  • The first technological advance to improve the output and efficiency of the latest steam turbines operating in co-generation plants in Korea can be said to be progress in the field of materials that can use high-temperature, high-pressures steam. As a result of design efforts to improve the internal efficiency of steam turbines along with the development of materials, only a few manufacturers of steam turbine have produced high efficiency steam turbines. The internal efficiency of a steam turbine on the steam path operating for a long period of time is gradually lost owing to the limit of mechanical life, and efficiency and output decrease. Therefore, this study aims to develop a model that can analyze the steam flow path performance of HP (High Pressure) and IP (Intermediate Pressure) steam turbine for a co-generation plant using a commercial program and propose a performance calculation method. Owing to the complex performance calculation method of steam turbines, major variables are presented to serve as practically useful references for steam turbine practitioners. In addition, the thermal dynamic analysis(such as heat balance diagram calculation) and the the thermal dynamic calculation required for steam turbine performance calculation and the suitability of the steam turbine performance calculation results were compared with the performance test results.

  • Forest fuel management plays a crucial role in the proper management of frequent and large-scale forest fires worldwide. This study evaluated the impact of fuel management on reducing forest fire risk by through surface fire behavior through laboratory experiments and simulations using the Wildland Fire Dynamics Simulator. For Pinus densiflora litter, fuel conditions were established based on field surveys in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, focusing on control, 20% thinning, and 40% thinning sites. Results indicated that visible flame height, vertical temperature distribution, and maximum heat release rate tended to decrease with higher thinning intensity, implying a lower forest fire risk. Overall, the WFDS simulations produced higher values compared to the laboratory experiments, but the trends were similar. The results of this study can serve as fundamental data for evaluating forest fire risk based on thinning intensity and establishing a research foundation for fire prevention.

  • The $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ green emitting phosphor has been studied as a luminous device for CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) or FED (Field Emission Display) and EL (Electroluminescence). This phosphor, also, is under noticed for LED (Lighting Emitting Diode) phosphor, which makes use of excitation characteristics of long wavelength region. The $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was prepared generally conventional synthesis method using flux. However, this method needs high heat-treated temperature, long reaction time, complex process and harmful $H_2S$or $CS_2$ gas. In this works, therefore, we have synthesized $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ using SrS, $Ga_2S_3$, and EuS as starting materials, and the mixture gas of 5% H2/95% N2 was used to avoid the $H_2S$or $CS_2$. We investigated the luminescence characteristic of $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor prepared in various synthesis conditions, performed post-treatment and sieving process for application to LED.

  • The main purpose of this study was to estimate a new regression model to explain the relationship between urban forest and air temperature in summer, 2001. This study consists of two parts: correlation coefficient analysis and regression analysis. According to correlation coefficient analysis, thermal infra-red radiations of the major land use categories found significant difference in each category. However there were no significant relationship between the data (thermal infra-red radiation and NDVI) derived from Landsat-7 ETM+ image and air temperature at Automatic Weather Stations(AWSs). After estimating various regression models for summer air temperature, the final models were chosen. The final regression models consisted of two variables such as forest m and traffic facilities area. The regression models explained over 78% of the variability in air temperatures. The regression models with variables of forest area and traffic facilities area showed that the coefficient of the first variable was even more significant than the second one. However, the negative impact of the traffic facilities area was slightly greater than the positive impact of the forest area. Consequently, the effects of forest area and traffic facilities area were apparent to explain summer air temperature in Seoul. Therefore two policies have the most important implications to mitigate the summer air temperature in Seoul: to expand and to conserve the urban forest; and to change the Oafnc facilities'characteristics. The results from this study are expected to be useful not merely in informing the public that urban forest mitigates summer air temperahne, but in urging the necessity of budgets for trees and managing urban forests. It is recommended that field swey of summer air temperature be Performed for the vadidation of the models. • A study was carried out to improve the field implementation of asphalt surface reinforcement method which is a preventive maintenance. Mean Texture Depth (MTD) was measured to quantify the surface condition and used to determine the optimum application rate. Determining the application rate using MTD can reduce the material loss from 30% to 15%. In order to reduce the curing time to 30 minutes, the heat capacity of $317kcal/m^2$ is required. Therefore, the design capacity of the heating curing device requires more than 380,000 kcal/hr. The asphalt surface reinforcement method is preferably applied at a time when slight cracking occurs before the permanent deformation becomes serious. Through the analysis of the pavement survey data, it was decided to apply the surface reinforcement method at the crack rate of 3~4%. Heating the surface reinforcement agent to $50^{\circ}C$ improves workability and ensures sufficient penetration depth even at a crack width of 1 mm. The results will be utilized as basic data for the development of automated construction equipment for efficiency improvement.

  • To determine irrigated water temperature under the rice plant canopy, micrometeorological elements air temperature, relative humidity, water temperature, solar radiation, and the rice leaf area index the rice plant canopywere measured. Water temperature under the canopy was also estimated from these data. The results are as follows ; 1. Maximum and minimum temperatures of water in the paddy field were higher about $1-2^{\circ}C$ than those of air temperature. 2. Mean water temperature under the canopy became lower than mean air temperature when the leaf area indices were greater than 4, because of decreased light penetration rates 3. Penetration amounts of net radiation under the canopy can be estimated by an exponential equation 4. Estimated water temperatures under the canopy by a combination method model was adaptable in Suweon, a plain area, but its accuracy was lower in Jinbu, an alpine area.

  • We investigated the changes of fibrinolytic and antioxidative activities of wild or cultivated Codonopsis lanceolata, which were packed in woven polypropylene (WP) film or low density polyethylene (LDPE) film and stored for 0, 15, and 30 days at refrigerated $(2\~4^{\circ}C)$ or room $(l8\~20^{\circ}C)$ temperature (So we have 16 samples, and wrote them as the abbreviated words such as W-WP-RE-15, W-WP-RO-15, W-LDPE-RE-15, W-LDPE-RO-15, W-WP-RE-30, W-WP-RO-30, W-LDPE-RE-30, W-LDPE-RO-30, C-WP-RE-15, C-WP-RO-15, C-LDPE-RE-15, C-LDPE-RO-15, C-WP-RE-30, C-WP-RO-30, C-LDPE-RE-30, C-LDPE-RO-30). Fibrinolytic activity of fresh Codonopsis lanceolata cultivated in the mountain or field were 0.8 unit (plasmin unit/ml) or 7.3 units, respectively. In descending order, the activities of wild Codonopsis lanceolata stored for 15 days were as followed; LDPE-RE (0.70 unit), WP-RO (0.52 unit), WP-RE (0.45 unit), and LDPE-RO (0.30 unit). After 30 days, fibrinolytic activities of them decreased to 0.47 unit (LDPE-RE), 0.28 unit (WP-RO), 0.21 unit (WP-RE), and 0.30 unit (LDPE-RO). Considering from the point of fibrinolytic activity, the optimal storage condition of wild Codonopsis lanceolata was packing with LDPE film and storing at $4^{\circ}C$. The change of fibrinolytic activities of Codonopsis lanceolata cultivated in the field revealed the similar trend as wild samples, but the fibrinolytic activities of 30 days-stored samples were maintained better than the wild Codonopsis lanceolata. Fibinolytic activity of wild Codonopsis lancealata was increased by heating for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$ and decreased by addition of NaCl. Antioxidative activities of Codonopsis lanceolata were also compared from the electron donating activity. Fresh Codonopsis lanceolata had about $70\%$ of electron donating activity. Independent of cultivation area, electron donating activity dropped to $19\~74\%$ (wild Codonopsis lanceolata) and $27\~59\%$ (cultivated Codonopsis lanceolata) during 15 days storage. But after 30 days storage, we obtained the unexpected results, which meant that the activities were higher activities than 15 days-stored samples or even though the fresh samples. In general, Codonopsis lanceolata could maintain antioxidative activities most strongly with LDPE film and chilled condition.

  • In 1962 the governing bodies of FAO and WHO approved the establishment of a joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, the creation of a jointly sponsored body to be known as the Codex Alimentarius commission to implement the Programme. It can reasonably be claimed that the Commission has assumad the leading role in establishing internation food standards throughout the world. The Codex Committee of Food Hygiene has received much advice and assistance from other international organization which have been working in this field for a number of years. In particular, it has received valuable background documentation from the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods(ICMSF) which was set up by the International Association of Microbiological Societies(IAMS), and also from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Nevertheless, in spite of the information supplied by governments and research bodies in this field, microbiological standards have proved to be a highly controversial subject from the point of view of Codex standards. When it is decided to establish a microbiological standard for a food or class of foods, the following technical and administrative aspects must be considered: 1) The standard should be based on factual studies and serve one or more of the following objectives: (1) to determine the conditions of hygiene under which the food should be manufactured; (2) to minimize the hazards to public health; (3) to measure the keeping quality and storage potential of the food 2) The standard should be attainable under practicable operating and commercial conditions and should not entail the use of excessive heat treatment or the additions of extra preservatives. 3) The standard should be determined after investigation of the processing operation. 4) The standard should be as simple and inexpensive to administer as possible, the number of tests being kept to a minimum. 5) Details of methods to be used for sampling, examining and reporting should accompany all published microbiological standards. 6) In establishing tolerance levels for the permissible number of defective samples, allowance should be made for sampling and other variations due to differences in the laboratory methods. The following additional points should be kept in mind: 1) It is not satisfactory to establish one set of microbiological standards for a miscellaneous group of foods, such as“frozen foods”or“precooked foods”. 2) Microbiological standards should be applied first to the more hazardous types of food on the basis of experience of expected microbiological levels, taking into account variations in composition, processing procedures, and storage. 3) When a standard is established, there should be a definite relationship between the standard and the hazard against which it is meant to protect the public. 4) The sensitivity, reliability, and reproducibility of the sampling and analytical methods should be compared in different laboratories and the methods to be used should be specified in detail as part of the standard. 5) Tolerances should be included in the standard to account for inaccuracies of sampling and analysis. 6) Standards should be applied on a voluntary basis before compliance is made mandatory.

  • Recently, the eddy current testing(ECT), alternating current field testing, magnetic flux leakage testing and remote field testing have been used as a nondestructive evaluation method based on the electromagnetic induction phenomenon. The eddy current testing is now widely accepted as a NDE method for the heat exchanger tube in the electric power industry, chemical, shipbuilding, and military. The ECT system mainly consists of the synthesizer module, analog module, analog-to-digital converter, power supplier, and data acquisition and analysis program. In the previous study, the synthesizer module and the analog module which is essential to the ECT system were primarily developed, and in this study the data acquisition and analysis program were developed. The operation system for this program is based on the Windows 7, and optimized for the Korean users, and the specific feature of this program using setup wizard enables inspector to make a setup easily for acquisition and analysis of ECT data. In this paper, the configuration and functions of eddy current data acquisition and analysis program will be introduced.

  • In this study, adsorption isotherms of o-DCB(ortho-dichlorobenzene) on an activated carbon heated at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours were obtained by experiment and were predicted by using molecular simulation. The initial molecular structure of the activated carbon was designed on the basis of its molecular formula and functional groups ratio measured experimentally. Then, the molecular structure was optimized using the COMPASS(condensed-phase optimized molecular potentials for atomistic simulation studies) force field. The particle porosity, specific surface area, and particle density obtained from the optimized molecular structure of activated carbon were compared with those experimental data. The errors between experimental data and simulation results of the particle porosity, specific surface area, and particle density were shown as 7.6, 3.8, and 2.8%, respectively. Adsorption isotherms constants of o-DCB are calculated by the GCMC(grand canonical Monte Carlo) method in the optimized molecular structure of activated carbon. The simulation result of the adsorption isotherms showed an error of under 3%, compared to that of experimental data. Adsorption isotherms, adsorption heat and pore diffusivity of 2,3,7,8-TCDD(tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) was finally obtained in the same molecular structure of the activated carbon as used for o-DCB. Thus, adsorption characteristics of persistent organic pollutants on activated carbon, which are not easy to experimentally evaluate, are predicted by the molecular simulation.
