  • Background: Synovial sarcoma is a mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for around 10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. The diagnosis of synovial sarcoma can be a challenging task, particularly with small biopsy specimens. Aim: We investigated transducer-like enhancer of split 1 (TLE1), monoclonal antibody, expression by immunohistochemical analysis in a group of 74 synovial sarcoma cases, 20 cases of MPNST, 12 cases of neurofibroma, 15 cases of schwannoma, 5 cases of MFH, 10 cases of lieomyosarcoma and 10 cases of solitary fibrous tumor. Materials and Methods: Whole tissue sections were examined: (39 biphasic and 35 monophasic). Nuclear immunoreactivity was scored as negative (<5% of cells positive), 1+(mild /5-25%), 2+ (moderate/25-50%), and 3+ (strong >50%). Results: Overall, 71 (96%) of 74 synovial sarcomas were positive for TLE1, including 37 biphasic (95%) and 34 monophasic (97%) tumors. Other spindle cell tumors showed very low or absent staining of TLE1. Conclusions: We conclude that TLE1 is a sensitive marker and can be a useful diagnostic marker for synovial sarcoma, particularly the monophasic forms.

  • The objective of this study is to present an efficient measurement method of the effective thermal diffusivity for the fibrous insulation material. The non-linear parameter estimation (NPE) method is adapted for this analysis because of its accuracy and its results are compared with those by other direct methods such as CTP, CHP and STD method. A experimental system is constructed with bell-jar vaccum chamber, diffusion pump, tube type furnace, control unit and data acquisition system included with A/D converter and IBM XT/AT personal computer. The typical results obtained from this study are as follows; 1) NPE method can be recommended as an useful and accurate method to measure the effective thermal diffusivity of insuation material because it is shown that the measurement error compared with those by other direct methods is reduced for standard material, NBS-1450b. 2) NPE method can minimize the effects of ill-measured temperature due to external disturbance, because the final value is found by point to point estimating. 3) NPE method dose not depend on the kinds of heat flux, since the surfac temperature are used to estimate the thermal diffusivity. 4) With NPE method, compared with the steady state method, a measuring time and a sample size could be reduced.

  • CNFs had been well addressed due to numerous promising applications in science and technology. Besides the same physicochemical properties of ordinary carbon materials such as active carbons and carbon black, they exhibit specific, e.g., tubular or fibrous structures, a large surface area, high electrical conductivity stability, as well as extremely high mechanical strengh and modulus, which make them a superior material for electrochemical capacitors. In this study, CNFs were pretreated by mechanical milling with different time in mortar and pestle. The milled CNFs were used as active material of electrode whose electrochemical property was tested to find physicochemical characterization variation. CNF electrode milled for 5 min has the highest electric capacitance. XPS spectrum were employed to explore changes in functional group induced from mechanical milling. Crystal size was calculated to analyze change of peak from different milling time by XRD. The CNF milled for 5 min has the largest crystal size and the highest electric capacitance.

  • Statement of problem. Mechanisms of tissue-implant interaction and the effect of the implant surface on the behavior of cells has not yet been clarified. Purpose. This study was performed to investigate the tissue reaction to the titanium alloy submerged into rat peritoneum in vivo. Materials and methods. Titanium alloys (titanium-13Zirconium-6Niobium) were inserted inside the peritoneal cavity of Sprague Dawley rats. After 3 months, the tissue formed around the inserted titanium alloys were examined with a light-microscope. Tissue reaction around the material was analyzed by confocal microscopy to evaluate their biocompatibility in a living body. Results. In in vivo study, foreign body type multinucleated giant cells were found in the fibrous tissue formed as a reaction to the foreign material (4 in 20 cases), but the inflammatory reaction was very weak. After experiment, the contaminants of biomaterials was removed from living tissue. In confocal microscopy, we observed that the staining of vinculin and actin showed mixed appearance. In a few cases, we found that the staining of vinculin and beta-catenin showed the prominent appearance. Conclusion. We found that titanium-13Zirconium-6Niobium alloy was an excellent biomaterial.

  • Synovial cysts of the cervical spine, although they occur infrequently, may cause acute radiculopathy or myelopathy. Here, we report a case of a cervical synovial cyst presenting as acute myelopathy after manual stretching. A 68-year-old man presented with gait disturbance, decreased touch senses, and increased sensitivity to pain below T12 level. These symptoms developed after manual stretching 3 days prior. Computed tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1-cm, small multilocular cystic lesion in the spinal canal with cord compression at the C7-T1 level. We performed a left partial laminectomy of C7 and T1 using a posterior approach and completely removed the cystic mass. Histological examination of the resected mass revealed fibrous tissue fragments with amorphous materials and granulation tissue compatible with a synovial cyst. The patient's symptoms resolved after surgery. We describe a case of acute myelopathy caused by a cervical synovial cyst that was treated by surgical excision. Although cervical synovial cysts are often associated with degenerative facet joints, clinicians should be aware of the possibility that these cysts can cause acute neurologic symptoms.

  • The molecular areas and the interfacial tension behavior of ten nonionic surfactants, i.e., Span 20 and Tween 20, 40, 60. 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, & 85 are tested to assay their effects on the wetting and liquid retention properties of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fibrous materials. The molecular areas at water/air interface are derived from Gibbs’adsorption equations. The following conclusions are drawn from the results: 1) Span 20 is efficient in lowering the interfacial tension and effective in adsorption at the water/air interface, resulting in the low interfacial tension at critical micelle concentration (${\gamma}$$_{CMC}$) and a small molecular area($\omega$), 2) when the hydrophiles of the surfactants are constant, $\omega$’s increase as hydrophobe carbon numbers of the surfactants increase, 3) when the hydrophobes are constant, ${\gamma}$$_{CMC}$’s and $\omega$’s increase as the hydrophile ethylene oxide units increase, indicating effectiveness and efficiency is parallel in this case, 4) the ethylene oxide unit length as a hydrophile has greater influence on u than the hydrophobe chain length.han the hydrophobe chain length.gth.

  • Porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin films are fabricated by spin-coating using a dispersion solution containing PTFE powders, and their crystalline properties are investigated after thermal annealing at various temperatures ranging from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. Before thermal annealing, the film is densely packed and consists of many granular particles 200-300 nm in diameter. However, after thermal annealing, the film contains many voids and fibrous grains on the surface. In addition, the film thickness decreases after thermal annealing owing to evaporation of the surfactant, binder, and solvent composing the PTFE dispersion solution. The film thickness is systematically controlled from 2 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by decreasing the spin speed from 1,500 to 500 rpm. A triboelectric nanogenerator is fabricated by spin-coating PTFE thin films onto polished Cu foils, where they act as an active layer to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. A triboelectric nanogenerator consisting of a PTFE layer and Al metal foil pair shows typical output characteristics, exhibiting positive and negative peaks during applied strain and relief cycles due to charging and discharging of electrical charge carriers. Further, the voltage and current outputs increase with increasing strain cycle owing to accumulation of electrical charge carriers during charge-discharge.

  • Background and Objectives : Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue-tie, is the result of a short, fibrous lingual frenulum or highly attached geioglossus muscle. This condition may cause sucking and swallowing problems, articulation disorders, interference with the tongue's cleansing action, increased the potential for caries, and inability to lick the lips, play a wind instrument, and 'french kiss' Treatment is surgical procedure. In the most cases, horizontal sectioning and mucosal suture(the conventional procedure) is preferred, but in some cases, the Z-plastic procedure is effective. This study is aimed to compare the result of the two procedures. Materials and Methods : Twenty tongue-tie patients underwent operation. Ten patients were treated with the Z-plastic procedure and ten patients were treated with the conventional method randomly. We checked preoperative mobile tongue length, postoperative mobile tongue length, operation time and postoperative wound states. Results : Among the 20 cases of tongue-tie, 2 cases are excepted due to pre-operative state, thus we compared 18 cases of tongue-tie patients. There is no statistically significant difference between the two procedures except in operation time. The Z-plastic procedure apparently needs a little more operating time. Conclusion : Patients treated with the Z-plastic procedures appeared to have better outcomes, but the data shows no statistical significance except in operating time. Consequently, the Z-plastic procedure is indicated in a limited amount of cases.

  • Background and Objectives: The most common cause of the failure of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy is closure of the osteotomy site due to granulation or adhesion. We used mitomycin-C, an antineoplastic antibiotic agent, soaking over the osteotomy site to suppress fibrous proliferation and scar formation during the endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy. Materials and Methods : A total of 20 Patients diagnosed with nasolacrimal duct obstruction were assigned randomly to either a mitomycin-C group or a control group. Endoscopic dacryocystochinostnmy has been used in both groups. In the mitomycin-C group, a piece of merocel soaked with 0.2 mg/ml mitomycin-C was applied to the osteotomy site and then after 30 minutes was removed. Results : All patients in the mitomycin-C group remained symptom free after removal of their silicone tube (100% success), and there were two patients in the control group who had recurrent epiphora (67% success). In the mitomycin-C group, the average surface area of the osteotomy at the end of the sixth postoperative month was 4.1 $\textrm{mm}^2$, whereas that of the control group was 2.5 $\textrm{mm}^2$. Neither serious systemic nor local toxicity were noted in the mitomycin-C group. Conclusion : Intraoperative mitomycin-C may possibly improve success rates over the endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy procedure.
