광섬유 TR-EFPI(total reflected extrtinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric) 센서가 빌딩, 교량, 항공기 등의 구조물의 변형률을 측정하기 위하여 개발되어졌다.
The intensity modulated type (reflective method) optical fiber sensor is a well -known method and widely applied to the displacement measurements and other industrial purposes. This type sensor has the advantages of relatively cheap cost, small sensor size and easiness of operation. The sensitivity of the sensor is very dependent of several error terms; the variation in the intensity of the light source and the changes in the surface reflectivity of the object. An optical fiber coupled displacement probe with a new compensation method is presented in this paper. The proposed displacement sensor can measure the displacements of the target surface independent of surface reflectivity error that is caused by the materials and surface processing grade.
Novel concept of sensor mat and its signal processing method is proposed for patient monitoring in medical application. Proposed sensor mat structure has sensing inner layer which has cross-linked arrangement using plastic optical fiber(POF). Large core diameter of plastic optical fiber behaved as band pass filter by averaging the noise component. caused by unwanted environmental factors. Signal processor followed by sensor output added noise immune performance by filtering out unwanted component. Fail-proof patient breath monitoring scheme was realized by using intelligent decision algorithm. Unlike the conventional approach by using mechanical sensor, which have high sensitivity both to intruder and to environmental noise, our approach provided reliable breath motion detection.
In this paper, a study on a portable hydrogen alarm system based on the palladium coated single mode fiber sensor has been reported. The fabricated hydrogen sensor exhibited 0.14 dB, 0.41 dB and 0.54 dB optical intensity variation when it was exposed by the nitrogen and hydrogen mixed gas containing 0.5 %, 1 % and 4 % of the hydrogen concentration, respectively. The fabricated sensor exhibited 20 second of response time and 120 second of recovery time for 4 % hydrogen containing gas. The fiber optics layout and software algorithm for detection of hydrogen leakage have been presented. The implanted portable hydrogen alarm system successfully generated an alarm signal when a 4 % hydrogen containing gas was leaked out.
A novel cure sensor based on the side-polished single mode fiber has been proposed and demonstrated. Two different UV curable epoxies were used to verify the feasibility of the side-polished single mode fiber as a high sensitivity cure sensor. The volume change of the epoxy by UV curing results in a corresponding change of the refractive index. The sensor can be used to monitor the curing process, the refractive index variation and the volume change of epoxy in real time during the UV curing process. In addition, small birefringence of the epoxy film can be detected using the sensor.
In this study, a plastic fiber-optic temperature sensor is fabricated using TSCM(thermo sensitive clouding material) which changes its light transmittance with temperature and the characteristics of this sensor are evaluated. The fabricated fiber optic temperature sensor is the reflector type using a Y-coupler. The optimum light source and reflector are decided by measuring the amount of reflected light through TSCM. Also, the optimum distance from the end of sensor to the surface of reflector is determined. Then the relationship between the amount of measured reflected light and the temperature of TSCM is found.

Optical fiber temperature sensing systems have incomparable advantages over traditional electrical-cable-based monitoring systems. However, the fiber optic interrogators and sensors have often been rejected as a temperature monitoring technology in real-world industrial applications because of high cost and over-specification. This study proposes a multiplexed fiber optic temperature monitoring sensor system using an economical Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and Hard-Polymer-Clad Fiber (HPCF). HPCF is a special optical fiber in which a hard polymer cladding made of fluoroacrylate acts as a protective coating for an inner silica core. An OTDR is an optical loss measurement system that provides optical loss and event distance measurement in real time. A temperature sensor array with the five sensor nodes at 10-m interval was economically and quickly made by locally stripping HPCF clad through photo-thermal and photo-chemical processes using a continuous/pulse hybrid-mode laser. The exposed cores created backscattering signals in the OTDR attenuation trace. It was demonstrated that the backscattering peaks were independently sensitive to temperature variation. Since the 1.5-mm-long exposed core showed a 5-m-wide backscattering peak, the OTDR with a spatial resolution of 40 mm allows for making a sensor node at every 5 m for independent multiplexing. The performance of the sensor node included an operating range of up to $120^{\circ}C$, a resolution of $0.59^{\circ}C$, and a temperature sensitivity of $-0.00967dB/^{\circ}C$. Temperature monitoring errors in the environment tests stood at $0.76^{\circ}C$ and $0.36^{\circ}C$ under the temperature variation of the unstrapped fiber region and the vibration of the sensor node. The small sensitivities to the environment and the economic feasibility of the highly multiplexed HPCF temperature monitoring sensor system will be important advantages for use as system-integrated temperature sensors.

A long-distance remote sensing of temperature and current based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The thermal expanding effect of the epoxy and the Er-doped fiber ring laser (EFRL) are applied to the sensor system to enhance the temperature and current sensitivity. An EFRL with a 5 km-single-mode fiber and a FBG shows a high extinction ratio of more than 60 dB and a low power fluctuation of less than 1 dB. The metal wires are used to supply the current to the sensors. When the NOA65 puts on the FBG as a thermal expanding material, the temperature and current sensitivity of the lasing wavelength shift are about $30\;pm/^{\circ}C$ and 3pm/mA, respectively. The proposed sensing scheme is useful for measurement of current or temperature at a distant object of more than several km.
