  • To reduce the air side pressure drop in air-cooled heat exchanger, tow-in type winglet vortex generators are applied. A specially designed multiple-channel test core was used in the experiments for the various geometry of winglet vortex generators. The proposed tow-in type vortex generator gives significant separation delay, reduces form drag, and removes the zone of poor heat transfer from near-wake of the tubes. The results show the significant pressure drop reduction for the tow-in win91e1 vortex generators with the similar enhancement of the heat transfer as other vortex generator applications in heat exchanger. In the range of Reynolds number of 350 to 2100 the pressure drop decrease 8∼15% and 34∼55% for the in-line and staggered tube banks, respectively, compared to those without vortex generators.

  • An experimental study on the behavior of the water hold-up by spraying of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger with regard to the surface characteristics, i.e., contact angles, was conducted. The dynamic contact angles (DCA) were measured, and water hold-up by spraying (WHS) was conducted in the experiment. It is found that heat exchanger surface characteristics, spray pressure, spray water temperature and heat exchanger surface temperature play an important role in WHS. In order to evaluate relationship between WHS and surface characteristics, test conditions are determined through a contour analysis. A correlation was proposed to predict WHS as a function of DCA. With its test efficiency and consuming time, the prediction method can be used to evaluate WHS performance.

  • The present work presents condensation heat transfer and pressure drop data for the flow of R-12 in flat extruded aluminum tubes with small hydraulic diameters. The tube outside dimensions are $18mm(width){\times}1.7mm(height)$. Three types of internal geometry with the same outside dimensions are tested : sample 1 (7 tube holes), sample 2 (13 tube holes) and sample 3 (7 tube holes, micro-fin). The overall heat transfer coefficient is obtained for air-to-refrigerant heat transfer, and the Wilson plot method is used to determine the heat transfer coefficient for refrigerant flow. The sample 2 and sample 3 show significantly higher performance than sample 1. The heat transfer rates for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 9% and 12% higher, respectively, than sample 1. The friction factors for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 11.9% and 2.4% higher, respectively, than sample 1.

  • Absorption of water vapor into LiBr-$H_2O$ O solution flowing over a finned inclined surface is numerically investigated. The momentum, energy, and diffusion equation are numerically solved using a finite difference method. The four different shapes of the wall surfaces are considered to find the best surface for absorption assuming that the wall temperature and the surface tension are constant. The effects of the fin interval and Reynolds number are investigated. Based on the numerical results, it is known that the parabolic surface shows better absorption performance than the other surfaces, and that water vapor absorption increases gradually with decreasing the fin interval.

  • Plate-fin type recuperators for the gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system were designed using commercial design software, MUSE. Heat transfer efficiency and total pressure drop in the recuperator were calculated to confirm required recuperator performance. Both counter flow and cross flow type plate-fin recuperators were designed. Results show that the counter flow type has higher efficiency and short core length, but the cross flow type is simpler to construct because the cross flow type does not need additional distributors. Two or three headers for the each recuperator core will be designed and tested to evaluate best header design. The designed recuperators and headers which will be designed later will be constructed, tested, and used in gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system.

  • The absorption characteristics of water vapor into a LiBr-H$_2$O solution flowing down on finned inclined surfaces are numerically investigated in order to study the absorbing performances of different surface shapes of finned tubes as an absorber element. A three-dimensional numerical model is developed. The momentum, energy, and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously using a finite difference method. In order to obtain the temperature and concentration distributions, the Runge-Kutta and the Successive over relaxation methods are used. The flat, circular, elliptic, and parabolic shapes of the tube surfaces are considered in order to find the optimal surface shapes for absorption. In addition, the effects of the fin intervals and Reynolds numbers are studied. The results show that the absorption mainly happens near the fin tip due to the temperature and concentration gradient, and the absorbing performance of the parabolic surface is better than those of the other surfaces.

  • Energetic particle strikes the device and induces data corruption in the configuration memory (CRAM), causing errors and even malfunctions in a system on chip (SoC). Software-based fault injection is a convenient way to assess device performance. In this paper, dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR) is adopted to make fault injection on a Xilinx 16 nm FinFET Ultrascale+ MPSoC. And the reconfiguration module implements the Sobel and Gaussian image filtering, respectively. Fault injections are executed on the static and reconfiguration modules' bitstreams, respectively. Another contribution is that the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) method is applied to evaluate the system reliability, according to the obtained injection results. This paper proposes a software-based solution to estimate programmable device vulnerability.
