  • The paper examines the effects of tax incentives on corporate R&D expenditures. We regress tax incentives and financial variables on the increase or the level of corporate R&D expenditures. Tax incentive variables are the magnitude of R&D tax credit and the level of reserve for R&D, while financial variables are the amount or increase of R&D expenditures in prior years, profitability, cash flows and Tobin Q. Sample firms are selected among the listed companies which reported R&D expenditures in the financial statements from 1995 to 2000. The results indicate that increase and level of R&D expenditures is positively influenced by the magnitude of R&D tax credit and the level of reserve for R&D. The amount of R&D expenditures has positive relationship with prior one-year R&D expenditures, while the increase of R&D expenditures has negative relationship with prior year increase and recent three year's average of R&D expenditures. The evidence is consistent to the hypothesis and results of other studies, which suggest that tax incentives for R&D encourage the corporate R&D expenditures.

  • This study is intended to analyze what trend the EVA technique recently actively studied shows according to the financial structure of the firm. As a result of analysis, it was found that the firm with the entire sum of its capitals depleted showed the negative value in both the EVA on the basis of operating profit and the EVA on the basis of cash flow from 5 years before its capitals were depleted. Especially, its EVA showed the negative value more strongly than the cash flow accruing by business activity. In analyzing the EVA of the firm with more than 1,500% of the debt to equity ratio, its EVA also showed the negative value from 5 years ago. But the firm with the good financial structure of the debt to equity of less than 35% showed the positive value in the EVA on the basis of its cash flow from 5 years ago. As can be seen from this result, the fact is that the firm can survive only when it raises its EVA through its structural change(re-engineering) and business innovation. Therefore, firms need to seek to turn their business philosophy or policy into the promotion of business innovation and business management emphasizing technology in order to improve their EVA indicators.

  • One of the concerns that have received substantial interest in the accounting field, in particular, in accounting education, is the increasing scarcity and demand for professional accountants around the globe. This study aims to investigate the effects of financial rewards (FR), parents' and peers' influence (PPIF), and benefits and cost (BCE) on students' intention to pursue a career in accounting. A quantitative, convenient random sampling approach was used, and an online survey was conducted to collect data from students studying in China. A total of 311 valid responses were used for model testing based on the theory of reasoned action and the theory of planned behavior. The findings of the study include the positive effects of FR, PPIF, and BCE on accounting career choice (ACC). This study illustrates that FR is the most dominant factor (β=0.479) for influencing ACC. Furthermore, the used factor explained 70% variation in ACC. The results of the study have implications both for accounting firms and universities whether offering or not offering accounting as a major. This study provides a global perspective, which keeps this study unique from other studies. And in this study, the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) has been used which is randomly used in accounting research.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate empirically interaction among the financing decision, investment decision, and profitability by using 41 fisheries corporations in Korea, and to suggest implications of the empirical results for government's financial policy for fisheries corporations. Sample period is 19 years from 1982 till 2000. This analysis method employs the two stage least squares(2SLS) estimation method. From the results of regression analysis by 2SLS estimation method, the adjusted $R^2$ values were high and the overall F values indicated significant. The empirical results of this study are as follows; (1) determinant factors of capital structure model for fisheries are profitability, firm-size, fisheries investment of total asset, and business risk. As pecking order theory explains, the higher is profitability the lower is debt ratio. The larger firm-size, the higher is debt ratio. The higher is fisheries investment of total asset and business risk, the higher is debt ratio. (2) determinant factors of investment model for fisheries are the change of sales, business risk, and debt ratio. These factors have positive relation to fisheries investment of total asset (3) determinant factors of profitability model for fisheries are fisheries investment of total asset and debt ratio. These factors have negative relation to profitability. On the basis of analysis results, on the government's financial policy for fisheries corporations, I suggests that with interest rate reduction, the government should lend more funds to solve the crisis in the financial structure of the fisheries firms

  • Purpose - This study investigates the effect of auditor change on client firm's accounting (financial statement) comparability. Design/methodology/approach - The comparability of accounting information is measured by the difference in accruals between the two firms. Additionally, the study uses earnings-stock return relationship as another proxy of accounting comparability. In particular, the paper examines whether there is a systematic difference between initial audit years and the other years with respect to the client firm's accounting comparability. Moreover, current study tests how changes in auditor size or industry expertise before and after the switch of auditors affect the accounting comparability. Findings - The results show that the level of accounting comparability is lower in the year of auditor change than in the other years. Furthermore, this lower level of comparability is derived by the observations that switch their auditors from non-Big4 to non-Big4 or from non-specialist to non-specialist. These results are consistent when accounting comparability is measured by different proxies. Research implications or Originality - The findings of this study provide important policy implications for the regulations related with auditor selection.

The findings show that, for successful digital transformation, it is necessary to maximize active and systematic use of advanced online and digital technologies that form the basis of business and create an open, horizontal organizational culture and communication system to equally share and distribute advanced technologies and competencies through the entire organization. Furthermore, this study also discovers the legitimacy to concentrate the organizational competencies and know-how in providing technical training for members, expanding customer experience, and improving customer satisfaction services to contribute to improving the quality of life for members of the organization and creating and improving social and public infrastructures, instead of using digital transformation only to improve productivity of organizations or firms. As such, it is necessary to concentrate corporate competencies in establishing and supplying digital transformation that is not just human-centered but also has productivity, innovativeness, and reliability at the same time.

  • The 2008 global financial crisis was triggered by the Lehman Brothers crisis caused by the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States This crisis has had an impact on the globe's dry bulk shipping market by reducing dry bulk cargo volume. An oversupply of dry bulk carriers caused a serious recession in the globe's dry-bulk shipping industry and shipbuilding industry. In this situation, the Korean dry-bulk shipping companies were victims of the quagmire of a long recession since the global financial crisis and could not overcome this crisis. This condition forced them into severe financial risk Thus, it caused many shipping companies to file for bankruptcy. In this study, we classified Korean ocean-going dry-bulk shipping companies into two groups, that is, the solvent group and the insolvent group. We also separated the research period before and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Then we investigated the differences in the major financial ratios of the two groups by t-test and found that some financial ratios such as profitability ratios and growth ratios showed the difference between the two groups with statistical significance. The significance of this study is as follow. First, the shipping company management is also crucial for the systematic management of financial strength and business strategy, it is crucial to manage cargo which a high profitable freight. • The information technology(IT) development of telecommunication, along with the informationalization over the world, enables the firms to process their inner and outer operations through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system. And the concept of logistics has become more important to the enterprises in strategic sense because it had aggrandized itself to more comprehensive and integrative concept. Also the world shipping market is more competitive than any other market. In these environment, to maintain competitve power, shipping firms process operations by Logistics Information system(LIS), And then, reduce the working processes, working time and its costs. So the LIS has become more important in developing our national logistics system and industry. Therefore, this study purposes on empirically analyzing the activation factors of shipping LIS and the relationship these factors with logistic performances in the shipping industry. Considering environments of Shipping logistics information system, this study sets up the research model and hypothesis to examine the activation factors of shipping LIS and the relationship these factors with logistic performances. We used the field data on the 163 numbers of firms(29 overseas shipping companies and 133 forwarding Agency) to get the empirical evidence. According to the study results, The shipping LIS activation factors which the sample firms recognized as important: were top manager's support, well structured communication channel, strategic plan's connection and inner informationalization level. And IS organization & human resources, IS discipline & training, software development, IS organizational alignment, database management system, information standardization, competitive advantage, financial support and government support represent partially significant. Also, the current shipping LIS's main problems are expensive system cost, standardization of working process's, institution's imperfection and system's interaction defect. So these problems must be improved to activate shipping LIS.
