This paper was aimed to investigate the shear strengthening effect of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet (CFS) & steel plate. Main test parameters were the magnitude of pre-loading at the time of the retrofit, the strengthening methods of carbon fiber sheet and aid ratio. A series of seventeen specimens was tested to evaluate the corresponding effect of each parameters such as maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, load-strain relationship and failure mode. As a result, using the steel plate can increase the capacity of not only shear but also bending moment.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate shear strengthening effects of R/C beams with carbon fiber sheets. The major variables are shear reinforcement ratios, CFS strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of CFS. Following conclusions can be extracted. The shear capacity of beam strengthened with CFS is about 32~87% higher than that of beams without shear reinforcement. The strengthening effects of patch type is larger than those of strip type. The strain distribution in CFS intersected with shear crack is similar to that in stirrup and larger strain is observed in the middle of the shear span. It can be estimated that shear strength reduction factor ${\alpha}$=0.3 is appropriate for peeling effect of CFS.

Strengthening of civil infrastructure with advanced composites have recently become one of the most popular methods. The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strips plates and fabric for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures has well established design guidelines and standards. Research on the application of FRP composites to steel structures compared to concrete structures is limited, especially for shear strengthening applications. Whereas, there is a need for cost-effective system that could be used to strengthen steel high-way bridge girders to cope with losses due to corrosion in addition to continuous demands for increasing traffic loads. In this study, a parametric finite element study is performed to investigate the effect of applying thick CFRP strips diagonally on webs of plate girders on the shear strength of end-web panels. The study focuses on illustrating the effect of several geometric parameters on nominal shear strength. Hence, a formula is developed to determine the enhancement of shear strength gained upon the application of CFRP strips.

The main purpose of this study is to develop a Sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing carbon or glass shot fibers and the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the Sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of Sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens which are changed with the combinations of various variables such as the length of shot fiber and mixture ratio of shot fiber and resin. These variables are set to have the material strength equal to one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon shot fibers were derived into 3.8cm, and the optimal mixture ratio was also deriver into 1:2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of Sprayed FRP to have the strength equal to one layer of FRP sheet was finally calculated.

The maximum drying shrinkage velocity was proposed to verify bulk and stiffness improvement mechanism during drying according to papermaking parameters. It was based on the wet-web shrinkage behavior without the restraint of wet-web during drying, so intact drying impact could be measured. Bulking agent reduced the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity, so paper bulk increased and paper strength decreased. When adding cationic starch to stock with the bulking agent for strengthening, the bulk was increased further with additional decreasing of the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. Paper strength also increased except tensile stiffness index with decreasing the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. When using additional strength additives for strengthening of fiber interfaces extended by bulking agent and cationic starch, amphoteric strength additive increased paper stiffness without loss of paper bulk. It was considered that the added amphoteric strength additives were cross-linked to the stretched cationic starch and this cross-linking increased elasticity of fiber-polymer-fiber interfaces without changing the drying behavior. Paper bulk could be increased with decreasing the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. The drying shrinkage of paper also could be controlled by fiber-to-fiber bonding interfaces by the bulking agent. In this case, paper strength including stiffness was decreased by reducing fiber-to-fiber bonding but it could be improved by strengthening fiber-to-fiber interfaces with polymer complex without loss of bulk.

Devastating RC structural failures in the past have identified that the behavior of beam-column joints is more critical and significantly governs the global structural response under seismic loading. The congestion of reinforcement at the beam-column joints with other constructional difficulties has escalated the attention required for strengthening RC beam-column joints. In this context, numerous studies have been carried out in the past, which mainly focused on jacketing the joints with different materials. However, there is no comparative study of different approaches used to strengthen RC beam-column joints, from efficiency and cost perspective. This paper presents a detailed investigation carried out to study the various strengthening schemes of exterior RC beam-column joints, viz., steel fiber reinforcement, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening, steel haunch strengthening, and confining joint reinforcement. The effectiveness of each scheme was evaluated experimentally. These specimens were tested under horizontal loading that produced opening moments on the joints and their behavior was studied with emphasis on strength, displacement ductility, stiffness, and failure mechanism. Special attention was given to the study of crack-width.

In discontinuous composite mechanics, shear lag theory is one of the most popular model because of its simplicity and accuracy. However, it does not provide sufficiently accurate strengthening predictions in elastic regime when the fiber aspect ratio is small. This is due to its neglect of stress transfer across the fiber ends and the stress concentrations that exist in the matrix regions near the fiber ends. To overcome this shortcoming, a more simplified shear lag model introducing the stress concentration factor which is a major function of modulus ratio is proposed. It is found that the proposed model gives a good agreement with finite element results and has the capability to correctly predict the values of intefacial shear stresses and local stress variations in the small fiber aspect ratio regime.

As increasing number of large-size earthquake around Korean peninsula, many interests have been focused to the earthquake strengthening of existing structures. Fiber reinforced plastic composite material is one of strengthening material widely used to increase seismic performance of structures. It should have high stiffness as well as large ductility to provide best strengthening result. Thus selection of stiffener and fiber in composite is of important. In this study, the optimal combination of fiber and stiffener is selected with variety of tensile tests. In order to investigate performance of chosen composite material, several finite element analyses are performed with proposed FRP composite material for existing RC columns. It is discussed that the seismic performance of strengthened columns through the load-displacement relationship. It is shown that the proposed composite material can increase the strength as well as ductility of exiting RC columns.
Flexural characteristics of the R.C beams strengthened with newly-developed grid-type carbon fiber plastics(CFRP-GRIDS) were investigated. The tests were conducted under the four-points load to the failure to investigate the strengthening effects of CFRP-GRIDS on the beams. Results showed that initial cracks appeared in the boundary layers of fibers embedded in the newly-placed mortar concrete slowly progressed to the direction of supports and showed fracture of fiber plastics and brittle failure of concrete in compression in sequence after the yielding of steel reinforcement. Accordingly, the appropriate area of Grid-type carbon-fiber plastics in the strengthening design of deteriorated RC structures should be limited and given based on the ultimate strength design method to avoid the brittle failure of concrete structures.
This study presents test results of RC beams strengthened by steel plates, carbon fiber sheets(CFS) and aramid fiber sheets(AFS) for increasing flexural and shear resistance. The test was performed with different parameters including the type of strengthening materials, flexural-strengthening methods and shear-strengthening methods. In case of flexural test, RC beams are initially loaded to 70% of the ultimate flexural capacity and in case of shear test loaded to 60 or 80 percent of the ultimate shear capacity and subsequently reinforced with steel plates, CFS and AFS. Experimental data on strength, steel strain, deflection, and mode of failure of the reinforced beams were obtained, and comparisons between the different shear reinforced schemes and the non-strengthened control beams were made. The test results showed that damaged RC beams strengthened by steel plates, CFS and AFS have more improved the flexural and shear capacity. For the beams with external reinforcement by steel plates, aramid fiber sheets and carbon fiber sheets increases in ultimate strength of 4 to 21, 17 to 43 and 26 to 36 percent were respectively achieved. Initial load had small effect on strength after reinforcement, but an important influence on deflection. One sheet reinforced was stronger than two sheets reinforced but less deflected than two sheets reinforced.
