  • This study examines the interactions between KTB spot and futures markets using the daily prices from March 4, 2002 to January 31, 2005. We use Granger causality test, impulse Response Analysis and Variance Decomposition through vector autoregressive analysis (VAR). However, considering the long-term relationships between the level variables of KTB spot and futures, we introduced Vector Error Correction Model. The main results are as follows. According to the results of Granger-causality test and impulse response analysis, we find that the yields of KTB forward have a great influence on the change of KTB spot but not vice versa. In terms of volatility analysis, there is no inter-dependence between KTB forward and spot markets. In the variance decomposition analysis we find that the short-term KTB forward has much more impact on the KTB spot market than the long-term KTB forward does. We think these results are meaningful for bond investors who are in charge of capital asset pricing valuation, risk management and international portfolio management.

  • In the paper, the effects of sidecar on index arbitrage trading and non-index arbitrage trading in the Korean stock market are examined. The analyses of return, volatility, and liquidity dynamics illustrate that there are no distinct differences for index arbitrage group and non-index arbitrage group surrounding the sidecar events. For further analysis, we construct pseudo-sidecar sample and analyse the effects of the actual sidecar and pseudo-sidecar on arbitrage sample and non-index arbitrage sample. The result of analysis using pseudo-sidecar shows that the differences between index arbitrage group and non-index arbitrage group are larger in pseudo-sidecar sample than in actual sidecar sample. This means that former results can be explained by temporary order clustering in one side before and after the event. Sidecar has little effect on non-index arbitrage group, however, it has relatively large effect on arbitrage group. These results imply that it needs to redesign the sidecar system of the Korean stock market which applies for all program trading including arbitrage and non-index arbitrage trading.

  • The effects of program trading halts system (sidecar) on information asymmetry of program trading stocks, index arbitrage stocks, and non-index arbitrage stocks in the Korean stock market are examined. Effective spread and number of program trade of each stock are used as proxy variables for information asymmetry. The main results are as follows; Firstly, we find that effective spreads of program trading stocks in the post-halt period decrease significantly following the halt period. This means that sidecar has the effect of reducing information asymmetry in the Korean stock market. Secondly, the mitigation effect of information asymmetry of program trading stocks works only in buy-program trading stocks, but not in sell-program trading stocks. Thirdly, the results show that there are no distinct differences for index arbitrage group and non-index arbitrage group surrounding the sidecar events. In other words, program trading halts system has a mitigating effect of information asymmetry in not only index arbitrage trading stocks but also non-index arbitrage stocks. Fourthly, this mitigation effect works only in buy-sample not in sell-sample like in program trading stocks. And lastly, the analyses result of number of program trade shows that number of program trade of almost of sample stocks increases after the sidecar events. This implies that the information asymmetry is not fully resolved during the halt period and the effect of news inducing sidecar is continuing after the event.

  • This paper empirically examines whether firms engage in a dynamic adjustment process toward target capital structure and, whether there is a target capital structure or mean reverting using the partial adjustment model while allowing for costly adjustment. Also we investigate the empirical determinants of optimal target capital structure in long term equilibrium. As a result, our empirical model captures at least several important features of capital structure behavior for Korean listed firms. First, Korean firms pursue target capital structure and also there is mean reverting phenomenon. Second, Non-Chaebol and small firm in adjustment speed is faster than Chaebol and large firm. Third, even capital market restricts the adjustment speed interestingly. Fourth, Korean firms have target behavior according to a degree of observed gap. Fifth, Korean firms close about one-fourth of the gap between their actual and target debt ratios within one year and thence targeting behavior explains far more of the observed changes in capital structure than market timing or pecking order considerations. Sixth, capital market is significant in determining optimal capital structure.

  • This Study aims to criticize national pension fund governance reform plan of Korea government and to search for an alternative direction of the reform. Firstly, I examine the theoretical basis of the Korean government reform plan by clarifying limits of application of agency theory to the public pension fund governance. Secondly, I try to reconstruct principles of the public pension fund governance with an alternative theoretical view emphasizing democracy principle. Thirdly, I evaluate the government reform plan with the basis of reconstructed pension fund governance principles. The government reform plan is expected to cause retrenchment of democracy and even political autonomy. It also would make worse the problem of pension fund autonomy from the financial market and the risk of the pension fund caused by market turbulence. Finally I suggest alternative direction of the pension fund governance reform emphasizing the democracy principle. This direction contains constructing co-determination structure of the state and the civil society, escalating controling power of the governing body to the administration body, setting the limits of the roles of the state, attaining of the autonomy from the financial market, strengthening organizational and social accountability.

  • In most of studies on market efficiency, the stability of risk measures and the normality of residuals unexplained by the pricing model are presumed. This paper re-examines stock splits, taking the possible violation of two assumptions into accounts. The results does not change the previous studies. But, the size of excess returns during the 2-week period before announcements decreases by 43%. The results also support that betas change around announcements and the serial autocorrelation of residuals is caused by events. Based on the results, the existing excess returns are most likely explained as a compensation to old shareholders for unwanted risk increases in their portfolio, or by uses of incorrect betas in testing models. In addition, the model suggested in the paper provides a measure for the speed of adjustment of the market to the new information arrival and the intensity of information contents.

  • From the perspective of corporate governance, we examine the acquirers' performance of mergers and acquisitions in KOSDAQ Market. The empirical results of our study show that inside an executive shareholders and outside minor shareholders, affect acquirers' performance in M&A's : the ownership of outside minor shareholders is positively correlated with the performance of acquirers. and, the ownership of insiders, such as that of an executive shareholders, does have significant effect on the performance of M&A's. Since the current literature concludes that the improvement of corporate governance in KOSDAQ Market would enhance the shareholders' wealth, the results of our study implies that outside minor investors, as well as insiders, are playing an important role in the corporate governance.

  • Enhanced index tracking is a problem of optimizing the objective function to generate returns above the index based on the index tracking that follows the market return. In order to avoid problems such as large transaction costs and illiquidity, we used a method of constructing a portfolio by selecting only some of the stocks included in the index. Commonly used enhanced index tracking methods tried to find the optimal portfolio with only one objective function in all tested periods, but it is almost impossible to find the ultimate strategy that always works well in the volatile financial market. In addition, it is important to improve generalization performance beyond optimizing the objective function for training data due to the nature of the financial market, where statistical characteristics change significantly over time, but existing methods have a limitation in that there is no direct discussion for this. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes ensemble learning that composes a portfolio by combining several objective functions and a 3-stage portfolio selection algorithm that can select a portfolio by applying criteria other than the objective function to the training data. The proposed method in an experiment using the S&P500 index shows Sharpe ratio that is 27% higher than the index and the existing methods, showing that the 3-stage portfolio selection algorithm and ensemble learning are effective in selecting an enhanced index portfolio.

  • The government has supported the innovation of private firms by intervening the market for various purposes, such as preventing market failure, alleviating information asymmetry, and allocating resources efficiently. Although the government's R&D budget increased rapidly in the 2000s, it is not clear whether the government intervention has made desirable impact on the market. To address this, the current study attempts to explore this issue by doing a systematic literature review on foreign and domestic papers in an integrated way. In total, 168 studies are analyzed using contents analysis approach and various lens, such as policy additionality, policy tools, firm size, unit of analysis, data and method, are adopted for analysis. Overlapping policy target, time lag between government intervention and policy effects, non-linearity of financial supports, interference between different polices, and out-dated R&D tax incentive system are reported as factors hampering the effect of the government intervention. Many policy prescriptions, such as program evaluation indices reflecting behavioral additionality, an introduction of policy mix and evidence-based policy using machine learning, are suggested to improve these hurdles.
