  • In this paper, a sensitivity of the fiber optic pressure sensor in water is demonstrated. A single mode optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer used to detect the change in optical path length produced by the change of fiber optic strain in water. The sensitivity with this system measured 100.mu.psia through an experiment in the static response.

  • The V-grooved single-mode fiber in which a surface part of the core was removed was investigated as a quasi-distributed water detection sensor. In the normal state, the V-grooved region is filled and covered with a specific RI (Refractive Index)-matched medium, and the sensor experiences minimal optical loss. As water invades the V-grooved region, the material is dissolved and removed, and a considerable optical loss occurs owing to the large RI difference between the fiber core and water. The experimental results showed the feasibility of the device as a sensor element of the quasi-distributed water detection sensor system based on general optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR).

  • A fiber Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor for the measurement of current flowing into a small fuse have been studied. The proposed current sensor was fabricated with a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer attached close to a fuse line inside a small fuse. The fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer used in the experiment had the 10 mm cavity length and the 3.5 % reflectance mirrors. The phase shift of the output signal of the current sensor was proportional to the square of current applied to the fuse and the sensitivity of the current sensor was 0.87 degree/$mA^{2}$. The experiment results show that this sensor can be used for measuring current flowing into the fuse.

  • In this study, we propose a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor using a polarization-diversity loop configuration composed of a polarization beam splitter, two quarter-wave plates, and a polarization-maintaining fiber coated with palladium whose thickness is ~400nm. One transmission dip of the output interference spectrum of the proposed sensor, chosen as a sensor indicator, was observed to spectrally shift with the increase of the hydrogen concentration, and the sensing indicator showed a wavelength shift of ~2.48nm at a hydrogen concentration of 4%. Except for a hydrogen concentration of 4%, the response time of the proposed sensor was measured as less than 12.5s and did not show significant dependence on the hydrogen concentration. In particular, the proposed fiber hydrogen sensor is more durable and highly resistant to external stress applied on a transverse axis of an optical fiber, compared with other hydrogen sensors based on side-polished fibers or fiber gratings.

  • In this study, we have fabricated an infrared optical fiber based sensor which can monitor the respiration of a patient. The design of a chalcogenide optical fiber based sensor is suitable for insertion into a high electro-magnetic field environment because the sensor consists of low cost and compact mid-infrared components such as an infrared light source, a chalcogenide optical fiber and a thermopile sensor. A fiber-optic respiration sensor is capable of detecting carbon dioxide ($CO_{2}$) in exhalation of a patient using the infrared absorption characteristics of carbon gases. The modulated infrared radiation due to the presence of carbon dioxide is guided to the thermopile sensor via a chalcogenide receiving fiber. It is expected that a mid-infrared fiber-optic respiration sensor which can be developed based on the results of this study would be highly suitable for respiration measurements of a patient during the procedure of an MRI.

  • PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excimer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To discover the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurements. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain. This PMFBG sensor is useful for the structures that require measuring transverse stram.

  • Five expensive sensors are necessary to control a magnetic bearing system. The sensor price rate of magnetic bearing system is high. So it is necessary that cheap and good sensor is developed. The optical fiber displacement sensor is adaptive to satisfy this condition. We can design magnetically suspended spindle based on static characteristic of optical fiber displacement sensor developed. The controller can be designed by decoupled feedback PD. Therefore, it is simpler than any other controller comparatively.

  • Two types of fiber-optic sensors, EFPI(extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer) and FBG(fiber Bragg grating), have been investigated for measurement of thermal strain and temperature. The EFPI sensor is only for measurement of thermal strain and the FBG sensor is for simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. FBG temperature sensor was developed to measure strain-independent temperature. This sensor configuration consists of a single-fiber Bragg grating and capillary tube which makes it isolated from external strain. This sensor can then be used to compensate for the temperature cross sensitivity of a FBG strain sensor. These sensors are demonstrated by embedding them into a graphite/epoxy composite plate and by attaching them on aluminum rod and unsymmetric graphitelepoxy composite plate. All the tests were conducted in a thermal chamber with the temperature range $20-100^{\circ}C$. Results of strain measurements by fiber-optic sensors are compared with that from conventional resistive foil gauge attached on the surface.

  • We improved an efficiency of fiber-optic current transformer by using a metal-coated sensor coil. To reduce the linear birefringence, we used a length of spun fiber as sensor coil, and then used a flint glass fiber coil for comparison. To make the sensor coil in the reflection type, we used different reflection mirrors at the end of the sensor coil, such as a Faraday rotator mirror, a simple mirror, a metal-coated fiber end and a simple fiber end. From the experimental results, the linear error of current measurements were less than ${\sim}$ 0.2 % regardless of the mirror types. The metal-coated sensor was the most cost-effective considering the fabrication cost and the simple structure.

  • FBG sensor peaks could be split due to polarization by shear strain, when the fiber optic sensors embedded or attached to the structure. For the fiber optic sensor packages, sensor grating has to be protected from shear strains. Also, pretension has to be applied to the sensor because compressive strain must be measured. Without pretension of sensor, the sensor does not show any change of signal until it is stretched. In order to mesure compressive and tensile strains, two fixing point and prestressed sensor need. In the fixing point, just holding the optical fiber cause slip between core and cladding in the fiber. A Fixation method of prestressed FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor package has the prestress controllable fixtures at the fixing points. Prestress to the sensor imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts make it easy to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The fiber optic sensor packages applied to the actual structure and the structural monitoring system using the package can be applied to safety through surveillance.
