  • $TiO_2$ has excellent photocatalytic properties and several studies have reported the increase in its specific surface area. The structure of $TiO_2$ nanofibers indicates promising improved photocatalytic properties and these nanofibers can thus potentially be applied in air pollution sensors and pollutant removal filters. In this study, a $TiO_2$ nanofiber was fabricated by the electrospinning method. The fabrication processing factors such as the applied voltage, the distance between nozzle and collector, and the inflow rate of solution were controlled. The precursor was titanium (IV) isopropoxide and as-spun $TiO_2$ nanofibers were heated at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 h to obtain an anatase crystalline structure. The microstructure was analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The anatase phase was observed in the $TiO_2$ nanofibers after heat treatment. The diameter of $TiO_2$ nanofibers increased with the flow rate, but decreased with decreasing applied voltage and nozzle to collector distance. The diameter of $TiO_2$ nanofibers was controlled in the range of 364 nm to 660 nm. These nanofibers are expected to be very useful in photocatalytic applications.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a methodology for the classification of spatial patterns considering the parameters of urban form which play a significant role in the formation of the urban climate. The urban morphological parameters, i.e. building coverage, impervious pavement, vegetation, water, farmland and landuse types were used to classify the spatial patterns by a K-means cluster analysis. And the presented methodology was applied on Changwon city, South Korea. According to the results of cluster analysis, the total spatial patterns were classified as 24 patterns. First of all, The spatial patterns(A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, B-3, C-1, C-2, C-3, D-1, D-2, D-3, E-1, E-2, E-3, F-1, F-2, F-3, G-1, G-2, G-3), which distributed in the rural area and the suburban area, can have the positive impacts of cold air generation and wind corridor on an urban climate environment, were distributed in the rural area. On the other hand, the spatial patterns of the downtown area including A-4, B-4, C-4 and D-4 are expected to have the negative impacts on urban climate owing to the of artificial heat emission or the wind flow obstruction. Finally, it will require the future research to analysis the climatic properties according to the same spatial patterns by the field survey.

  • This research investigates the application of ZnO (zinc oxide) nanoparticles and $TiO_2$ (titanium dioxide) nanoparticles to polypropylene nonwoven fabrics via an electrospinning technique for the development of textile materials that can decompose harmful gases. To fabricate uniform ZnO nanocomposite fibers, two types of ZnO nanoparticles were applied. Colloidal $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were chosen to fabricate $TiO_2$ nano- composite fibers. ZnO/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and $TiO_2$/PVA nanocomposite fibers were electrospun under a variety of conditions that include various feed rates, electric voltages, and capillary diameters. The morphology of electrospun nanocomposite fibers was examined with a field-emission scanning electron micro- scope and a transmission electron microscope. Decomposition efficiency of gaseous materials (formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide) by nanocomposite fiber webs with 3wt% nano-particles (ZnO or $TiO_2$) and 7$g/m^2$ web area density was assessed. This study shows that ZnO nanoparticles in colloid were more suitable for fabricating nanocomposite fibers in which nanoparticles are evenly dispersed than in powder. A heat treatment was applied to water-soluble PVA nanofiber webs in order to stabilize the electrospun nanocomposite fibrous structure against dissolution in water. ZnO/PVA and $TiO_2$/PVA nanofiber webs exhibited a range of degradation efficiency for different types of gases. For nitrogen dioxide, the degradation efficiency was 92.2% for ZnO nanocomposite fiber web and 87% for $TiO_2$ nanocomposite fiber web after 20 hours of UV light irradiation. The results indicate that ZnO/PVA and $TiO_2$/PVA nano- composite fiber webs have possible uses in functional textiles that can decompose harmful gases.

  • In this study, fractured surface morphology and mechanical properties of Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with various contents of Mo for dental material use have been evaluated by mechanical test. The alloys used were Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys with Mo contents of 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt.%, prepared by using a vacuum arc-melting furnace. Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys were used for mechanical test without heat treatment. The phase and microstructure of alloys using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM) were evaluated. To examine the mechanical properties of alloys according to microstructure changes, the tensile test and the hardness test were carried out using tensile tester. To understand the mechanism of Mo addition to Ni-Cr alloy on mechanical property, the morphology and fractured surfaces of alloys were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). As a result, 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was verified that the tensile strength and the hardness were better than others. Varying Mo content, the changes of microstructures of alloys were identified by OM and SEM and that of 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was proved fabricated well. Microstructures of alloys were changed depending on Mo content ratio. It has been observed that 8% alloy had the most suitable mechanical property for dental alloy.

  • Degradation due to delamination occurs frequently in the high temperature superconductors (HTS) coil of rotating machines made with 2nd generation (2G) HTS wire, and the authors have observed other similar cases. Since an HTS field coil for a rotating machine is required to have stable current control and maintain a steady state, co-winding techniques for insulation material and epoxy resin for shape retention and heat transfer improvement are applied during coil fabrication. However, the most important limiting factor of this technique is delamination, which is known to be caused by the difference in thermal expansion between the epoxy resin and 2G HTS wire. Therefore, in this study, the experimental results of mixing the ratio of epoxy resin and alumina ($Al_2O3$) filler were applied to the fabrication of small and large test coils to solve the problem of degradation. For the verification of this scheme, eight prototypes of single pancake coils with different shapes were fabricated. They showed good results. The energization and operation maintenance tests of the stacked coils were carried out under liquid neon conditions similar to the operation temperature of an MW-class rotating machine. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the alumina powder mixed with epoxy resin in an appropriate ratio is an effective solution of de-lamination problem of 2G HTS coil.

  • The UTM-01 developed in 1998 was the first maglev vehicle in Korea for the urban transit maglev (UTM) system. Through the improvement of UTM-01 and development of UTM02, the commercialization of the UTM system is being prepared now. In order to prepare for the commercialization of maglev, it is necessary that an optimal design of the levitation magnet should be provided for the safe operation of the vehicle. The levitation force is formed through the function of magnetic flux density on the top of magnet poles and gap between magnet pole and guide rail. To generate a magnetic field that is high enough to levitate the vehicle, ferromagnetic materials, such as pure iron for magnet pole and SS400 for guide rail, were used. The heat generated by $I^2R$ loss of magnet conductor makes the thermal convection on the surface of magnet including coil and poles. As these two characteristics are nonlinear phenomena, this paper deals with the nonlinear analysis on the magnetic and thermal properties of the U-type levitation magnet by using 3-D finite element method (FEM). Base on the analysis results, a small scale U-type magnet was designed, manufactured, and tested and it was verified that the magnet manufactured was satisfactory to all the design specifications.

  • This paper presents derivation of background temperature from geostationary satellite and its validation based on ground measurements and Geographic Information System (GIS) for future use in weather and surface heat variability. This study only focuses on daily and monthly brightness temperature in 2012. From the analysis of COMS Meteorological Data Processing System (CMDPS) data, we have found an error in cloud distribution of model, which used as a background temperature field, and in examining the spatial homogeneity. Excessive cloudy pixels were reconstructed by statistical reanalysis based on consistency of temperature measurement. The derived Brightness temperature has correlation of 0.95, bias of 0.66 K and RMSE of 4.88 K with ground station measurements. The relation between brightness temperature and both elevation and vegetated land cover were highly anti-correlated during warm season and daytime, but marginally correlated during cold season and nighttime. This result suggests that time varying emissivity data is required to derive land surface temperature.

  • Pervaporation pilot tests for obtaining the anhydrous ethanol, which is an automobile fuel additive for reducing air pollution, were carried out in the production field of fermented ethanol by using a PVA composite membrane. In the pervaporation dehydration of the ethanol/water azeotropic mixture, the membrane performance is concluded to be enhanced with the heating temperature of feed. In the determination of the permeate condensation temperature from the viewpoint of energy cost, an Optimal temperature was found to be near $0{\circ}C$. The results on the dehydration of fermented ethanol were similar to those of synthetic ethanol, which indicates that the pervaporation performance is not influenced by impurities contained in the ethanol to be dehydrated. From a comparison of calculated energy needed in the system and measured value in the pilot test, it is confirmed that the latent heat for vaporization of permeant on the permeate side of membrane is supplied from the feed.

  • Steam generator is one of the major components of nuclear power plant and steam generator tubes are the pressure boundary between primary and secondary side, which makes them critical for nuclear safety. As the operating time of nuclear power plant increases, not only damage mechanisms but also scaled deposits on steam generator tubes are known to be problematic causing tube support flow hole blockage and heat fouling. The ability to assess the extent and location of scaled deposits on tubes became essential for management and maintenance of steam generator and eddy current bobbin data can be utilized to measure thickness of scale on tubes. In this paper, tube reference standards with various thickness of scaled deposit has been set up to provide information about the overall deposit condition of steam generator tubes, providing essential tool for steam generator management and maintenance to predict and prevent future damages. Also, methodology to automatically measure scale thickness on tubes has been developed and applied to field data to estimate overall scale amount.

  • Effect of heat (160, 190, and $220^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr) on coconut oil was examined by principal component analysis using electronic nose consisting of six metal oxide sensors. Increase in heating temperature decreased ratio of resistance and first principal component score (from +0.952 to -0.325), indicating rancidity of coconut oil increased at high heating temperature. Result of electronic nose based on GC with surface acoustic wave sensor showed significant changes in volatile profiles of coconut oil. High resolution olfactory imaging $(VaporPrint^{TM})$ was particularly useful for evaluating oil quality. Peak numbers and areas increased with increasing heating time and temperature (160, $220^{\circ}C$). Electronic nose analysis can provide simple, fast, and straightforward results and is best suited for quality control and process monitoring in flavor field of food industry.
