A 33-year-old woman who was diagnosed as medullary carcinoma by fine needle aspiration of thyroid mass is presented. The smear revealed dispersed pattern and small clusters of cells without follicular or papillary structures. The nuclei were round, oval or spindle shaped and eccentrically located. The cytoplasm was abundant and showed red-stained cytoplasmic granulation and tail-like projection with indistinct border. Clumps of amorphous, light-green material were intermingled with tumor cells.
Collecting duct carcinoma of the kidney is an unusual variety of renal carcinoma considered to arise from the epithelium of the collecting ducts. We recently experienced a case of fine needle aspiration cytology of collecting duct carcinoma of the kidney in a 17 year-old girl. The smear revealed many cellular clusters of ordinary papillary pattern, characterized by clumping of cells with nuclear overlapping, in a slightly necrotic background. The tumor cells had abundant delicate granular cytoplasm with some having vacuolation. The nuclei were only slightly pleomorphic with somewhat coarse chromatin and one or more small nucleoli Some nuclei showed irregular nuclear membrane and nuclear groove. A few polymorphs were also present.

We demonstrate that wide-angle X-ray scattering pattern from photoactive yellow protein (PYP) in solution using a high flux third generation synchrotron X-ray source reflects not only the overall structure, but also fine structures of the protein. X-ray scattering data from PYP in solution have been collected in q ranges from 0.02 ${\AA}^{-1}$ to 2.8 ${\AA}^{-1}$. These data are sensitive to the protein structure and consistent with the calculation based on known crystallographic atomic coordinates. Theoretical scattering patterns were also calculated for the intermediates during the photocycle of PYP to estimate the feasibility of time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments on such proteins. These results demonstrate the possibility of using the wide-angle solution X-ray scattering as a quantitative monitor of photo-induced structural changes in PYP.
A case of malignant epithelial mesothelioma of the peritoneum diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology is described. The smear showed many Individually scattered or clustered large round malignant epithelial cells intermingled with relatively small nonneoplastic mesothelial and mesenchymal cells. Papillary configurations with thick fibrous core were also seen. The malignant cells were virtually reminiscent of reactive mesothelial cells but they were larger in size and had more prominent nucleoli and more frequent binucleated or multinucleated cell formations than reactive mesothelial cells. The characteristic features of malignant cell of mesothelioma compared with the metastatic adenocarcinoma were relatively uniform cellular size, prominent round nucleoli, large round vesicular nuclei with finely granular chromatin pattern, smooth nuclear membrane, abundant glassy cytoplasm rather than bubbly mucin-containing cytoplasm and fuzzy cell border.
The major categories of neuroendocrine tumors of lung are typical carcinoid, atypical carcinoid, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, and small cell carcinoma. The histologic classification criteria of neuroendocrine tumors are well documented in the "WHO Classification of Tumors" based on mitotic figures and necrosis. Cytologic characteristics of neuroendocrine tumors are trabecular, acinar, and solid arrangement of tumor cells and occasional rosette formation. Nuclear chromatin patterns are characteristically described as "salt and pepper chromatin pattern". Many of cytologic classifications documented in the literature are before the "WHO Classification". In this review, the cytologic features of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors are documented according to the WHO classification, and recent concepts of neuroendocrine tumors of lung are discussed.
Viscoelastic fluid is used in various industrial sites because its cost reduction and environmental benefits by preventing formation of fine droplets that scattered around. However, viscoelastic fluids, unlike newtonian fluids, contain a shear thinning characteristic that decrease in viscosity as shear rate increases and elastic characteristic, making it difficult to predict spray breakup process. In this study we made three test fluids. Boger fluid with viscoelastic characteristics, and two newtonian fluids, were prepared to exclude shear thinning characteristics and study the effects of elastic characteristic only. Flow visualization, spray angle, and SMD were measured for three test fluids using laboratory scale impinging jet test apparatus. As a result, it was confirmed that Boger fluid, unlike the newtonian fluid, was not formed fine droplets that scattered around and the breakup process appeared differently. In addition, SMD was found to be large in Boger fluid, and the SMD according to pressure was confirmed that there is no significant difference.
Electromagnetic forming(EMF) is one of the high-speed forming methods, and has been used to deform metal sheets. The advantages of electromagnetic forming are reduced wrinkling due to non-contact characteristic and fine formability because of the high speed impact. In the current study, we suggest the application of electromagnetic forming to emboss pattern shapes using electromagnetic forces with only one forming coil and one punch. The high impact of the sheet at speeds of 100~300m/s produces significant coining pressure. In the current paper, electromagnetic forming was applied to Al 1100-O sheets; with thickness of 1.27mm and an area of $40mm{\times}40mm$. Using a single spiral coil, totally different types of patterns were created. Four different patterns were successfully produced on the aluminum sheet. The length and depth of the patterns were measured by three-dimensional scanning. Comparisons to the die shape showed good agreement. The test results confirm that emboss pattern forming by EMF using a single die can be used to replace the costly conventional method.

Patterned optical components are widely used for optical products such as LCD and lighting. Since CCFL was used as a light source in the products, prism films having linear continuous optical patterns were widely used. However, LED which is a dot light source is popular recently, therefore, the optical products need new optical components having non-continuous optical patterns. Indentation machining method is a powerful method for machining of non-continuous pattern. When a copper mold and a brass mold were machined by this method, severe plastic deformation called pile-up was observed around the patterns. Since pile-up has negative relationship to ductility, this deformation can be eliminated by annealing treatment which makes the materials ductile. No plastic deformation occurred when machined after annealing at $600{^{\circ}C}$ and $575{^{\circ}C}$ for copper and brass, respectively. Finally, non-continuous optical patterns with high quality were machined on a copper mold and a brass mold successively.

The laser patterning of sputter-deposited CoNdZr/Cu/CoNbZr multi-layered films had been tried using Nd:YAG laser. However generally it is very difficult to remove metal films because of their high reflectance of the laser on the surfaces. As a counterproposal for this problem authors for the first time tried to deposit energy-absorbing layers on the metal films and then irradiated the laser on the surfaces of energy-absorbing layers. Here the energy-absorbing layers consisted of laser energy-absorbing fine powders and binding polymers. Three kinds of powders for the energy-absorbing layers had been used to see the difference in the pattern formation with the degree of laser energy absorption. They were electrically conductive silver powders insulating BaTiO$_3$powder and semiconducting carbon powder. Remarkable difference in width of the formed pattern and the roughness of pattern edge were observed with the characteristic of the powder for the energy-absorbing layer. The pattern width using carbon paste was about three times larger than that using BaTiO$_3$paste. It was observed that the energy-absorbing layer with carbon was the most effective on this micro-patterning.
Thumb adduction is an abnormal pattern typically noted in children with spastic cerebral palsy. This abnormal pattern can limit hand function, specifically in the type and quality of prehension pattern used and in the coordination of release. This ABAB single-subject research was designed to examine the effects of short thumb opponens splint on hand function in cerebral palsy. The subject was a 4 years and 8 months old boy with right upper extremity spasticity. The child was fitted with a short thumb opponens splint, which was worn for 8 hours per day during the daytime. Two different measures were used: (a) prehension component scores; (b) Bruininks-Oseretsky test of motor proficiency. Data was collected three times a week for 10 weeks. Visual analysis of data indicate that after the application of a short thumb opponens splint, improvements were noted in the prehension pattern and fine motor functional task. The results of this study suggest that short thumb opponens splint may prove efficaciousness in the treatment of the child with cerebral palsy.
