  • Pervaporation is the most promising technique for the recovery of ethanol from the fermentation system. To date, extensive research has been conducted on the exploration of membrane materials with favorable properties. In this paper, we primarily review the performance of adsorbent-filled rubbery membranes. In addition, the fundamental mechanisms of ethanol and water molecules transportation through composite membranes are demonstrated, particularly from the perspective of cluster formation. Finally, future prospects are also analyzed to develop the guidelines for the future development of excellent membrane materials for ethanol concentration. This paper is not meant to be an exhaustive overview, rather a specialized summary that allows readers to select the information appropriated to their topics.

  • In this study, filling performance of concrete is investigated experimentally for the developmenmt of the concrete to be used in concrete filled steel tubular columns with inner diaphrams. Water-cement ratio with 3 levels, unit water contents with 5 levels, unit coarse aggregate contents with 5 levels, and slump flow with 3 levels are selected for test variables. For the estimation of the filling properties of the concrete, slump flow, V-type funnel time, U-type box height are measured and compared. A device which simulates the steel tubular column is designed and three kinds of concrete are tested with it. As the results, the filling performance is decreased with increasing coarse aggregate content. And, within the scope of this study, concretes with coarse aggregate content less than 880 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ show good filling performance. To prevent excessive settlement of the concrete pumped into the steel tubular column, slump flow should be controlled within the limited range.

  • The present paper outlines the numerical investigation of the incident wave interactions with fully submerged and floating dual double hull pontoon/vertical porous membrane breakwaters. Two dimensional five fluid-domains hydro-elastic formulation was carried out in the context of linear wave body interaction theory to study the wave interaction with the double hull of pontoon-membranes. The submerged circular pontoon is consisted of double hulls, which is filled with water in the void space between the outer structure and inner solid buoyant structure. Hydrodynamic characteristics of the proposed system with dual floating double-hull-pontoons filled with water have been studied numerically for the various incident waves. This study is a beginning stage research for the dual double hull porous pontoons/vertical porous membranes breakwaters which is ideally designed in order to suppress significantly the transmitted and reflected waves simultaneously.

  • Difference in recovery behaviors from the circular deformation of natural rubber (NR) composites aged in air and distilled water, respectively were investigated. Recoveries of the samples aged in air were larger than those of the samples aged in distilled water. Recovery rates of the samples reinforced with filler were faster than those of the unreinforced ones. Recovery rates of the carbon black-filled samples were faster than those of the silica-filled ones. Difference in the recovery behaviors according to the aging media can be explained by the crosslinking density changes and the annealing effect.

  • There are three main production processes in the manufacture of concrete-filled square steel columns. The first process is known as the 'box-type process' or 'four-seam method,' wherein four beams are welded together at the seams. The second is the 'cold-forming process' or 'two-seam method,' wherein the seams of two channel beams are welded together. The third is the 'pressing process' or 'one-seam method,' wherein a circular column is pressed until it becomes a square column. In calculating the production cost for the making of a steel tube, it is very important to consider the welding process to be used and the desiredthickness of the steel tube, such as a square column that was developed under a new method, formed through the four-seam flare welding method at the center of the steel column width, following the L-shape formation. Certain tests were suggested in this study to evaluate the welding amount of concrete-filled square steel columns. With the parameters of the production method of a square steel column, the thickness of the steel square columns, and the welding amount, six specimens were produced. A structural test and finite-element analysis were conducted to assess the behavior of the steel column according to the water pressure inside the steel columns.

  • This experiment was carried out at Chuncheon substation, Crop Experiment Station to investigate the effect of cold water irrigation on the growth and grain yield of rice in 1990. Irrigation of cold water (17$^{\circ}C$) delayed 10 to 19 days of heading, and reduced about 17 to 31% of plant height in terms of culm and panicle length. Number of panicle per plant was decreased and / or increased by cold water irrigation. Cold water irrigation reduced spikelet number per panicle and percent of filled grain. Grain yield was increased but, straw weight was decreased according to water temperature gradient from inlet to outlet. There was varietal differences in head rice recovery by cold water treatment. In general the dark brown and / or black colored kernel increased at cold water inlet but decreased percent of green kernel. Alkali digestible value increased and amylose content decreased at cold water inlet.

  • It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

  • The study was designed to establish a more nearly quantitative method for assessing the marginal leakage of dental restorations. 27 Class V cavities with $45^{\circ}$ bevel joint were prepared and classified into 2 groups. One group was filled with Scotchbond and silux. The other group was filled with glass ionomer cement, Scotchbond and silux. After finishing, all specimens were subjected manually to 100 thermal cycles at $0^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ water-bath. They were soaked in a samarium nitrate solution for 3 hours, irradiated with flux of $6{\times}10^{12}$ neutrons/$cm^2$/sec for 11 hours, cooled for 200 hours, counted with the HPGE detector and the tracer uptake was determined by comparison with a standard of samarium (10 ${\mu}g$). The following results were obtained. 1. Both of the two groups showed a considerable amounts of marginal leakage. 2. The group filled without glass ionomer cement base showed more marginal leakage than the group filled with glass ionomer cement base. 3. Neutron Activation Analysis produced a good quantitative method to measure the marginal leakage and samarium was appropriate to measure the marginal leakage of resin restorations using neutron activation analysis.

  • This paper presented the strength and environmental characteristics of reclaimed-ground filled with controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) made of coal ash, small amounts of cement, and water in a reclamation site and evaluated the possibility of the use of coal ash on reclamation materials for beneficial use. Three-month period of SPT, CPT, environmental effects evaluation etc. were conducted. N values and cone resistances in ground filled with CLSM were greater than or similar to those in dredging sand. In case of land filled with coal ash except cement these values were lower than those in dredging sand. The results of soil and seawater pollution were lower than test criteria without high pH. Also the values of PH test were measured between pH 5.0~9.0, the criteria of industrial water in the Law for the Underground Water of Korea.
