  • By thermal evaporation method, well-aligned ZnO nanowires were synthesized on sapphire substrate at $1000^{\circ}C$ with different oxygen flow rate by using pure ZnO powder (99.999 %). The as-synthesized ZnO nanowires were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The well-aligned nanowires are single crystalline in nature and perpendicularly grown along the c-axis. Also the growth rate of nanowires, such as diameter and length, had a tendency to increase as oxygen flow rate increased. Based on the PL measurement of ZnO nanowires, we found that the near band edge of emission redshifted with the increasing intensity of the defect-related green emission in proportion to the increase of oxygen flow rate. • For the application of field emission display (FED), it is essential to develop a carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode with high emission current density. In this study, we developed and demonstrated a post-heat treatment (PHT) process to improve field emission properties of CNT cathodes. Since the PHT is intended to burn out organic materials covering the CNTs, the PHT was carried out by heating samples at a high temperature in an atmosphere. The PHT process is applied for samples processed by surface treatment with an adhesive tape. Compared to samples prior to the PHT, samples after the PHT at $360^{\circ}C$ showed about 17% improvement in emission current density. The major reason for the increased current density is mainly the increased aspect ratio of the CNTs because of the removal of the adhesive organic residues covering the CNTs, which were attached on the CNT surfaces during the surface treatment using the adhesive taping method.

  • A study on the preparation of nickel oxide nanoparticles using electron beam irradiation is described. Nickel nanoparticles were synthesized with nickel chloride hexahydrate as a metal precursor and different sodium hydroxide concentrations using electron beam irradiation. The effects of sodium hydroxide concentration and electron beam absorbed doses were investigated. The samples were synthesized at different sodium hydroxide concentrations and with absorbed doses of 100 to 500 kGy at room temperature. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The nanoparticle morphologies seemed to be non-spherical and aggregated. The 1:1 molar ratio of nickel chloride hexahydrate and sodium hydroxide showed a higher purity and saturation magnetization value of 13.0 emu/g. The electron beam absorbed dose was increased with increasing nickel nanoparticle nucleation.

  • In general after the etching process, waste etching solution contains metals. (ex. Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Zinc (Zn), etc.) In this work, we proposed a recycling process for waste etching solution and refining from waste liquid contained nickel to make nickel metal nano powder. At first, the neutralization agent was experimentally selected through the hydrolysis of impurities such as iron by adjusting the pH. We selected sodium hydroxide solution as a neutralizing agent, and removed impurities such as iron by pH = 4. And then, metal ions (ex. Manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn), etc.) remain as impurities were refined by D2EHPA (Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid). The nickel powders were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method with hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The resulting nickel chloride solution and nickel metal powder has high purity ( > 99%). The purity of nickel chloride solution and nickel nano powders were measured by EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic) titration method with ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer). FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) was used to investigate the morphology, particle size and crystal structure of the nickel metal nano powder. The structural properties of the nickel nano powder were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy).

  • We investigated the oxide thickness and color evolution with the oxidation temperatures between $370^{\circ}C$ and $950^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in an electric furnace. Oxide thickness and color index were determined by cross sectional field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and digital camera images, respectively. We confirmed that thermal oxidation was suitable for the mass production of color-titanium products, while coloring process window was narrow compared with anodizing oxidation process.

  • Negatively charged functional organic molecules such as retinoic acid, ascorbic acid, indole acetic acid, citric acid, salicylic acid, acidic dye (indigo carmine, Food Blue 1) are intercalatively encapsulated by zinc basic salt (hydrozincite) and layered double hydroxide. Such functional organic-inorganic nanohybrids are realized via coprecipitation reaction involving simultaneous formation of layered inorganic lattice and intercalation of anionic species. The heterostructural nature of these nanohybrids, their particle morphology and textural characterizations are mainly discussed on the basis of Powder X-ray Diffraction and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy results.

  • Using RF plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, amorphous carbon films were grown in pure methane plasma. Field electron emission of these films were examined at a function of deposition temperature. It was found that the electron emission current of the sample prepared at deposition temperature above $600^{\circ}C$ was considerably improved. The film grown at deposition temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ had the best threshold field of 8 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ in this experiment. According to the results of Raman spectroscopy. growth of graphite crystallites was promoted with higher deposition temperatures. Moreover the surface morphology was abruptly changed at deposition temperature above $600^{\circ}C$. We discuss the field electron emission characteristics of amorphous carbon films with regard to the structural feature and surface morphology.

  • The emergence of new infectious diseases, the resurgence of several infections that appeared to have been controlled and the increase in bacterial resistance have created the necessity for studies directed towards the development of new antimicrobials. In the present study, we have synthesized a novel antioxidant ZnO nanoparticle that is newly designed and prepared by simple surface modification process. Antioxidative functionality is provided by the immobilization of antioxidant 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid (caffeic acid, CA) onto the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. Microstructure and physical properties of the ZnO@CA nanoparticles were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and steady state spectroscopic methods. Antimicrobial Activities of ZnO@CA nanoparticles were measured against various bacterial strains using antibacterial testing methods.

  • In this study, we report a novel antioxidant ZnO nanoparticle that is newly designed and prepared by simple surface modification process. Antioxidative functionality is provided by the immobilization of antioxidant of 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid (galic acid, GA) onto the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. Microstructure and physical properties of the ZnO@GA nanoparticles were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and steady state spectroscopic methods. The antioxidative activity of ZnO@GA was also evaluated using ABTS (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization assay. Notably, ZnO@GA showed strong antioxidative activity in spite of the conjugation process of GA on the ZnO surface. These results provide that GA-coating onto ZnO nanoparticles may offer an intriguing potential for biomedical devices as well as nanomaterials.
