  • The interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix affects the physical properties of fiber reinforced composites. In this study, 3-(Methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxy silane(MPS) coupling agent was used to increase the interfacial adhesion between polyketone fiber and epoxy resin. The change of surface chemical composition of polyketone fiber treated with MPS was analyzed using a FTIR-ATR. The interfacial bonding between fiber and resin increased with silane coupling agent largely. Consequently, interfacial shear strength(IFSS) was enhanced with increasing concentration of MPS coupling agent and thus, the physical properties of the composites such as flexural properties and dynamic mechanical properties were changed. Flexural strength and modulus increased when the MPS concentration was higher than 0.5wt%. The dynamic storage modulus of Polyketone/Epoxy composites treated with MPS was higher than that of the untreated one. When the MPS concentration of 3wt%, the highest storage modulus was obtained.

  • In a natural fiber-reinforced composite material, many studies have been devoted to improving the interfacial adhesion between natural fiber and polymer matrix and the composite properties through various fiber surface modifications. In the present study, waste wool-reinforced polypropylene matrix composites were fabricated by compression molding and their mechanical and impact properties were characterized. As a result, the tensile and flexural properties and the impact strength of waste wool/polypropylene composites strongly depended on the treatment medium, alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and silane treatment with 3-glycidylpropylsilane(GPS). The composite with waste wool by silane treatment exhibited higher mechanical properties and impact resistance than that by alkali treatment. The fracture surfaces of the composites support qualitatively the increased properties, showing the improved interfacial bonding between the waste wool and the polypropylene matrix.

  • In this study, natural fiber composites including flax fiber reinforcement was manufactured. It was tried to find optimum design of drill and machining factor for minimizing the damage during hole machining in natural fiber composites. Taguchi optimization was used for minimizing the number of experiments and evaluation of the effect of machining factor during hole machining in natural fiber composites. The experimental results indicate that the newly designed drill distributes cutting resistance well and minimizes surface roughness and produces fine surfaces. Developed new drill has been dispersed in the cutting resistance during processing, it was possible to obtain the smooth hole surface. Also, it was found that optimal rotational speed and feed rate of drill for hole machining.

  • Interfacial evaluation of the untreated and treated Jute and Hemp fibers reinforced different matrix polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymer (PP-MAPP) composites were investigated by micromechanical technique and dynamic contact angle measurement. For the statistical tensile strength of Jute and Hemp fibers, bimodal Weibull distribution was fitted better than the unimodal distribution. The acid-base parameter on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the natural fiber composites was characterized by calculating the work adhesion, $W_a$. The effect of alkaline, silane coupling agent on natural fibers were obtained with changing MAPP content in PP-MAPP matrices. Alkaline treated fibers made the surface energy to be higher due to removing the weak boundary layers and thus increasing surface area, whereas surface energy of silane treated Jute and Hemp fibers decreased due to blocked high energy sites. MAPP in the PP-MAPP matrix caused the surface energy to increase due to introduced acid-base sites. Microfailure modes of two natural fiber composites were observed clearly differently due to different tensile strength of natural fibers.

  • A theoretical prediction model of fiber bridging curve was established based on the assumption that fibers are uniformly distributed on the crack surface. However, the distance between fibers and their orientation with respect to crack surface can greatly affect the prediction of fiber bridging curve. Since, the shape of fiber bridging curve is a critical factor for predicting the tensile stress-strain relationship of ECC, it is expected that the assumption of uniform distribution of fiber may cause a significant error when predicting the tensile behavior of ECC. To overcome this shortcoming, a new prediction method of stress-strain relation of ECC is proposed based on the modified fiber bridging curve. Only effective fibers are taken into account considering the effects of their orientation and distance between them. Moreover, the approach for formulating the tensile stress-strain relation is discussed, where a procedure is presented for obtaining important parameters, such as the first crack strength, the peak stress, the displacement at peak stress, tensile strain capacity, and the crack spacing. Subsequent uniaxial tensile tests were performed to validate the proposed method. It was found that the predicted stress-strain relations obtained based on the proposed modified fiber bridging curve exhibited a good agreement with experimental results.

  • The recycled aggregate produced from the waste concrete have the disadvantages in the quality for the natural aggregate. Therefore, in order to reuse the recycled aggregate widely it is a previous subject to improve the quality of recycled aggregate. We deduced the more effective surface treatment method using the colloidal silica solution for quality improvement of recycled aggregate. This study aimed to verify the influences of the deduced surface treatment method and the reinforcement of steel fiber to the properties of concrete. For this object, we inquired into the results of the strengths and the flexural failure tests for the five kinds of concrete specimens.

  • The surfaces of henequen fibers, which can be obtained from the leaves of agave plants, were treated with two different media, tap water and sodium hydroxide, that underwent both soaking and ultrasonic methods for the fiber surface treatment. Various biocomposites were fabricated with untreated and treated, chopped henequen fibers and polypropylene using a compression molding method. The result is discussed in terms of interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and fracture surface observations of the biocomposites. The soaking (static method) and ultrasonic (dynamic method) treatments with tap water and sodium hydroxide at different concentrations and treatment times significantly influenced the interfacial, flexural and dynamic mechanical properties of henequen/polypropylene biocomposites. The alkali treatment was more effective than the water treatment in improving the interfacial and mechanical properties of randomly oriented, chopped henequen/PP bio-composites. In addition, the application of the ultrasonic method to each treatment was relatively more effective in increasing the properties than the soaking method, depending on the treatment medium and condition. The greatest improvement in the properties studied was achieved by ultrasonic alkalization of natural fibers, which was in agreement with the other results of interfacial shear strength, flexural strength and modulus, storage modulus, and fracture surfaces.

  • Because of the energy resources shortage and global pollution, the wind power systems have been developed consistently. Among the components of the wind power system, the rotor blades are the most important component. Generally it is made of GFRP material. Recently, GFRP material has been replaced by CFRP composite material in the blade which has an aerodynamic profile and twisted tip. However the failures has occurred in the trailing edge of the blade by the severe wind loading. Thus, tougher material than CFRP material is needed as like the aramid fiber. In this study, we investigated the mechanical behaviors of the blade using aramid fiber composites about wind speed variation. One-way FSI (fluid-structure interaction)analysis for the wind rotor blade was conducted. The structural analyses using the surface pressure loading resulted from wind flow field analysis were carried out. The results and analysis procedure in this paper can be utilized for the best strength design of the blade with aramid fiber composites.

  • Natural fiber henequen/unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were fabricated by means of a compression molding technique using chopped henequen fibers treated at various electron beam (EB) dosages. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal expansion behavior were investigated through a single fiber microbonding test, fractographic observation, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermomechanical analysis, respectively. The results indicated that the interfacial and dynamic mechanical properties significantly depended on the level of the EB treatment irradiated onto the henequen fiber surfaces. The effect of EB treatment on the IFSS, storage modulus and fracture surface of the henequen/UPE composites agreed with each other. The results of this study also suggested that the modification of henequen fiber surfaces at 10 kGy EB is the most effective for improving the interfacial properties of the henequen/UPE composites.
