  • This paper reports on a comprehensive study on the mechanical properties of expansive fiber-reinforced strainhardening cement composite (SHCC) materials containing various replacement levels (0, 8, 10, 12 and 14%) of an expansive admixture and 1.5% polyethylene (PE) fibers volume fraction. A number of experimental tests were conducted to investigate shrinkage, compressive strength, flexural strength, and direct tension behavior. Test results show that as expected, the different replacement levels of an expansive admixture have an important effect on the evolution of the free shrinkage of SHCC with a rich mixture. At the volume fraction of 1.5%, PE fibers in normal SHCC reduce free shrinkage deformation by about 30% in comparison to plain mortar. The replacement of an expansive admixture in SHCC material has led the SHCC to a better initial cracking behavior. Enhanced cracking tendency improved mechanical properties of SHCC materials with rich mixtures. Note that an increase in the replacement of expansive admixture from 10% to 14% does not lead to a significant improvement for mechanical properties; this implies that the replacement of 10% expansive admixture is sufficient.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have proved to be reliable as strengthening materials. Most of existing studies used single types of FRP composites. Therefore, in this experimental study, carbon FRP sheet, aramid FRP sheet, and hybrid FRP plate including glass fibers were fabricated, and the effect of pre-stressed FRP composites on flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams was investigated. In total, eight RC beam specimens were fabricated, including one control beam (specimen N) without FRP composites and seven FRP-strengthened beams. The main parameters were type of FRP composite, the number of anchors used for pre-stressing, and thickness of FRP plates. As a result, the beam strengthened with pre-stressed FRP plate showed superior performance to the non-strengthened one in terms of initial strength, strength and stiffness at yielding, and ultimate strength. As the number of anchors and thickness of FRP plate (i.e., amount of FRP plates) increased, the strengthening effect increased as well. When hybrid FRP plates were pre-stressed, the strengthening effect was higher in comparison with pre-stressed single type FRP plate.

  • As the amount of polycarboxylate superplasticizer varied from 1.2% to 3.0% of the mass of binder, the change in the flowability & rheological properties, and strength of UHPFRC was investigated with experiments. The test results presented that the increase in the amount of superplasticizer was effective in improving the flowability up to 1.8%, but addition more than 1.8% was hardly beneficial for enhancing the flowability and rhelogical properties. Compressive strengths with different amounts of superplasticizer showed that the strength with 1.8% was slightly higher than that of 1.2%, but the amount more than 1.8% caused strength reduction, which was higher as the amount increased. The results in flexural strength according to the amount of superplasticizer showed a similar trend with the results in compressive strength. When the effect of compressive strength and fiber distribution characteristics on the flexural strength was analysed separately, it was found that high amount of superplasticizer caused an effect of fiber distribution in addition to the effect of compressive strength on flexural strength. This effect seems to be closely related to the results of flowability or rheological properties.

  • Recently, earthquakes have frequently occurred near Korean peninsula. An experimental study is needed for developing a reinforcing method for seismic strengthening to apply to RC structures. Recently, PolyUrea (PU) as structural reinforcement materials has been receiving great interest from construction industry. The reinforcing effect of PU appeared to be excellent under blast and impact as well as earthquakes. In this study, Flexible Type PolyUrea (FTPU) developed in preceding studies was modified to develop Stiff Type PolyUrea (STPU) by varying the ratio of the components of prepolymer and hardener of FTPU. The material performance evaluation has been performed through hardening time, tensile strength and percent elongation test, pull-off test, and shore hardness test. The experimental results showed that STPU has higher tensile strength and lower elongation than FTPU. Therefore, STPU coating agent can be used for semi-permanent products. By using STPU with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) on concrete columns, confinement effect can be enhanced to maximize seismic strength and ductility.

  • Recently, numerous construction techniques for repairing and strengthening methods for above ground or air exposed concrete structure have been developed. However repairing and strengthening methods for underwater structural members under continuous loading, such as piers and steel piles need the further development. Therefore, this study develops an aqua epoxy, which can be used for repairing and strengthening of structural members located underwater. Moreover, using the epoxy material and strengthening fibers, a fiber reinforced composite sheet called Aqua Advanced FRP (AAF) for underwater usage is developed. To verify and to obtain properties of the material and the performance of AAF, several tests such as pull-off strength test, bond shear strength test, and chemical resistance test, were carried out. The results showed that the developed aqua epoxy does not easily dissolve in wet conditions and does not create any residual particle during hardening. In spite of underwater conditions, it showed the superior workability, because of the high viscosity over 30,000 cps and adhesion capacity over 2 MPa, which are nearly equivalent to those used in dry conditions. In case of the chemical resistance test, the developed aqua epoxy and composite showed the weight change of about 0.5~1.0%, which verifies the superior chemical resistance.

  • In this study, an experiment which utilized glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) plank as the permanent formwork of cast-in-place high strength concrete structures was performed. The GFRP plank currently being produced has smooth surface so that it causes problems in behavior with concrete. Therefore, this research analyzed the flexure/shear failure behavior of composite beams, which used GFRP plank as its permanent formwork and has short shear span ratio, by setting the sand coated at GFRP bottom surface, the perforation and interval of the GFRP plank web, and the width of the top flange as the experimental variables. As a result of the experiments for effectiveness of sand attachment in case of not perforated web, approximately 47% higher ultimate load value was obtained when the sand was coated than not coated case and bending/shear failure mode was observed. For effectiveness of perforation and interval of gap, approximately 24% higher maximum load value was seen when interval of the perforation gap was short and the fine aggregate was not coated, and approximately 25% lower value was observed when the perforation gap was not dense on the coated specimen. For effectiveness of top flange breadth, the ultimate load value was approximately 17% higher in case of 40mm than 20mm width.

  • This paper presents both experimental and analytical studies for the development of an ECC(Engineered Cementitious Composites) using ground granulated blast furnace slag(slag). This material has been focused on achieving moderately high composite strength while maintaining high ductility, represented by strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension. In the material development, micromechanics was adopted to properly select optimized range of the composition based on steady-state cracking theory and experimental studies on matrix, and interfacial properties. A single fiber pullout test and a wedge splitting test were employed to measure the bond properties of the fiber in a matrix and the fracture toughness of mortar matrix. The addition of the slag resulted in slight increases in the frictional bond strength and the fracture toughness. Subsequent direct tensile tests demonstrate that the fiber reinforced mortar exhibited high ductile uniaxial tension behavior with a maximum strain capacity of 3.6%. Both ductility and tensile strength(~5.3 MPa) of the composite produced with slag were measured to be significantly higher than those of the composite without slag. The slag particles contribute to improving matrix strength and fiber dispersion, which is incorporated with enhanced workability attributed to the oxidized grain surface. This result suggests that, within the limited slag dosage employed in the present study, the contribution of slag particles to the workability overwhelms the side-effect of decreased potential of saturated multiple cracking.

  • RC shear wall sections which have irregular shapes such as T, ㄱ, ㄷ sections are typically used in low-rise buildings in Korea. Pushover analysis of building containing such members costs a lot of computation time and needs professional knowledge since it requires complicated modeling and, sometimes, fails to converge. In this study, a method using an equivalent column element for the shear wall is proposed. The equivalent column element consists of an elastic column, an inelastic rotational spring, and rigid beams. The inelastic properties of the rotational spring represent the nonlinear behavior of the shearwall and are obtained from the section analysis results and moment distribution for the member. The use of an axial force to compensate the difference in the axial deformation between the equivalent column element and the actual shear wall is also proposed. The proposed method is applied for the pushover analysis of a 5- story shear wall-frame building and the results are compared with ones using the fiber elements. The comparison shows that the inelastic behavior at the same drift was comparable. However, the performance points estimated using the pushover curves showed some deviations, which seem to be caused by the differences of estimated yield point and damping ratios.

  • Steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) is widely used for tunnel lining structure such as shot-crete in NATM tunnel and segment in TBM tunnel. In tunnel fire accidents, structural performance of a lining is very important because the lining is the structure that directly exposed to fire. In this study, the effects of high temperatures, mix ratios and types on failure pattern, DPT tensile strength and coefficient of variation were investigated through Double Punch Tests (DPT) of SFRC subjected to high temperatures. In the results, it is confirmed that the residual DPT tensile strength increases as for SFRC and this is more in SFRC with higher mix ratio. But, the equation for evaluation of DPT tensile strength does not involve the number of failure surfaces SFRC specimens subjected to high temperatures, therefore, it is required to investigate more fracture energy in DPT tests.

  • For the construction of PC bridge piers the implementation of 1992 seismic provisions, longitudinal steels were practically lap-spliced in the plastic hinge region. Experimental investigation was conducted ductility of evaluate the seismic earthquake-experienced reinforced concrete columns with 2,5 aspect ratio. Six test specimens were mode with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P=0.1f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that PC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.
