  • Numerical analyses have been performed to obtain the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients and the absorption mass flux from a falling film of LiBr solution. In the present study, the behavior of laminar-wavy falling film in the vertical absorber was studied analytically and experimentally. The change of absorption performance on mean film thickness, wave amplitude, wave celerity was analysed. The heat and mass transfer equations are solved simultaneously to give the temperature and concentration variations at the LiBr solution/refrigeration vapor interface and at the wall. Effects of uniform film, wavy film and film Reynolds number on the heat and mass transfer coefficients have been estimated. The analytical results of the uniform and wavy falling film in the bare tube was higher than experimental result for $Rd_{t}<100$. The absorption performance showed the maximum at the wavy film by the insert device(spring).

  • Heat transfer characteristics were investigated for the falling film flowing down the outside of an electrically heated vertical tube. Water was used for the falling film, and its Reynolds number was varied in the range of 70~500. Because water is heated and evaporated as it flows down, both sensible and latent heat transfer should be considered. The effect of the surrounding air movement was investigated by changing the direction of the air injection; without air injection, parallel-flow, and counter-flow. For all cases, sensible teat transfer rate was almost linearly increased with the increasing film flow rate. It was found that the film heat transfer coefficient was hardly influenced by the parallel air flow. However, the counter-flow of air reduced the heat transfer coefficient, which might be caused by the uneven distribution or flooding of the film. At high heat flux, a sudden change of the film heat transfer coefficient was detected as the film flow rate reached the transition value. It is supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the change in the film flow pattern.

  • To determine an operational condition of an adhesion-type oil skimmer, it is important to estimate the withdrawal rate for a given driving velocity of the skimmer and material properties of the oil. As a theoretical model for this problem the formation of an oil film on a vertically driven flat plate is investigated. The previous steady-state analysis made in the field of coating industry are reviewed. These studies have been made under the assumptions of small Reynolds and capillary number, which is adequate for coating process but not for oil skimming. An alternative analysis based on the linear stability theory is made. Comparisons with the experimental results reveal that the stability analysis gives a correct estimation of the withdrawal rate for high capillary number at which the previous theory losses its validity.

  • An experimental study is carried out to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer of outside helical tubes. The main heat exchanger consists of twelve curved columns with each 300mm diameter and the total length of 1.2m copper tube having an outer diameter of 19.05mm with 1.5mm thickness. Water flows down the outside of helical tube, where flow patterns are the vertical film falling flow, immerged flow, and mixed-flow which is the combination of film falling flow and immerged flow. Refrigerant 11 flow the inside of the tube countercurrently. The experimental range of inside flow rate is 1.7~3.2$\ell$/min and outside flow rate is 21-33$\ell$/min. The results are presented as Nusselt number with corresponding Reynolds number for variety of outside and inside flow rates. The heat transfer rates of the mixed flow are 8 to 56% higher than those of film falling flow or immerged flow only. Interpretation of the results is given on the basis of physical reasoning and the correlation equations.

  • In the present work, a numerical study of a horizontal falling film evaporator in a multi-effect distillation (MED) plant is performed. Tube bundles in the evaporator are described as porous media, and a volume-averaged method is applied. To calculate the fluid flow and phase change in the evaporator due to heat transfer in the system, FLUENT and user-defined functions (UDF) are used. To observe the performance of the evaporator under different operational conditions, tests are conducted for a steam mass flux ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 $kg/m^2s$ in the horizontal tube, for mass fraction of the noncondensable gas in the tube inlet ranging from 0% to 1%, and for film Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 1,000 for the falling film. The evaporation rate increases with the steam mass flux and Reynolds number. In contrast, the evaporation rate decreases by 0.87% with a 1% increase in the mass fraction of the noncondensable gas in the tube.

  • In this paper, film cooling characteristics at supersonic free stream conditions were examined experimentally by applying an IR-thermography. Film cooling experiments were carried out in a free-jet facility at Mach number of 3.0 and with unit Reynolds number of $42.53{\times}10^6$ and $69.35{\times}10^6$ using wedge shaped film cooling model which has a converging film cooling nozzle. Film cooling efficiency was calculated by measuring the surface temperature of PEEK(Polyether Ether Ketone) and the effects of angle of attack and blowing ratios on the film cooling efficiency were examined. The measured wall temperature was significantly reduced by the film cooling flow compared with the results without the film cooling flow. The usefulness of film cooling was also confirmed by the surface heat flux calculated using the surface temperature history of PEEK. As the blowing ratio increases the protected area of PEEK was also expanded along the direction of free stream and film cooling flow.

  • In the present study, the improvement of absorption characteristics on combined heat and mass transfer process in a falling film of a vertical absorber by change of geometric parameters were studied experimentally and analytically. The energy and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously to give the temperature and concentration variations at the liquid solution-refrigerant vapor interface and at the wall. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by refrigerant vapor in the absorber. Effects of film Reynolds number, geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and flow pattern on heat and mass transfer performances have been also investigated. Especially, effects of the flow pattern by geometric parameters have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the absorber. As a numerical and experimental result, maximum absorption rate was shown at the wave-flow by insert device (spring). The error ranges between experiment and analysis were from 5.8 to 12% at Re$_{f}$ > 100.0.

  • An experimental study has been performed on the heat transfer characteristics of condensation by the injecting steam flow in the tube. The comparison between results of experimental data and available data concerning equivalent Reynolds number has studied. As the result, the followings were obtained. 1. The shear stress of the radial direction in the tube when the injecting steam flow was condensed can be written as root($\tau$sub(0)/$\tau$sub(0v))=1+1.46X sub(tt) super(0.20). 2. The effect of the heat transfer in the injecting steam flow was less than the value of equivalent Reynolds number. The reason are the nonuniform fluid film of the axial and radial direction in the tube. 3. The value of N sub(u) by the heat transfer of condensation can be written as N sub(u)=1.08$\times$[{$\rho$ sub(l) d/$\mu$ sub(l)}/{$\delta$+(2.5/P sub(rl)) ln(y sub(i)/$\delta$)}]$\times${$\tau$ sub(0)/ $\rho$ sub(l)} super(1/2).

  • Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of a turbine blade, cylindrical body model is used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is $7.1{\times}10^4$. The effects of coolant flow rates are studied for blowing ratios of 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 and 1.7, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized with infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film cooling performance could be significantly improved by the shaped injection holes. For higher blowing ratio, the spanwise-diffused injection holes are better due to the lower momentum flux away from the wall plane at the hole exit.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of using various shapes of turbulence promoter on the heat-transfer enhancement of 2-D and 3-D arrays of rectangular modules in a rectangular channel for design of noiseless and low-powered cooling fan in the electronic systems. Measurements of heat/mass transfer coefficients were made using a naphthalene sublimation technique, and the friction factors were measured for Reynolds numbers in the range$3.3{\time}10^3$~$1.6{\time}10^4$. Flow visualization was peformed by oil-film method. It was found that heat transfer and pressure drop increased remarkably due to the existence of the promoter. The results of the performance evaluation based on equal pumping power were showed that substantial heat-transfer enhancement was obtained at low Reynolds number range by use of a turbulence promoter.
