  • The discovery of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) has opened up exciting opportunities for the development of novel materials with desirable properties. The superior mechanical properties and excellent electrical conductivity make CNTs a good filler material for composite reinforcement. However, the dispersal of CNTs in a polymer solution or melt is difficult due to their tendency to agglomerate. Many attempts have been made to fully utilize CNTs for the reinforcement of polymeric media. Therefore, different types of polymer/CNTs nanocomposites have been synthesized and investigated. This paper reviews the current progress in the preparation, properties and application of polyamide/CNTs(nylon/CNTs) nanocomposites. The effectiveness of different processing methods has increased the dispersive properties of CNTs and the amelioration of their poor interfacial bonding. Moreover, the mechanical properties are significantly enhanced even with a small amount of CNTs. This paper also discusses how reinforcement with CNTs improves the electrical thermal and optical properties of nylon/CNTs nanocomposites.

  • In order to apply a precast deck to continuous composite bridges, several experiments and analytical studies were performed. Design criterion for crack prevention should be such that it does not permit tension at the joint to occur when the service loads are applied. Details of the shear pocket for studs and material properties of filler in the pocket and the joint are very important considerations in design and construction. Combination of longitudinal prestressing methods, internal tendon and prestressing after shear connection, should be used for prevention of cracking in continuous precast deck bridges. Design guides for the determination of prestressing force are suggested.

  • In general, polymer concrete has more excellent mechanical properties and durability than Portland cement concrete, but very sensitive to heat and has large deformations. In this study, the long-term creep behaviors was predicted by the short-term creep test, and then the characteristic of creep of recycled-PET polymer concrete was defined by material and experimental variables. The error in the predicted long-term creep values is less than 5 percent for all polymer concrete systems. The filler carry out an important role to restrict the creep strains of recycled PET polymer concrete. The creep strain and specific on using the CaCO3 were less than using fly-ash. the creep increases with an increase in the applied stress, but not proportional the rate of stress increase ratio. The creep behavior of polymer concrete using recycled polyester resin is not a linear viscoelastic behavior.

  • The effects of particle size on the mechanical and electrical properties of epoxy/spherical silica composites were studied. The silica particle sizes were varied from 5 to 30 ${\mu}m$ and the filler content was fixed to 60 wt%. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out and the interfacial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrical insulation breakdown strength was estimated using sphere-sphere electrodes with different insulation thicknesses of 1, 2 and 3 mm. The tensile strength and flexural strength increased with decreasing particle size, while electrical insulation breakdown strength increased with increasing particle size.

  • In this paper, electrical characteristics of EP(engineering plastic) studies for the purpose of electrical insulation materials. A base resin of the EP are Polyamide and Polyphthalamide. And filler is Glass Fibre. Electrical characteristics of EP represents volume resistivity, arc resistance and breakdown voltage according to glass fiber contents. We compare before water immersion and after water immersion. As the results of experiments, Polyphthalamide has good characteristics of insulation material rather than Polyamide as an insulator for electrical power system.

  • An analytical model has been developed to predict the elastic properties of a filled resin reinforced by chopped fibers, a three-phase composite such as a filled sheet molding compound(SMC). In the model the matrix material and fillers form an effective matrix. The effective matrix is then considered to be reinforced with long fibers lying in the sheet plane but randomly oriented in the plane. Expressions for the resulting transversely isotropic composite properties are explicitly presented. Using this model, the Young's and shear moduli are calculated for the SMC sample with filler weight fraction of 35% and fiber content of 30%. The same properties are also determined experimentally. The agreement between the calculated and measured elastic moduli is found to be very good for the in-plane properties. However, the out-of-plane properties show a large difference because the effect of voids is not taken into account in the model.

  • In this study, the effect of polyurethane foam filler, in addition to surface layer thickness and core material thickness, on vibration characteristics of sandwich structures was investigated. The manufacturing process was carried out according to the Taguchi method. The natural frequencies and damping ratios of the produced samples were determined experimentally for fixed-free boundary conditions. In addition, solid models were developed for test samples and their finite element analyses were performed with $ANSYS^{(R)}$ to obtain their natural frequencies and mode shapes. An acceptably good agreement was found with the comparison of experimental results with the numerically obtained ones. The most effective parameters on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich structure were determined by the Taguchi method.

  • Weld overlay has been developed to improve the property of material surface which is used in the severe environment. Weld overlay is the process which uses an arc heat and welds different composition of alloy on the substrate for the improvements of heat resistance and wear resistance. Weld overlay has a lot of advantages which are high hardness, good processing efficiency, easy controlling of layer thickness, good quality and low cost. In this study, weld overlay was performed by MAG welding on the base metal(SS400) with filler metal which contain composite powders(Cr+C+Mn+Mo+NbC) and solid wire(JIS-YGW11). Characterization of hardness and wear resistance were analyzed by EDS, EPMA, XRD and observations of microstructure were performed to investigate characteristics of overlays. The experimental results of overlaid specimens manufactured with Cr+C+Mn+Mo+NbC powders were obtained as fellows. ${\alpha}-phase$, M(Fe, Cr)3C and NbC of overlays were increased with decreasing the wire feed rates and increasing powder feed rates. Also the hardness of overlays were increased and the specific wear were decreased.

  • In order to characterize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of grout materials used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts and cement grouts being adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). In addition, material segregation can be observed when the viscosity of grout is relatively low. The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than in case of the bentonite grouts. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.

  • Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the laser welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains 3%Al and 1%Zn. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. And formability was checked with the Erichsen tester. For the results, the performance of weld in laser welding was enough for press forming such as car body. But it was recommended to use filler wire for reduce the under fill.
