  • This paper describes a multiplexed-multivariate fiber-optic interferometric sensor system with remote sensing capability. Signal processor of the implemented sensor system is designed as a digital fringe counter that is well adapted to the signal processing of the remote fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor array. By summing up the reported optical data of the optical fiber, a guideline for choosing the optical effect suitable for a specific measurand is presented. As an example, a pressure sensing device that utilizes the strain-optic effect of the optical fiber by attaching it onto a stainless steel diaphragm of which diameter is 4.3 cm, is built and attached to the sensor system. The changes in optical phase difference of the fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric press ure sensor while filling a water tank 2 meters high, was counted by the half-fringe counting signal processor. Test results showed that the measurement error is less than ${\pm}3.6\;cm$ over the measured range of 2 meters.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.

  • In order to apply FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) sensor as one of reliable sensors in the commercial railway structure, the reliability of FBG sensor in the mechanical strength viewpoint have to be confirmed and the maximum strain should surpass the fracture strain of the host structure to measure the measurands until the host structures fail. In this paper, several factors that influence the mechanical failure strength of fiber Bragg grating sensors were analyzed. A set-up for dynamic tensile testing of optical glass fibers with fiber Bragg gratings was made. To increase the FBG failure strength, techniques relying on the H2 loading treatment and stripping methods were established and testified as a result of the tensile strength test of optical fibers.

  • In this paper, temperature-induced optical phase shifts in single-mode fibers are studied both analytically and experimentally. Temperature sensor using single-mode fiber interferometer is designed and the temperature sensitivity of the sensor system is investigated. This fiber-optic temperature sensor which employs the Mach-Zehnder arrangement is a high sensitivity sensor of phase detection type. In this type, temperature changes are ob-served as a motion of an optical interference fringe pattern. In the measurements using interferometer, one of the important problems is to detect simultaneously the number and direction of fringe displacement resulting from physical perturbations (temperature, pressure, etc.). To realize this, the array detector using multi-mode fiber is designed. By this array detector the number and direction of fringe displacement is Ineasured very conveniently.

  • A method for measurement and monitoring of mechanical loads in large slender structures such as wind turbine blade and tower is presented based on continuous strain data obtained from distributed fiber optic sensor. An experimental study was carried out on an aluminum cantilever beam. A static load test was performed and the calculated moment from the distributed fiber optic sensor agree well with the actual applied moment. A series of damages was inflicted on the beam, and vibration tests were carried out for each damage case. The estimated natural frequencies from the distributed fiber optic sensor for each damage case are found to compare well with those from a conventional accelerometer and a numerical analysis based on an energy method.

  • The feasibility of producing a practical buried fiber optic sensor with high sensitivity for detecting intruders is demonstrated. Experiments were carried out with the use of an all fiber Michelson interferometer, the sensing arm of which was buried in sand. When the sensing arm was buried 8 inches deep in sand, the pressure length product required for a half fringe shift in: the sensor output was $1.09\;kPa{\cdot}m$. The relation between the applied weight and the phase change was almost linear. Experimental results indicated that the sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor was sufficient to detect people on foot and vehicles passing over the buried fiber.

  • Optical fiber sensors have shown a potential to serve real time health monitoring of the structures. They can be easily embedded or attached to the structures and are not affected by the electro-magnetic field. Furthermore, they have the flexibility of the sensor size and very highly sensitive. In this study, we conducted several laboratory and field tests using a novel optical sensor based on Brillouin scattering. One of the advantages of this technique is that the bare fiber itself acts as sensing element without any special fiber processing or preparation. Test results have shown that BOTDR can be a great solution for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures.

  • The characteristics of a photonic crystal fiber sensor with reuleaux triangle are studied by using the finite element method. The wavelength sensitivity of the designed optical fiber sensor is related to the arc radius of the reuleaux triangle. Whether the core area is solid or liquid as well as the refractive index of the liquid core contributes to wavelength sensitivity. The simulation results show that larger arc radius leads to higher sensitivity. The sensitivity can be improved by introducing a liquid core, and higher wavelength sensitivity can be achieved with a lower refractive index liquid core. In addition, the specific channel plated with gold film is polished and then analyte is deposited on the film surface, in which case the position of the resonance peak is the same as that of the complete photonic crystal fiber with three analyte channels being filled with analyte. This means that filling process becomes convenient with equivalent performance of designed sensor. The maximum wavelength sensitivity of the sensor is 10200 nm/RIU and the resolution is $9.8{\times}10^{-6}RIU$.

  • In this study a fiber optic biosensor has been developed to on-line monitor the concentrations of oxygen and glucose. The oxygen concentrations in solution and gas phase monitored by the fiber optic sensor has been compared with those by a dissolved oxygen electrode and an IR-type $O_2$ analyzer. The fiber optic glucose sensor has been made by immobilizing glucose oxidase on the tip of the optic fiber and used to on-line monitor the concentration of glucose in a fermentation process.
