A Study on Enhancing Subject Access to Fiction Focused on Symbol and Motif (소설 주제 접근체계의 확장 연구 - 상징과 모티프를 중심으로 -)

  • The access to literary works, including fictions, has focused on descriptive elements, and the subject access has been confined to denotative elements such as the subject matter, name of character and geographical name, etc, which appear in the work. This practice will not lead to the essence of subject of fiction, and does not reflect the demand of users for the subject who pursue aesthetic experience. In this study, concepts of symbol and motif and their possibility to be used as subject access point are considered to enhance a subject access scheme. In addition, this study tries to build the scheme of symbol and motif by using the glossary as the source of information. The composed schemes are applied to 20th century Korean fictions and its usability and limits are discussed.

An Investigation of Exposure to Informational Text through English Textbooks

  • This study investigated the extent of informational text genre appeared in English textbooks at grades six, seven, and nine. Employing content analysis to analyze the literary forms, the researcher identified genre in each reading selection of each English textbook and classified it into six categories - fiction, information, biography, poetry, play, or fantasy. Especially, informational genre was classified further into two subcategories - non-narrative and narrative - in order to investigate the extent of non-narrative informational text only. The text genre was examined by analyzing (a) the number of reading selections representing each genre and (b) the number of words in reading selections devoted to each genre. The most frequent type of genre at grade 6 and 7 was fiction with 94% and 71% respectively, whereas at grade 9 it was devoted to information (51%), followed by fiction (37%). The largest number of words was devoted to fiction with 96% at the sixth grade and 70% at the seventh grade; on the other hand, for grade 9, it was devoted to information (46%), followed by fiction (39%). Although there was variance across different publishers, the informational text genre gained more significance as the grade level increased. In particular, the percentage of reading selections and words devoted to the non-narrative or expository informational genre was overall 4% at grade 6, 17% at grade 7, and 44% at grade 9. The findings demonstrated the need to pay more attention to informational literacy especially in the early grades for the development of balanced genre knowledge.

  • One of the benefits of the internet-assisted instruction is that it can improve L2 Learners' motivation to express themselves in English. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an effective approach to British-American fiction learning in Korean universities, which can emphasize communicative strategies drawing on video-conferencing system, a chat system(CUSeeMe), and an e-mail system. Students are passive participants who cannot assert their creativity in the traditional teaching method of British-American fiction, which mainly relies upon reading and translation far from literature lessons. In CCDL(Cross-cultural distance learning) class, students can play active roles in asserting their own ideas and assuming considerable responsibility for making a presentation in English. A professor can play a role as a coordinator in supporting the students' activities and in winding up the class. The main significance of this article lies in providing a paradigm for CCDL class beyond the limitation of the traditional teaching method of British-American fiction in Korea and futhermore in exploring the eclectic integration of the traditional one and CCDL.

A Development and Application of Science Learning Material Including SF Movies (SF 영화를 활용한 과학학습자료 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of study is to develop the web-contents for web based instruction (WBI) with the Science Fiction Movie (SF) and investigate the effects of application to the science learning. The results are as follows. 1) Science fiction movies for the earth science classes of middle school were selected, that is the Armageddon, the Apollo13 and the Total Recall. They are related to the chapters, the Earth and the Stars in the 8th grade science textbook. 2) The developed WBI materials were applied to the science classes of the 2nd grade in middle school through the Internet Line. and then the changes of attitude on science and recognition on using the science fiction movies to the class were analyzed. The results show that the science fiction movies have so much related to the contents of science learning and the developed WBI materials are effective to the science classes(p<0.05), but no meaningful (p>0.05) to the attitude on the science excluding the students' interest to science learning.

  • This paper points out that the existing digital story creation tools are biased in the field of entertainment storytelling, so it proposes a specialized tool for non-fiction creation. This paper selects Quantifying Theory to design this tool. When creating nonfiction storyline, it is important to have the appropriate combination between the actual events and fictional elements. A Gossip System, based on Quantifying Theory, is suitable for that work. Before designing a Gossip System as a nonfiction creation tool, this analysis evaluated that the Gossip System in and . As a result, the linked structure in is useful in searching for material for non-fiction creation, and the separated structure in is ideal for arranging dramatic events. This paper proposed a method of switching the fact to fiction through a combination of this two Gossip System structure. I conclude that this is the best method for non-fiction creation tool.

The Meaning of Death for Korean in View of Novel and End Stage Cancer Patient

  • Every one experiences death one day, however no one can hows exactly what it is because people can not experience death until it comes, it is therefore impossible to judge correctly on the phenomenon of the death. On the whole, man experiences indirect death through the mass communications such as TV drama, fiction, magazine etc because those methods can easily access by every one. In addition to this, people usually acquire the negative awareness of death through the dramatic change of story like dying of cancer for dramatic effect by giving scare and fear to the cancers. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information on the spiritual care that enables the facing death patients to accept death as a part of life and divert hope from scare about after death by comparing and analyzing of two aspects of death meaning i.e, Korean fiction and the end stage cancer patients. Additionally, for medical staff to understand the facing death cancer patients by making to aware patients correctly and provide the better quality of care. The study was performed from September 28, 2002 to February, 28, 2003. The materials of this study were collected by direct data obtained from observation, interviews, note and diary of end stage of cancer patients and written materials acquired from Korean contemporary fiction. Participants of this study were 4 end stage cancer patients including 2 lung cancer patients, 1 liver cancer patient and 1 esophagus cancer patient. The methodology used in this study was divided into two types; Huberman & Miles methodology was used for fiction to find and categorize subject, and Colaizzi, one of phenomenological methodology was used for end stage cancer patients to find the major meaning, subject and categorization. Chinese author Yu Hua's prose ≪十個詞彙中的中國≫ non-fiction writing (중국 작가 위화의 산문 ≪십개사휘중적중국(十個詞彙中的中國)≫의 '비허구적 글쓰기')

  • The preface to the Korean version of ≪十個詞彙中的中國≫ is titled This means June 4, 1989, when the Tiananmen Square incident in China took place. It was cleverly called 'May 35' to avoid censorship by the Chinese government. The reason why the original ≪十個詞彙中的中國≫ is banned from publishing in China is because the book directly mentions the Tiananmen Square incident. On the contrary, it was published in the May 35 style of writing in spite of public opinion. Writing in the May 35 and June 4 style refers to writing in "fiction" and "non-fiction." For the past three decades, Yu-hwa has talked about the Chinese reality in love and hate amid the so-called fiction "false writing." And it is someone's admission that there was a keen spirit of criticism in the past. ≪十個詞彙中的中國≫ has an important meaning that Yu-hwa is no longer dependent on the framework of fiction, but is the first work to begin to express the desire to directly talk about.

  • This study is concerned with "fiction" as a new form of writing over the limits of the post-modernist theater/arts. Fiction is not something illusory that demands the audience's empathy but something that unveils form's disinterest in content. Thus, in this paper, I examine a fiction as the opposition of any representational norm and words' old mimesis. Rebutting the crisis of post-modern art and the end of images, philosopher Jacque $Ranci{\grave{e}}re$ mentions the possibility of appropriating similarity in an imitative way by twisting Platonic mimesis. The image of this similarity wanders alongside the loss of signification, unmasking the form's indifference to content. These wandering words represent their own truth "in a way fossils or grooved stones encapsulate histories" as hieroglyphics. This "fiction" as an alternative of post-modernist plays is not any confrontation of reality but the "movement of thinking" that allows the human spirit to play in a way of shaping "some substantiality." In this sense, I examines works by two French writers, $Jo{\ddot{e}}l$ Pommerat (1963~) and Jean-Claude Grumberg (1939~ ) who have carried out their writing practices of appropriating similarity that dissolves any simple "immediate reflection" for non-intermediate relations between the producing and the produced. Their writing is a cross of literary creation and "le politique" as a new aesthetic practice of writing and reveals the movement of thinking, departing from the preexisting concept of fiction.

Infection and Mutation - On the H. P. Lovecraft's fiction and "Project LC. RC" (감염과 변이 -H. P. 러브크래프트의 소설과 『Project LC. RC』에 대하여)

  • This article describes the fear of infection through the Covid19 pandemic and the rapid phase change of human species with H. P. Lovecraft's fiction and "Project LC. RC". Pandemic and climate change, which can be called global weirding, fundamentally question the status and history of human species in the ecosystem. The horror creature and cosmological indifferentism in Lovecraft's weird fiction are contemporary in that they help shed light on today's global weirding. But Lovecraft's racism allows him to ask more fundamental questions about the logjam of his cosmic horror. "Project LC. RC" are a Korean writers's works of cultural variation that rewrites controversial racism and misogyny in Lovecraft's fiction. Such variation becomes the task of creating a mutation in Lovecraft as it becomes infected with the affection of Lovecraft's writing. This article first noted the creative power of Lovecraft's fiction that induces such a mutation. And under this premise, this article wanted to reveal the meaning of Lee Seo young, Eun rim, and Kim Bo young's recreates of Lovecraft's fiction through the analysis of images and motifs of abject, plant creature and symbiosis. Specifically, Lovecraft's creature, which evokes phallic fear, turns into an image of an abject embracing and comforting women's despair("I Want You to Stay Low"), a plant creature that provides women with refuge("Color in the Well"), and a creature of care and symbiotic life("A Sea of Plague"). This recreate/rewriting has contemporary significance in that it embodies values such as labor, care, and solidarity in their works. The conclusion noted another power of creative variation in Lovecraft's fiction, which is not reduced to recreate/rewriting.

A Study of Simplifying Call Numbers with Collection Codes at Children's Libraries (컬렉션코드를 활용한 어린이도서관 청구기호 간략화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the collection codes and simplification of call numbers for children's easy access to the children's materials. The classification schemes, author tables, expansion of classification schemes, collections codes, classification numbers used in domestic and foreign children's libraries were surveyed through questionnaires and interviewing with librarians. As a result, in foreign children's libraries, it was common practice to shelve children's materials separately into various collections and sub-collections, to mark the spine with collection code and the lead characters of the author's last name, and not to stick with their classification scheme when it comes to highly circulated children's materials such as fiction, picture book, biographies and so on. Also, in domestic children's libraries, it was found that a collection code was used a few and each call number was almost assigned by KDC number. Therefore, it was suggested that the types and codes of collection and sub-collection were divided as non-fiction, fiction, fiction/mystery, fiction/science fiction, picture book, cartoon, language, folks and fairy tales, biographies, legend, concept book, holiday, award, dinosaur, insect, DIY, transportation, tall book, pop-up, story book, board book, reference, magazine, series, new book, video, and audio and were easily expanded by combining age tables or fiction genre. Also, new simplifying methods of building call numbers with collection codes were suggested.
