  • This study is about a hybrid lightweight cowl crossbeam structure with high rigidity and ability to absorb collision energy to support the cockpit module, which is an automobile interior part, and to absorb energy during a collision. It is a manufacturing process in which composite material bracket parts are inserted and injected into existing steel bars. When considering the mounting condition of a vehicle, the optimization of the fastening condition of the two parts and the mechanical properties of the composite material is acting as an important factor. Therefore, this study is about a composite material having a volume content of Polyamide(PA) and Glass Fiber used as a composite material for a composite material-metal hybrid cowl crossbeam. As a result of analyzing the physical properties of the PA/GF composite material, experimental data were obtained that can further enhance tensile strength and flexural strength by using PA66 rather than PA6 used as a base material for the composite material. And based on this, it contributed to securing the advantage of lightening by using high-stiffness composite material by improving the high disadvantage of the weight of the cowl crossbeam material, which was made only of existing metal materials.

  • The specific strength of the fiber reinforced composite material is closely related to the anisotropy of the material. For the quantitative characterization of the anisotropy in the composite material, applied was CODF concept which was extensively used in the metallic material. As the results, the anisotropy of the material could be quantitatively analysed from the measurement of the phase velocities of the angular dependent $SH_o$ waves.

  • In this study, chopped Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber Reinforced Porous Reaction Bonded SiC (RBSC) composites and it fabrication process were developed by using Si melt infiltration process. The porosity and average pore size in fabricated chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites were in the range of $30{\sim}40%$ and $40-90{\mu}m$, which mainly determined by the SiC powder size used as starting material and amount of residual Si in porous composites. The maximum flexural strength of chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composite was as high as 80 MPa. The delayed fracture behavior was observed in chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites upon 3-point bending strength test.

  • In order to analyze the stress distribution and stress concentration factors in composite materials, especially, in the short fiber of the reinforced composite materials by photoelastic method, it is necessary to develop the photoelastic model material having short fibers with arbitrary size and orientation. In this paper, the orthotropic photoelastic model material having short fibers for the transparent type photoelastic device was developed by the embedded corrosion fiber method. It was found that the model material was satisfactory to the properties of photoelastic model material, and also that the embedded corrosion fiber method can be employed for developing a model material with arbitrary size and direction to analyze the stress distribution and crack problems of composite materials.

  • Laminated composite structures find wide range of applications in many branches of technology. They are much suited for weight sensitive structures (like aircraft) where thinner and lighter members made of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials are used. The orientations of fiber direction in layers and number of layers and the thickness of the layers as well as material of composites play a major role in determining the strength and stiffness. Thus the basic design problem is to determine the optimum stacking sequence in terms of laminate thickness, material and fiber orientation. In this paper, a new optimization technique called Cellular Automata (CA) has been combined with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to develop a different search and optimization algorithm, known as Cellular Genetic Algorithm (CGA), which considers the laminate thickness, angle of fiber orientation and the fiber material as discrete variables. This CGA has been successfully applied to obtain the optimal fiber orientation, thickness and material lay-up for multi-layered composite hybrid beams plates and shells subjected to static buckling and dynamic constraints.

  • In composite materials, the fracture perpendicular to the fiber direction usually shows a non-linear behavior accompannying blunting and plastic deformation around the crack tip. In this study, the fracture thoughness in random short fiber SMC composite material and Carbon/Epoxy composite material is estimated by the A.M.(Area Method) and the G.L.M.(Generalized Locus Method) which can determine a stable total energy release rate(G$_T$) not only in highly elghly elastic material but also in highly non-linear materials.

  • The researches on the development of composite material propeller with outstanding damping effects have been actively attempted for the reduction of radiation noise of underwater vehicle propeller. Composite material suitable for the flexible propeller has the following advantages, such as high specific strength and specific stiffness, low thermal expansion coefficient, high resistance against environmental deterioration, low possibility of corrosion due to cavitation, nonoccurrence of rapid fracture due to fatigue, easy molding of complicated shape, easy repair maintenance and low production costs, etc. For the confirmation of optimal fiber array structures of composite material for the production of the flexible propeller blades, in this study, mechanical characteristics of its specimens according to materials were obtained and structural characteristics of propeller blade were also examined according to materials and stacking fiber arrays.

  • In the study, investigation of fiber- reinforced composite materials that can be an alternative to conventional steel was performed by finite element analysis with the help of software. Steel and composite materials have been studied on a four axle truck chassis model. Three-dimensional finite element model was created with software, and then analyzes were performed. The analyses were performed for static and dynamic/fatigue cases. Fatigue cases are formed with the help of design spectra model and fatigue analyses were performed as static analyses with this design spectra. First, analyses were performed for steel and after that optimization analyses were made for the AS4-PEEK carbon fiber composite and Eglass-Epoxy fiber composite materials. Optimization of composite material analyzes include determining the total laminate thickness, thickness of each ply, orientation of each ply and ply stacking sequence. Analyzes were made according to macro mechanical properties of composite, micromechanics case has not been considered. Improvements in weight reduction up to %50 provided at the end of the composite optimization analyzes with satisfying stiffness performance of chassis. Fatigue strength of the composite structure depends on various factors such as, fiber orientation, ply thickness, ply stack sequence, fiber ductility, ductility of the matrix, loading angle. Therefore, the accuracy of theoretical calculations and analyzes should be correlated by testing.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the properties of fiber-reinforced composite and stainless steel twisted retainers for orthodontic retention. Methods: Three different span lengths (5.0, 8.0, and 14.0 mm) of fiber-reinforced composite were investigated. The three fiber-reinforced composite retainer groups were subdivided according to the storage condition (dry and wet), resulting in a total of six groups. Each stainless steel and fiber-reinforced composite group was comprised of six specimens. The three-point bending flexural test was conducted using a universal testing machine. ANOVA was used to assess differences in the maximum load and maximum stress according to the span length, material, and storage condition. Post-hoc comparisons were performed if necessary. Results: The maximum stress and maximum load were significantly (p < 0.001) associated with the span length, material, and storage condition. The significant interaction between the material and span length (p < 0.001) indicated the differential effects of the material for each span length on the maximum stress and maximum load, with the difference between materials being the highest for the maximum span length. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that fiber-reinforced composite retainers may be an effective alternative for orthodontic retention in patients with esthetic concerns or allergy to conventional stainless steel wires.
