Silicon nitride is one of the most successful engineering ceramics, owing to a favorable combination of properties, including high strength, high hardness, low thermal expansion coefficient, and high fracture toughness. However, the impact damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics has not been widely characterized. In this study, sphere and explosive indentations were used to characterize the static and dynamic damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics with different microstructures. Three grades of $Si_3N_4$ with different grain size and shape, fine-equiaxed, medium, and coarse-elongated, were prepared. In order to observe the subsurface damaged zone, a bonded-interface technique was adopted. Subsurface damage evolution of the specimens was then characterized extensively using optical and electron microscopy. It was found that the damage response depends strongly on the microstructure of the ceramics, particularly on the glassy grain boundary phase. In the case of static indentation, examination of subsurface damage revealed competition between brittle and ductile damage modes. In contrast to static indentation results, dynamic indentation induces a massive subsurface yield zone that contains severe micro-failures. In this study, it is suggested that the weak glassy grain boundary phase plays an important role in the resistance to dynamic fracture.

In a turbulent premixed flame stabilized by the streamline step, and dominated by a coherent eddy, a flame micro-structure was investigated with analyzing the signals of temperature, the ion current, and schieren phtographs simultaneously. Generally the contours of large scale coherent eddies of schlieren photographs was considered as the flame front, however, the main reaction can be occurred within the eddy as a structure of fine flamelets scale. The surrounding burned gas of flamelets could not propagate to a unburned mixture, obstructing flamelets from propagating to a unburned mixture. Consequently, it could restrain flashback. The main reaction region was found to be located at higher temperature of the burned gas rather than at maximum rms of fluctuating temperature. The peak probability of higher temperature was 6 times greater than that of lower temperature. As it was difficult to infer a flame structure from PDF distribution of the fluctuating temperature in form of bimodal shape, it should be taken into consideration with other informations related to the sensitive flame front, for instance, ion current.
As of 2019, Korea's fine dust is the most severe among 38 OECD countries, and in the same year, 「the Framework on Disaster and Safety Management」 was revised to define fine dust as a social disaster. Currently, the government is working to achieve its emission reduction goals by preparing a comprehensive fine dust management plan (2022-2023) consisting of a total of five areas, 42 tasks, and 177 detailed tasks. However, it is necessary to come up with measures in consideration of the various spatial characteristics of the city, not just as a source of emission. Therefore, in this study, the shape of the city was classified using the LCZ (Local Climate Zone) classification system into 17 types by building type and land cover type in Busan, and the average annual PM10 and PM2.5 concentration were mapped using the IDW technique. In addition, Fragstats and Moving Window were used to quantify the LCZ classification system. Finally, correlation analysis and regression analysis were conducted to analyze the relationship between the LCZ classification system and PM10 and PM2.5. As a result, it was confirmed that the type of low height of the building and the type of green space with trees had a positive effect on the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5. Therefore, this study is expected to be used as basic data to establish fine dust reduction policies based on efficient spatial planning.
A series of numerical simulations were carried out using STOMP( Subsurface Transport over Multiple Phase) simulator. The flow and distribution of LNAPL were analyzed in homogeneous fine and coarse sand. Vertical movement of LNAPL is faster in the coarser sand. But the total volume of LNAPL retained in the unsaturated zone is larger in the finer sand. A fine layer in the coarse sand domain is also simulated. The results showed that the retained LNAPL volume and shape are highly influenced by the Position of the fine layer. Flow and distributions of LNAPL were simulated when there were heterogeneous lenses in the sand domain. Water table fluctuation was also considered. In these cases, it was found that the heterogeneous lens was a barrier to LNAPL flow, and water table fluctuation stimulated the downward movement of retained LNAPL. The LNAPL flow and distribution observed in these numerical experiments show that in the subsurface environment, the behaviors of LNAPL highly depend on heterogeneities of unsaturated zone and the dynamic hydrogeologic condition such as water table fluctuation. These results can explain some of the complexity of LNAPL flow and distribution Patterns in LNAPL contaminated field sites.

The eastward extension of the suture zone between the Sino-Korea and Yangtze cratons in the Korean Peninsula and Japanese islands remains debatable (Hiroi, 1981; Cluzel et al., 1991; Yin and Nie, 1993; Sohma and Kunugiza, 1993; Isozaki, 1997; Arakawa et at., 2000), and is related to our understanding of the continent-continent collision orogeny. The collision orogeny varies in tectono-metamorphic processes and the timing differs from place to place, as exemplified by the absence of coesite and micro-diamond in the Korean Peninsula and Japanese islands, because it is a long-lived process of more than several tens of million years from subduction to exhumation in the Wilson cycle, and because the suture zone extends more than several thousand kilometers with a curved shape from the Qinling area of China to the Hida highland area of Japan. Hiroi (1981) is the first paper to correlate the Unazuki metamorphic rocks of the Hida metamorphic belt in Japan with the Ogcheon belt in the Korean Peninsula based on the presence of 240 Ma medium P/T metamorphic rocks in both belts, but there is a lack of recent studies on this correlation. To resolve the correlationship, there are two approaches: 1) petrological studies characterizing the origin and P-T history of rocks and 2) in-situ micro-dating of fine-grained, zoned minerals of zircon, monazite, uraninite and thorite using the EPMA (U-Th-Pb chemical dating or CHIME depending on calibration method) and the SHRIMP (Sensitive High-resolution ion Microprobe) to decipher the timing of geological events. As a first step of these approaches, micro-dating was undertaken to rocks of the Hida metamorphic belt and its Mesozoic cover (Tetori Group) in the Hida highland area, central Japan.

Constraints on the structure and composition of the active layer are important for understanding permafrost evolution. Soil convection owing to repeated moisture-induced freeze-thaw cycles within the active layer promotes the formation of self-organized patterned ground. Here we present the results of ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys across a selected sorted circle near King Sejong Station, Antarctica, to better delineate the active layer and its relation to the observed patterned ground structure. We acquire GPR data in both bistatic mode (common mid-points) for precise velocity constraints and monostatic mode (common-offset) for subsurface imaging. Reflections are derived from the active layer-permafrost boundary, organic layer-weathered soil boundary within the active layer, and frozen rock-fracture-filled ice boundary within the permafrost. The base of the imaged sorted circle possesses a convex-down shape in the central silty zone, which is typical for the pattern associated with convection-like soil motion within the active layer. The boundary between the central fine-silty domain and coarse-grained stone border is effectively identified in a radar amplitude contour at the assumed active layer depth, and is further examined in the frequency spectra of the near- and far-offset traces. The far-offset traces and the traces from the lower frequency components dominant on the far-offset traces would be associated with rapid absorption of higher frequency radiowave due to the voids in gravel-rich zone. The presented correlation strategies for analyzing very shallow, thin-layered GPR reflection data can potentially be applied to the various types of patterned ground, particularly for acquiring time-lapse imaging, when electric resistivity tomography is incorporated into the analysis.

Fly ash produced in coal combustion is a fine-grained material consisting mostly of spherical, glassy, and porous particles. A study on the formation mechanism of the fly ash from coal particles in the pulverized coal power plant is investigated with a physical, morphological, and chemical characteristic analysis of fly ash collected from the Samchonpo power plant. This study may contribute to the data base of domestic fly ash, the improvement of combustion efficiency, fouling phenomena and ash collection in the electrostatic precipitator. The physical property of fly ash is determined using a particle counter for the measurement of ash size distribution. Morphological characteristic of fly ash is performed using a scanning electron micrograph. The chemical components of fly ash are determined using an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry(ICP). The distribution of fly ash size was bi-modal and ranged from 12 to $19{\mu}m$ in mass median diameter. Exposure conditions of flue gas temperature and duration within the combustion zone of the boiler played an important role on the morphological properties of the fly ash such as shape, particle size and chemical components. The evolution of ash formation during pulverized coal combustion has revealed three major mechanisms by large particle formation due to break-up process, gas to particle conversion and growth by coagulation and agglomeration.
In order to develop a new commercial Al-12%Si casting alloy with improved physical properties, we investigated the effect of adding Sr and TiB to the alloy. Al-12%Si alloys were prepared by die casting at $660^{\circ}C$. The eutectic temperature of the Sr-modified Al-12%Si alloy decreased to $9^{\circ}C$ and the mushy zone region increased. The shape of the Si phase changed from coarse acicula to fine fiber with the addition of Sr. The addition of TiB in the Al-12%Si alloy reduced the size of the primary ${\alpha}$-Al and eutectic Si phases. When Sr and TiB were added together, it worked more effectively in refinement and modification. The density of twins in the Si phase-doped Sr increased and the width of the twins was refined to 5 nm. These results are related to the impurity induced twinning(IIT) growth.
It is difficult to classify tidal flat surface that is composed of a mixture of mud, sand, water and microphytobenthos. We used a Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method for effectively classifying the tidal flat surface characteristics within a pixel. This study aims at 1) detecting algal mat using LSU in the Saemangeum tidal flats, 2) determining a suitable end-member selection method in tidal flats, and 3) find out a habitual characteristics of algal mat. Two types of end-member were built; one is a reference end-member derived from field spectrometer measurements and the other image end-member. A field spectrometer was used to measure spectral reflectance, and a spectral library was accomplished by shape difference of spectra, r.m.s. difference of spectra, continuum removal and Mann-Whitney U-test. Reference end-members were extracted from the spectral library. Image end-members were obtained by applying Principle Component Analysis (PCA) to an image. The LSU method was effective to detect microphytobenthos, and successfully classified the intertidal zone into algal mat, sediment, and water body components. The reference end-member was slightly more effective than the image end-member for the classification. Fine grained upper tidal flat is generally considered as a rich habitat for algal mat. We also identified unusual microphytobenthos that inhabited coarse grained lower tidal flats.

To investigate pressure distributions on the shaft surface of the air bearing, the commercial CFD software was employed to study three different nozzle geometries to improve the nozzle performance: general drill-shaped, matched cube-shaped and trimmed exit nozzles. Under the influence of stagnation point, the maximum pressure was observed at the center of shaft surface for all cases. Owing to the blocking effect of a fine gap between the shaft surface and the nozzle exit, the drill-shaped nozzle has the rapid local pressure increase near the nozzle exit corner, generating the ring vortex in the radial direction within pressure ratio of 6.92, and its pressure becomes negative in a certain range of downstream. In comparison, the contoured nozzle showed a local pressure increase in the measured range of pressure ratios, but a negative pressure appeared within the pressure ratio of about 10. The trimmed nozzle was seemed to extend the high pressure zone near the stagnation point in the radial direction substantially, and no negative pressure was appeared in the whole range. Based on these observations, it is found that trimming nozzle exit becomes more effective for improving the performance than modifying the nozzle inside contour.
