A PDA is used mainly for downloading data from a stationary server such as a desktop PC in an infrastructure network based on wireless LAN. Thus, the overall performance depends heavily on the performance of such downloading with PDA. Unfortunately, for a PDA the time taken to receive data from a PC is longer than the time taken to send it by 53%. Thus, we measured and analyzed all possible factors that could cause the receiving time of a PDA to be delayed with a test bed system. There are crucial factors: the TCP window size, file access time of a PDA, and the inter-packet delay that affects the receiving time of a PDA. The window size of a PDA during the downstream is reduced dramatically to 686 bytes from 32,581 bytes. In addition, because flash memory is embedded into a PDA, writing data into the flash memory takes twice as long as reading the data from it. To alleviate these, we propose three distinct remedies: First, in order to keep the window size at a sender constant, both the size of a socket send buffer for a desktop PC and the size of a socket receive buffer for a PDA should be increased. Second, to shorten its internal file access time, the size of an application buffer implemented in an application should be doubled. Finally, the inter-packet delay of a PDA and a desktop PC at the application layer should be adjusted asymmetrically to lower the traffic bottleneck between these heterogeneous terminals.
The release of iPhone by Apple in 2009 has changed the life pattern of an individual tremendously. That is, with the emergence of a smart phone, various services including voice/video call, camera, receiving and sending of e-mail, and web browsing have been realized. However, the broader the scope of the use of a smart phone has become, the greater the need for companies to introduce an MDM solution for protecting important documents has become. However the MDM solution may have a problem in that all data such as contacts, pictures, and memos saved in the smart phone can be accessed unlimitedly. For this reason, there is a risk that unwanted violation of privacy may happen to smart phone users. This paper proposed a plan to protect a personal privacy file of smart phone users, which disables access by others except for related smart phone users by enabling a person in charge of security or an MDM manager in a company to have access only to the file which was allowed by smart phone users to be disclosed and by saving non-disclosed files in a virtual disk.

In distributed file-systems, cooperative caching algorithm which owns the data cached at each node jointly is used to reduce an expense of disk access. Cooperative caching algorithm is the method that increases a cache hit-ratio and decrease a disk access as it holds the cache information of distributed systems in common and makes cache larger virtually. Recently, several cooperative caching algorithms decrease the message costs by using approximate information of the cache and increase the cache hit-ratio by using local and global cache fields dynamically. And they have an advantage that increases the whole field hit-ratio by sending a replaced block to the idel node on cache replacement in order to maintain the replaced block in the cache field. However the wrong approximate information deteriorates the performance, the concistency maintenance goes to great expense to exchange messeges and the cost that manages Age-information of each node to choose the idle node increases. In this thesis, we propose a cooperative cache algorithm that maintains correct cache information, minimizes the maintance cost for consistency and the management cost for cache Age-information. Also, we show the superiority of our algorithm through the performance evaluation.
When a PDA is used as a mobile terminal in an infrastructure network based on 802.11b standard wireless LAN, we measured and evaluated the performance of multimedia data transmission. In general, PDAs are mainly used tot receiving bulk data like multimedia data. However, while a PDA as a mobile host transfers multimedia data to a desktop PC as a fixed host in such a network, the time taken to receive data from the PC to the PDA is always longer than the time taken to send data from the PDA to the PC by at least 53%. Thus, we consider some critical factors that affect the time taken to receive Our experimental results show that with the PDA the time taken to access a file for writing is longer than the time taken to access a file for reading of to 4.11 times. In addition, a dramatic change of the site of the receiver window, from 686 bytes to 32,383 bytes, prolongs the time taken to receive. To transfer data without any inter-packet interval for the PDA and to increase the size of the TCP receive buffer will be effective in improving the delay to receive data.

While disk can be overwritten on updating data, because flash memory can not be overwritten on updating data, new data are updated in new area. If data are frequently updated, garbage collection, which is achieved by erasing blocks, should be performed to reclaim new area. Hence, because the number of erase operations is limited due to characteristics of flash memory, every block should be evenly written and erased. However, if data with access locality are processed by cost benefit algorithm with separation of hot block and cold block, though the performance of processing is high, wear-leveling is not even. In this paper, we propose CB-MB (Cost Benefit between Multi Bank) algorithm in which hot data are allocated in one bank and cold data in another bank, and in which role of hot bank and cold bank is exchanged every period. CB-MB showed that its performance was similar to that of others for uniform workload, however, the method provides much better performance than that of others for workload of access locality.

The shared disk file systems use a technique known as file system journaling to support recovery of metadata on the SAN(Storage Area Network). In the existing journaling technique, the metadata that is dirtied by one host must be updated to disk space before some hosts access it. The system performance is decreased because the disk access number is increased. In this paper, we describe a new recovery technique using a global buffer to decrease disk I/O. It transmits the dirtied metadata into the other hosts through Fibre Channel network on the SAN instead of disk I/O and supports recovery of a critical data by journaling a data as well as metadata.

This paper reports the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) project whose goal is to develop an operational framework to provide the K-12 teachers in the world with 'one-stop/any-stop' access to thousands of lesson plans, curriculum units and other Internet-based educational resources. To the IS-element Dublin Core base package, the GEM project added an 8-element, domain-specific GEM package. The GEM project employed the conceptual data modeling approach to designing the GEM database, used the Sybase relational database management system (RDBMS) to construct the backend database for storing the metadata of educational resources, and also employed the active server page (ASP) technology to provide Web interfaces to that database. The consortium members catalog lesson plans and other Internet-based educational resources using a cataloging module program that produces HTML meta tags. A harvest program collects these meta tags across the Internet and outputs an ASCII file that conforms to the standard agreed by the consortium members. A parser program processes this file to enter meta tags automatically into appropriate relational tables in the Sybase database. The conceptual/logical schemas of Dublin Core and GEM profile are presented. The advantages of conceptual modeling approach to manage metadata are discussed. A prototype system that provides access to the GEM metadata is available at http://lis.skku.ac.kr/gem/.

Memory errors can cause not only program malfunctions but also even unexpected system halt. Though a programmer checks memory errors, some memory errors with low occurrence frequency are missed to detect. In this paper, we propose a method for effectively detecting such memory errors using instruction transition diagrams through analyzing assembly codes obtained by disassembling an executable file. Out of various memory errors, local memory return errors, null pointer access errors and uninitialized pointer access errors are targeted for detection. When applying the proposed method to various programs including well-known open source programs such as Apache web server and PHP script interpreter, some potential memory errors are detected.
