  • TEN-STORIED STONE PAGODA ON THE SITE OFWON-GAKSA(Temple) which is one of three marble pagodas in South Korea, were dated from the thirteenth year of the reign of King Sejo(1467). On the roof and surface of each the stories, there were large amount of the contaminants such as pigeon′s excretions, dust and environmental elements for a long time. The pH of contaminants is not acid, but is 7.2, neutral. To find the species of organic acidscontained in the contaminants and the degree of damaging for a marble pagoda, we analyzed the contaminants using GC-MSD method by the following procedures. Organic acids were extracted by saponifying whole contaminants. After Saponification, the organic acids were mathylated to increase their volatility upon subsequent GC-MSD analysis. The mathyl esters of the organic acids are extracted from the acidified aqueous solution. And the organic extracts were washed with adilute base solution. The washed extract were analyzed by GC(Hewlett Packard 5890)with a nonpolar capillary column(Crosslinked 5% Ph Me Silicone, 50×0.2×0.33\mumfilm thickness, USA) and Mass Spectrometric Detector(Hewlett Packard 5970B).As the result, it was found that 12 organic acids were the main compound in pagoda′contaminants, and the amount of organic acid were negligible.

  • This study addresses the contamination sensitivity test of a typical fuel pump for automotive vehicle. The objective of the study is to find the contamination sensitivity coefficient of fuel pump on specific contaminant particle sizes so that optimal fuel filter could be selected. To achieve the objective, the degradation of discharge flow rate of fuel pump was measured under the experiments of various contaminants size ranges of ISO test dust up to 80{\mu}{\textrm}{m}. The fundamental theory of contamination sensitivity was introduced and the contamination sensitivity coefficients were estimated using the experimental data. Maximum contamination sensitivity coefficient of 5×106 L/minㆍEa was found on the contaminant size range of 40{\mu}{\textrm}{m}∼50{\mu}{\textrm}{m}. The magnified picture of the surface of vane disc revealed that the abrasive wear was the principal cause of discharge flow rate degradation. Hence, this study revealed that high efficiency filter on the contaminant particle size range of 30{\mu}{\textrm}{m}∼70{\mu}{\textrm}{m} especially should be used to maintain the service lift of the fuel filter.

  • The corrosion product of archaeological iron objects is supposed to be removed because it causes re-corrosion. So far it is removed by scapel and sand blaster but they depend on the skill and experience of a conservator and the glass-dust of the sand blaster is harmful to humans. Therefore this study applies a laser cleaning system which is used in various industrial cleaning processes, to remove corrosion product from archaeological iron objects. In addition, this work studies the alternation of corrosion product after laser irradiation, which evaluates the reliability of the laser cleaning system. Optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, XRD, Raman have been used to observe and analyse the surface of the objects. The results show the capacity of laser cleaning some corrosion product, but blackening appears with increasing pulses and laser energy, and some corrosion products, goethite and hematite, are partially altered to magnetite. These problems, blackening and alternation of corrosion product, should be solved by further studies which find the optimal laser irradiation condition and use a wetting agent.

  • Recently, as the fine dust is increased and the emission regulations of diesel engines are strengthened, interest in diesel soot filtration devices is rapidly increased. In particular, there is a demand for technology development for higher efficiency of diesel exhaust gas after-treatment devices. As part of this, many studies conducted to increase the exhaust gas treatment efficiency by improving the flow uniformity of the exhaust gas in the DPF and reducing the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet of disel particle filter (DPF). In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed when exhaust gas flows into the canning reduction device equipped with a 13" asymmetric DPF in order to maintain the flow uniformity in the diesel exhaust system and reduce the pressure. In particular, a study was conducted to find the geometry with the smallest pressure drop and the highest flow uniformity by simulating the DPF I/O ratio, exhaust gas temperature, inlet-outlet pressure and flow uniformity according to the geometry and hole size of distributor.

  • We investigate infrared properties of OGLE4 Mira variables in our Galaxy. For each object, we cross-identify the AllWISE, 2MASS, Gaia, and IRAS counterparts. We present various IR two-color diagrams (2CDs) and period-magnitude and period-color relations for the Mira variables. Generally, the Mira variables with longer periods are brighter in the IR fluxes and redder in the IR colors. In this work, we also revise and update the previous catalog of AGB stars in our Galaxy using the new sample of OGLE4 Mira variables. Now, we present a new catalog of 74,093 (64,609 O-rich and 9,484 C-rich) AGB stars in our Galaxy. A group of 23,314 (19,196 O-rich and 4,118 C-rich) AGB stars are identified based on the IRAS PSC and another group of 50,779 (45,413 O-rich and 5,366 C-rich) AGB stars are identified based on the AllWISE source catalog. For all of the AGB stars, we cross-identify the IRAS, AKARI, MSX, AllWISE, 2MASS, OGLE4, Gaia, and AAVSO counterparts and present various infrared 2CDs. Comparing the observations with the theory, we find that basic theoretical dust shell models can account for the IR observations fairly well for most of the AGB stars.

  • With the issuance of one-week fine dust emergency reduction measures in March 2019, the public's anxiety about fine dust is increasingly growing. In order to assess the application of air purifying plant-based bio-filters to public facilities, this study presented a method for measuring pollutant reduction effects by creating an indoor environment for continuous discharge of particle pollutants and conducted basic studies to verify whether indoor air quality has improved through the system. In this study conducted in a lecture room in spring, the background concentration was created by using mosquito repellent incense as a pollutant one hour before monitoring. Then, according to the schedule, the fine dust reduction capacity was monitored by irrigating for two hours and venting air for one hour. PM10, PM2.5, and temperature & humidity sensors were installed two meters front of the bio-filters, and velocity probes were installed at the center of the three air vents to conduct time-series monitoring. The average face velocity of three air vents set up in the bio-filter was 0.38±0.16 m/s. Total air-conditioning air volume was calculated at 776.89±320.16㎥/h by applying an air vent area of 0.29m×0.65m after deducing damper area. With the system in operation, average temperature and average relative humidity were maintained at 21.5-22.3℃, and 63.79-73.6%, respectively, which indicates that it satisfies temperature and humidity range of various conditions of preceding studies. When the effects of raising relatively humidity rapidly by operating system's air-conditioning function are used efficiently, it would be possible to reduce indoor fine dust and maintain appropriate relative humidity seasonally. Concentration of fine dust increased the same in all cycles before operating the bio-filter system. After operating the system, in cycle 1 blast section (C-1, β=-3.83, β=-2.45), particulate matters (PM10) were lowered by up to 28.8% or 560.3㎍/㎥ and fine particulate matters (PM2.5) were reduced by up to 28.0% or 350.0㎍/㎥. Then, the concentration of find dust (PM10, PM2.5) was reduced by up to 32.6% or 647.0㎍/㎥ and 32.4% or 401.3㎍/㎥ respectively through reduction in cycle 2 blast section (C-2, β=-5.50, β=-3.30) and up to 30.8% or 732.7㎍/㎥ and 31.0% or 459.3㎍/㎥ respectively through reduction in cycle 3 blast section (C-3, β=5.48, β=-3.51). By referring to standards and regulations related to the installation of vegetation bio-filters in public facilities, this study provided plans on how to set up objective performance evaluation environment. By doing so, it was possible to create monitoring infrastructure more objective than a regular lecture room environment and secure relatively reliable data.

  • ANIR (Atacama Near InfraRed camera) is a near infrared camera for the University of Tokyo Atacama 1m telescope, installed at the summit of Co. Chajnantor (5,640 m altitude) in northern Chile. The high altitude and extremely low water vapor (PWV = 0.5 mm) of the site enable us to perform observation of hydrogen Paα emission line at 1.8751μm. Since its first light observation in June 2009, we have been carrying out a Paα narrow-band imaging survey of nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), and have obtained Paα for 38 nearby LIRGs listed in AKARI/FIS-PSC at the velocity of recession between 2,800 km/s and 8,100 km/s. LIRGs are affected by a large amount of dust extinction (AV~ 3 mag), produced by their active star formation activities. Because Paα is the strongest hydrogen recombination line in the infrared wavelength ranges, it is a good and direct tracer of dust-enshrouded star forming regions, and enables us to probe the star formation activities in LIRGs. We find that LIRGs have two star-forming modes. The origin of the two modes probably come from differences between merging stage and/or star-forming process.

  • As atmospheric fine dust problems in Korea become more serious, there are growing needs to find the concentration of fine particles in indoor and outdoor areas and there are increasing demands for sensor-based portable monitoring devices capable of measuring fine dust concentrations instantly. The low-cost portable monitoring devices have been widely manufactured and used without the prescribed certification standards which would cause unnecessary confusion to the concerned public. To evaluate the reliability those devices and to improve their usability, following studies were conducted in this work; 1) The comparisons between sensor-based devices and comparison with more accurate devices were performed. 2) Several experiments were conducted to understand usefulness of the portable monitoring devices. As results, the absolute concentration levels need to be adjusted due to insensitivity of the tiny light scattering sensors in the portable devices, but their linearity and reproducibility seem to be acceptable. By using those monitoring devices, users are expected to have benefits of recognizing the changes of concentration more quickly and could help preventing themselves from the adverse health impacts.

  • As the allergic diseases in patients are increasing, it is important to find out the allergens. A multiple antigen simultaneous test(MAST) is a simple method for in vitro measurement of allergen-specific IgE antibodies. This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between allergen-specific IgE antibodies, serum total IgE and peripheral eosinophil count in the allergic patients. According to the results of the study, the total IgE positive rate(above class 2) from the inhalent is 96.97%, and that from food panel is 98.06%. The research showed that the positive rate of the allergen-specific IgE was House dust 51.52%, D. farinae 45.46%, Cat 31.99% in inhalent panel, and 55.34%, 42.72%, 34.96% in food panel. Serum total IgE was associated with allergy, however, allergy was not always associated with eosinophilia.

  • We present a study of outflows on 24 embedded young stellar objects selected from the source list of the Dust, Ice, and Gas in Time (DIGIT) Herschel key program. To study the relation between the CO outflows observed in low-J transitions and the properties of protostars more consistently with a homogeneous data set, we mapped the CO outflows of the selected targets in the J = 1-0 and J = 2-1 lines with two Korean telescopes (SRAO and TRAO). We compare CO outflow force (FCO) with the bolometric luminosity, (Lbol) bolometric temperature, and the FIR molecular line luminosities of CO, H2O, OH, and [O I] detected by the Herschel-PACS observations. We find that FCO of J = 1-0 is greater than that of 2-1 by a factor of ~ 2. The well known correlation between FCO21 and Lbol is not very evident in our sample as a whole, but they show a rather strong correlation when IRAM 04191+1522 is excluded. IRAM 04191+1522 has relatively high FCO21 in spite of its low Lbol. This object is a well-known VeLLO, which is believed in the quiescent phase of the episodic mass accretion in the embedded stage. Lbol traces a current accretion, but FCO21 traces accretion happened long ago. Therefore, the low-Lbol with the high-FCO21 can be explained by the episodic accretion. FCO21 shows little correlation with individual FIR line luminosities of CO, H2O, OH, while [O I] and total FIR line luminosity seem to have correlations with FCO21. This result is interpreted as the accretion energy deposits on species differently depending on shock properties, but the total FIR line luminosity sums the total accretion energy dispersed to different species.
