conditions of trees in forests, it is important to know the state of aerosols that are deposited on the surface of the leaves or needles. In this study, we developed methods of visualization of submicron-sized aerosols that were artificially deposited from the gas-phase or liquid phase onto tree leaves or needles in trees. Firstly, we used field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) to observe black carbon (BC) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves or needles. The distribution of BC particles deposited on the leaves and needles were distinguished based on the size and morphological features of the particles. The distribution and agglomerates size of BC particles differed between two spraying methods of BC particles employed. Secondly, we tried to visualize gold (Au) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) coupled to FE-SEM. We detected the Au particles based on the characteristic X-ray spectrum, which was secondarily generated from the Au particles. In contrast to the case of BC particles, the Au particles did not form agglomerates and were uniformly distributed on the leaf surfaces. The present results show that our methods provide useful information of adsorption and/or behavior of fine particles at the submicron level on the surface of the leaves.
Porous W-10 wt% Ti alloys are prepared by freeze-drying a $WO_3-TiH_2$/camphene slurry, using a sintering process. X-ray diffraction analysis of the heat-treated powder in an argon atmosphere shows the $WO_3$ peak of the starting powder and reaction-phase peaks such as $WO_{2.9}$, $WO_2$, and $TiO_2$ peaks. In contrast, a powder mixture heated in a hydrogen atmosphere is composed of the W and TiW phases. The formation of reaction phases that are dependent on the atmosphere is explained by a thermodynamic consideration of the reduction behavior of $WO_3$ and the dehydrogenation reaction of $TiH_2$. To fabricate a porous W-Ti alloy, the camphene slurry is frozen at $-30^{\circ}C$, and pores are generated in the frozen specimens by the sublimation of camphene while drying in air. The green body is hydrogen-reduced and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The sintered sample prepared by freeze-drying the camphene slurry shows large and aligned parallel pores in the camphene growth direction, and small pores in the internal walls of the large pores. The strut between large pores consists of very fine particles with partial necking between them.

In the DVB-T2 system with a multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission mode, Alamouti coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals are transmitted simultaneously from two spatially separated transmitters in a single frequency network (SFN). In such systems, each transmit-receive link may have a distinct carrier frequency offset (CFO) due to the Doppler shift and/or frequency mismatch between the local oscillators. Thus, the received signal experiences dual CFOs. This not only causes dual phase errors in desired data but also introduces inter-carrier interference (ICI), which cannot be removed completely by simply performing a CFO compensation. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes an iterative detection with dual phase errors compensation technique. In addition, we propose a successive-iterative ICI cancellation technique. This technique successively eliminates ICI in the initial iteration by exploiting pre-detected data pairs. Then, in subsequent iterations, it performs a fine interference cancellation using a priori information, iteratively fed back from the channel decoder. In contrast to previous works, the proposed techniques do not require estimates of dual CFOs. Their performances are evaluated via a full DVB-T2 simulator. Simulation results show that the DVB-T2 receiver equipped with the proposed dual phase errors compensation and the successive-iterative ICI cancellation techniques achieves almost the same performance as ideal dual CFOs-free systems, even for large dual CFOs.
