Investigation of Stiffness Characteristics of Subgrade Soils under Tracks Based on Stress and Strain Levels (응력 및 변형률 수준을 고려한 궤도 흙노반의 변형계수 특성 분석)

  • In this study, the so-called repeated plate load bearing test (RPBT) used to get $E_{v2}$ values in order to check the degree of compaction of subgrade, and to get design parameters for determining the thickness of the trackbed foundation, is investigated. The test procedure of the RPBT method is scrutinized in detail. $E_{v2}$ values obtained from the field were verified in order to check the reliability of the test data. The $E_{v2}$ values obtained from high-speed rail construction sites were compared to converted modulus values obtained from resonant column (RC) test results. For these tests, medium-size samples composed of the same soils from the field were used after analyzing stress and strain levels existing in the soil below the repeated loading plates. Finite element analyses, using the PLAXIS and ABAQUS programs, were performed in order to investigate the impact of the strain influence coefficient. This was done by getting newly computed $I_z$ to get the precise strain level predicted on the subgrade surface in the full track structure; under wheel loading. It was verified that it is necessary to use precise loading steps to construct nonlinear load-settlement curves from RPBT in order to get correct $E_{v2}$ values at the proper strain levels.

  • In soft ground, There are many case that Bridge Abutment is constructed after soil improvement in order to reduce the Negative Friction and prevent from Lateral Soil movements of Bridge Abutment. That section of Horizontal Subgrade Reaction $Modulus(K_h)$ derivation has much important mean due to Horizontal Stability of Abutment. It is come from behavior of Pile and Soil within depth of $1/\beta$. After Soil Improvement, however, If Bridge Abutment was construction, It's not impossible to carry out Field Investigation After Ground of Improved at design stage. Therefore, It's not able to derivate Horizontal Subgrade Reaction $Modulus(K_h)$. Therefore, in this case of study compare with Field Construction Test Data in order to derivation of Horizontal Subgrade Reaction $Modulus(K_h)$ and Reliability in terms of ground of Bridge Abutment by Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) during design of The 2nd Bridge Connection Road of Incheon International Airport. In this paper determine, Soil Property(The rate of strength increase, $c_u$ so on) and Horizontal Subgrade Reaction $Modulus(K_h)$ after soil improvement at design stage.

Behavior of Flexible Pipes with the Accelerated Flowable Backfill Materials Using Surplus Soil for Underground Power Utilities (굴착잔토를 재활용한 지중 전력케이블 유동성 뒷채움재 이용시 지중연성관의 거동특성)

  • In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM (controlled low strength materials) accelerated flow ability. CLSM has already been stage of commercial use in the foreign countries led by power company. In this study, we estimated the behavior of flexible pipe with flowable backfill materials and sand to compare on the DB24 load. The results showed that the deformation of flexible pipe is affected by types of backfill materials. CLSM shows better behavior characteristics than compacting sand. But numerical and analytical results that peformed to compare to the field test results showed big gap with the field results.

  • We aimed to assess the evolution of small-strain stiffness and relative density in non-compacted embankment layers. We developed embedded type in-situ soil stiffness measurement devices for monitoring small-strain stiffness occurring after filling at a test site and conducted comprehensive laboratory compaction tests using an oedometer cell with a bender element. However, direct comparison is extremely difficult because the shear wave velocity measured in the field and laboratory depend on depth and effective stress, respectively. Therefore, we propose a method for establishing a relationship between effective stress and depth using a compressibility model. In this study, the shear wave velocity measured in the field was compared to the estimated shear wave velocity-depth profiles for completely dry and saturated conditions with different relative densities. The relative density under saturated soil conditions may vary between 50% and 90% and tends to be closer to 95%. Under dry soil conditions, the relative density of the embankment can vary from 30% to 70% and tends to approach 76%. For model validation, the relative density estimated from shear wave velocity-depth profiles was compared to that estimated from DCPI data. In other words, the results analyzed in the context of an effective stress-depth model enable the prediction of engineering properties such as the small-strain stiffness and relative density of embankment layers. This study demonstrates that physics-based data analyses successfully capture the relative density of non-compacted embankment layers.

Evaluation of Construction Operation and Design Properties of CLSM for Corrugated Pipe in Underground (파형강관을 이용한 지하매설물용 뒤채움재 설계 및 시공성 평가)

  • During the construction of circular underground pipe, the non-proper compaction along the pipe and the decrease of compaction efficiency have been the main problems to induce the failure of underground pipe or facility. The use of CLSM (controlled low strength materials) should be one of the possible applications to overcome those problems. In this research, the full-scaled field test and the numeric analysis using PENTAGON-3D FEM program were carried out for three different cases on the change of backfill materials, including the common sand, the soil from construction site, and the CLSM. From the full-scaled test in field, the use of in-situ CLSM as backfill materials reduced the vertical and lateral deformation of the pipe, as well as the deformation of the ground surface. The main reason for reducing the deformation would be the characteristics of the CLSM, especially self-leveling and self-hardening properties. The measured earth pressure at the surround of the corrugated pipe using the CLSM backfills was the smaller than the other cases, and the absolute value was almost zero. Judging from the full-scaled field test and FEM analysis, the use of CLSM as backfill materials should be one of the best choices reducing the failure of the underground pipes.

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate engineering properties of Ferro Nickel Slag (FNS) and to investigate the effects of FNS on potential contamination of surrounding soil and water through small and large chamber tests. Soil conditions in the chamber tests were made as closely as possibile to the field conditions. In order to simulate different types of water, we used fresh water, acidic water and seawater. Sand soils were made with relative densities of 40% and 60%, and clay with the degree of compaction of 90%. After flushing water through the FNS in the chambers was completed, the PH test was performed for the water flowing out of the chambers and the soil samples were collected for soil pollution analysis. Based on the results of the chamber tests, although the pollution level was slightly higher in the silt than in the sand, the environmental effect that FNS causes the surrounding soil was found to be very minimal. This indicates that FNS can be used as construction material in place of natural aggregates.

  • The vertical soil pressure developed in the granular layer of asphalt pavement system is influenced by various factors, including the wheel load magnitude, the loading speed, and asphalt pavement temperature. This research observed the distribution of vertical soil pressure in pavement supporting layer by investigating measured data from soil pressure gage in the KHC Test Road. The existing specification of subbase and subgrade compaction was also evaluated with measured vertical pressure. The finite element analysis was conducted to verify the accuracy of results with measured data because it can maximize research capacity without significant field test. The test data was collected from A5, A7, A14, and A15 test sections at August, September, and November 2004 and August 2005. Those test sections and test data were selected because they had best quality. The size of influence area was evaluated and the vertical pressure variation was investigated with respect to load level, load speed, and pavement temperature. The lower speed, higher load level, and higher pavement temperature increased the vertical pressure and reduced the area of influence. The finite element result showed the similar trend of vertical pressure variation in comparison with measured data. The specification of compaction quality for subbase and subgrade is higher than the level of vertical pressure measured with truck load so that it should be lurker investigated.

A Study on the Engineering Characteristics of Power Plant Coal Ash (화력발전소 부산물인 석탄회의 공학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study characteristics for reclaimed ash was studied to enlarge the usage of reclaimed ash which is reaching to 72 million ton producted from whole thermal power plants in South Korea. Fly ash and bottom ash are reclaimed separately at some of thermal power plants. However, typically bottom ash and fly ash are mixed when they are buried at most of the thermal power plant, as a result the engineering characteristics of ponded ash are not investigated properly. In order to investigate the engineering characteristics of the ponded ash, laboratory tests were performed with ponded ash and fly ash from youngheung and samcheonpo thermal power plants. Specific gravity, unit weight, and grain size analysis test were fulfilled to evaluate the physical characteristics and triaxial permeability test, direct shear test, unconfined compressive strength test, compaction test were performed to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. And also engineering characteristics of coal ash from anthracite and Bituminous thermal power plants were compared and studied respectively. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that using coal ash from Bituminous thermal power plants can be effective in the place where lightweight materials are required and using coal ash from anthracite thermal power plants can be effective as backfill material which require higher permeability. Finally, it was confirmed that fly ash from youngheung thermal power plants which has the lowest permeability among the tested material is suitable for a field requiring impermeable material.

A Study on the Behaviour of Diaphragm Wall by the installation of CGS (CGS 시공으로 인한 지중연속벽체 거동에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the equivalent pressure acting on the face of drilled hole was determined by back analysis. This analysis was continued until the difference between the displacement directly measured during field test construction of CGS and the displacement evaluated by numerical analysis was below 10 percent, and the affect of diaphragm wall adjacent to grout bulb was evaluated by numerical analysis using the equivalent pressure. From the analysis results, it was observed that the increase of the pressure acting on the diaphragm wall was greater at reclaimed sandfill layer than silty clay layer during the installation of CGS. Two methods were adopted to reduce the pressure acting on the diaphragm wall. One is installing of trench between diaphragm wall and grout bulb, the other is pre-installing of CGS before construction of diaphragm wall. From the numerical analysis results, above two methods can be considered as an effective method to reduce the pressure. It was analyzed that the amount of reduction of the pressure and the displacement are 689.8% and 564.6%, respectively, in the case of adopting the trench method, and 463.7% and 214.0%, respectively, in the case of adopting pre-installing of 3 columns CGS.

A Study on the Behavior Characteristics of Soft Clay Ground by C.G.S Method (C.G.S공법을 적용한 연약점토지반에서의 거동특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study the pilot test of C.G.S (Compaction Grouting System) as injection method by low slump mortar was performed and the results were analyzed in order to find out the application of this method to the soft ground and the effect of settlement restraint. The site for pilot test is adjacent to apartments supported by pile foundations. Sand drain method was performed previously as countermeasures against settlement, but settlement occurs continuously because this ground is very soft. Site investigations such as SPT, CPT and vane shear test were performed to determine the characteristics of ground improvement after the installation of C.G.S. Field measurements were performed on purpose to find out the displacement of ground during the installation of C.G.S. From the results of this study, C.G.S method can be optimized by the control of radius, space, depth, injection material and injection pressure. C.G.S improves soft ground with radial consolidation of adjacent soft ground. Considering that increase of N value to about 3, C.G.S can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as constrain the settlement of soft ground. It is also expected to be economic and effective in the improvement of ground when it is used in applicable sites.
