  • An experimental study on effect of AC electric field on upwardly spreading flame over electrical wire, which is insulated by Polyethylene(PE), was conducted. The result showed that upwardly spreading flame leaned toward unburned side with angle of inclination. With applied electric field, size of upwardly spreading flame increased significantly. Flame spread rate showed various trends with inclination, applied voltage and frequency.

  • The electrical insulation design of high voltage superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) should be confirmed to be applied for the stabilization of the power grid. This paper describes numerical analysis and AC dielectric experiments for developing high voltage SFCLs. The electric field distributions between applied high voltage part and ground were calculated by finite element method (FEM) simulation tool and AC criterion of liquid nitrogen at 200 kPa was calculated from correlation between the field utilization factor and FEM simulation results. This paper deals with ceonceptual insulation design of a 154 kV class single-phase no-inductively wound solenoid type SFCL which was focused on gap distance between the cryostat and superconducting coils. Furthermore, the shield ring effect was confirmed to reduce maximum electric field at applied high voltage part.

  • In the course of the investigation to the field dependent electrical conducation mechanism in polypropylene, an abnormal conduction phenomena such as voltage controlled negative resistance charateristics has been observed at the junction of two regions charateriged by schottky effect and space charge effect respectively. This abnormal characteristics was observed initially about 110MV / m of the field strength and at 25 , however, the field strength where it observed was decreased and the apparent feature of negative charateristics was less pronounced as increasing ambient temperature. Although the observations of analogous characteristics in other materials such as polyethylene, polymethylemethactylate, and polystyrene have already been reported together with plausible explanation by Toureille and others, however, it was found that the proposed concept by those authors was little use to the present observations for quantitative discussions. Accordingly we tried to adapt another conceptual discussion based on Gibbons's formulation pertaing to the saturatio trend of the field dependent drift velocity of carriers towards the thermal velocity corresponding to the ambient temperature so that the quantitative explanatio on the observed facts has been succeeded to some estent of reasonable acceptance.

  • A FEM model of the remote-field eddy current effect is presented for zirconium-2.5percent niobium(Zr-2.5%Nb) nuclear reactor pressure tubes to demonstrate the important electromagnetic field. Phenomena that describe this effect. This model is applied to evaluate the optimal operating frequency and detector position. There are many ambiguous experimental results connected with this technique. Finite element calculations can be used in the interpretation of these experimental results even though the electromagnetic fields measured in the remote-field technique are very small.

  • The site effects of local geological conditions on seismic ground motion are performed using 2D numerical method. For the analysis, a numerical method far ground response analysis using FE-BE coupling method is developed. The total system is divided into two parts so called far field and near field. The far field is modeled by boundary element formulation using the multi-layered dynamic fundamental solution that satisfied radiational condition of wave. And this is coupled with near field modeled by finite elements. In order to verify the seismic response analysis, the results are compared with those of commercial code. As a result, it is shown that the developed method can be an efficient numerical method to solve the seismic response analysis of the site effect in 2D problem.

  • For increasing the yield stress of ER fluids, the compressing ER electrode was developed and the compressing electrorheological (ER) behavior of anhydrous ER fluids in silicone oil of phosphorous ester cellulose powder was investigated. Under constant electric field, not only the current density but also the yield stress of anhydrous ER fluids were studied as varying the compressing length of ER electrode distance. From the experimental results the compressing of ER electrode had a large influence to the ER properties of anhydrous ER fluids. The current density was proportional to the compressing length of ER electrode under constant electric field and volume fraction also tile compressing yield stress was proportional to the volume fraction of dispersed particles under constant electric field and compressing length. When the ER electrode was compressed with 150mm after charging the electric field, 4 kV, tile yield stress of phosphoric ester cellulose ER fluids increased to thirteen times comparing with the yield stress measured at normal electrode.

  • Effect of transverse electric fields on fracture behavior in ferroelectric ceramics under purely electrical loading is investigated. It is shown that the shape and size of the domain switching zone depend strongly on the ratio of the transverse electric field to the coercive electric field as well as the direction of the applied electric field. Under small-scale conditions, the crack-tip mode I and II stress intensity factors induced by ferroelectric domain switching are numerically obtained. The crack kinking in ferroelectric ceramics is also discussed.

  • MRE(Magneto-rheological Elastomer) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus in magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb broader frequency range of vibration. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particle (i.e., chain-like formation). Magnetic reactive powder(MRP), having rapid magnetic reaction, was selected as a magnetic particle to give magnetic field reactive modulus. The mechanical properties of manufactured MREs were measured with the application of magnetic field. The analysis of MR effect was carried out by FFT analyzer with various induced current. As induced magnetic field intensity increased and coated with MRP, increment of MR effect was observed.
