The aim of this study was to optimize staining procedures for muscle fiber typing efficiently and rapidly in bovine and porcine skeletal muscles, such as longissimus thoracis, psoas major, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus muscles. The commercially available monoclonal anti-myosin heavy chain (MHC) antibodies and fluorescent dye-conjugated secondary antibodies were applied to immunofluorescence histology. Two different procedures, such as cocktail and serial staining, were adopted to immunofluorescence analysis. In bovine muscles, three pure types (I, IIA, and IIX) and one hybrid type, IIA+IIX, were identified by the cocktail procedure with a combination of BA-F8, SC-71, BF-35, and 6H1 anti-MHC antibodies. Porcine muscle fibers were typed into four pure types (I, IIA, IIX, and IIB) and two hybrid types (IIA+IIX and IIX+IIB) by a serial procedure with a combination of BA-F8, SC-71, BF-35, and BF-F3. Unlike for bovine muscle, the cocktail procedure was not recommended in porcine muscle fiber typing because of the abnormal reactivity of SC-71 antibody under cocktail procedure. Within the four antibodies, combinations of two or more anti-MHC antibodies allowed us to distinguish pure fiber types or all fiber types including hybrid types. Application of other secondary antibodies conjugated with different fluorescent dyes allowed us to get improved image resolution that clearly distinguished hybrid fibers. Muscle fiber characteristics differed depending on species and muscle types.
Objective: To develop healthier comminuted meat products to meet consumer demand, the gel properties, rheological properties, microstructure and water distribution of pork meat batters formulated with various amounts of bamboo shoot dietary fiber (BSDF) were investigated. Methods: Different levels of BSDF (0% to 4%) were added to pork batters, and the pH, color, water-holding capacity, texture and rheological properties of pork batters were determined. Then, pork batters were analyzed for their microstructure and water distribution using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR). Results: Compared with the control, BSDF addition into meat batters showed a significant reduction in L*-value and a significant increase in b*-value (p<0.05). BSDF addition of up to 4% reduced the pH value of pork batters by approximately 0.15 units; however, the cooking loss and expressible water loss decreased significantly (p<0.05) with the increased addition of BSDF. The hardness and gel strength were noticeably enhanced (p<0.05) as the content of BSDF increased. The rheological results showed that BSDF added into pork batters produced higher storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") values. The SEM images suggested that the addition of BSDF could promote pork batters to form a more uniform and compact microstructure. The proportion of immobilized water increased significantly (p<0.05), while the population of free water was decreased (p<0.05), indicating that BSDF improved the water-holding capability of pork batters by decreasing the fraction of free water. Conclusion: BSDF could improve the gel properties, rheological properties and water distribution of pork meat batters and decrease the proportion of free water, suggesting that BSDF has great potential as an effective binder in comminuted meat products.
In a global market environment with information technology, the textile and apparel industry tries to survive by having competitive power embedded in Supply Chain Management to improve the interrelation among different stages of industries such as fiber, textile, apparel manufacturing, and retailing. The purpose of this empirical study was to investigate performance on Supply Chain Management of textile firms such as 4 textile export firms and 10 collaborate firms which were adopted SCM system. For research methodology, we developed questionnaires based upon interview and literature review. The results of this study were as follows: There were neutral responses or somewhat dissatisfactions on SCM application from CEOs, CMOs, site workers, and collaborators, but over half of respondents indicated 21-40% improvement of affairs. Standard documents and information sharing of SCM system were salient effects. SCM system with standard documents improved receipts/payments and inventory management most.
SCM as the important marketing strategy enhance the firm's efficiency and compatibility in global market environment such as global outsourcing. Firms adopted SCM realized the need to evaluate precisely the performance of SCM. In spite of importance of SCM, there was not much intention and research to measure SCM performance in textile fashion industry. Therefore, the purpose of this case study was to measure performance of supply chain management in textile fashion business using BSC(Balanced Score Card) to measure not only financial perspective but also non-financial perspectives such as customer perspective, internal business perspectives, financial perspective, and innovation & learning perspective. The questionnaire developed by the reviews of the literature was adopted for this study. The results of this study showed that SCM performance was enhanced from the point of customer perspective(cost, quality, time, service), financial perspective(cash cycle time, inventory turn over, inventory obsolescence, return on asset, return on investment, capacity utilization), and innovation & learning perspective(cost for human resource management, service for human resources). But there was same performance level regarding internal business perspective(lead time, cost for manufacturing process, product quality control, productive flexibility for time, quantity, and variety). Therefore, we should keep close relationship and two way communication among supply chain members to promote better SCM performance.
Aggregation states ans electro-optic properties of a binary mixture by mixing a side chain type liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and a low molecular weight liquid crystal(LMLC) have been studied. Side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, p-cyanophenol, p-methoxyphenol and polysiloxanes. Low molecular weight liquid crystals were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid and 4-cyano 4'-hydroxy biphenyl. And then, their properties were compared with blended liquid crystals. The thermal properties of the blended liquid crystals were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The phase behavior of blended sample with temperature were also observed polarized microscope with hot stage. Thus, it seemed to us that a study of LC polysiloxanes with LMLC would be useful, especially in view of the fact that, systematic investigations have been carried out on the effects of changes in LCP/LMLC binary system on the properties of this relatively new type of liquid crystal.

The effect of UV and $^60{Co}$ gamma radiations on the physical and mechanical properties of nylon 6 mono-filaments with different draw ratios has been studied. Specimens were exposed to either up to 25 Mrad of gamma or up to 168 hrs of intense UV irradiation. The results show that nylon mono-filaments exposed to gamma rays, with much higher quantum energy than UV, undergo a larger extent of molecular chain scission. Higher irradiation dose also results in the production of insoluble, macroscopic three-dimensional cross-linked network structure. The amorphous regions with a lower density of cohesive energy (lower molecular orientation) show a higher extent of cross linking reaction whereas amorphous regions with a higher density of cohesive energy (higher orientation) show higher extent of chain scission reaction, irrespective of UV ray or gamma ray irradiation.
We have performed Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies on blends of poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) with poly(n-alkylene 2,6-naphthalates) containing alkylene units of different lengths. The results indicate that each poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and poly(trimethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PTN) blend with PVPh is immiscible or partially miscible, but blends of poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PBN) with PVPh are miscible over the whole range of compositions in the amorphous state. FTIR spectroscopic analysis confirmed that significant degree of intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between the PBN ester carbonyl groups and the PVPh hydroxyl groups. The large difference in the degree of mixing in these blend systems is described in terms of the effect that chain mobility has on the accessibility of the ester carbonyl functional groups toward the hydroxyl groups of PVPh, which in turn impacts the miscibility of these blends.
This study was conducted to manufacture the soluble micro-fiber and to synthesize low melting polymer for the interior fabric not to use the polyurethane resin causing some problems. Low melting polyester for weft yarn was introduced by adding 30-40 mol% ratio of isophthalic acid to a main chain of polyethylene terephthalate to decrease the melting temperature up to heat setting temperature. Micro-fiber for warp yarn consisted of both soluble and insoluble components with multi-layered structure. When the soluble micro-fiber was treated by alkaline hydrolysis with 3-5% concentration of NaOH, it showed the turning point at 28% weight loss since soluble polyester was hydrolyzed approximate five times faster than regular polyester.

The effects of nitrile group substitution onto aromatic polyamide backbone on the gas permeability and permselectivity of the polymers are examined. The gas permeability of aromatic polyamides increase with increasing the content of nitrile group substitution, whereas the permselectivity decreases with increasing the nitrile group contents. The effects of chain linrearity on the permeability and permselectivity are also examined. The non-linearity of the polymers increases the permeability. These behaviors are interpreted in terms of chain packing and crystallinity of the aromatic polyamides.

The recent advancements in sensing technologies allow us to record measurements from target structures at multiple locations and with relatively high spatial resolution. Such measurements can be used to develop data-driven methodologies for condition assessment, control, and health monitoring of target structures. One of the state-of-the-art technologies, Fiber Optic Strain Sensors (FOSS), is developed at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, and is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. These strain sensors are accurate, lightweight, and can provide almost continuous strain-field measurements along the length of the fiber. The strain measurements can then be used for real-time shape-sensing and operational load-estimation of complex structural systems. While several works have demonstrated the successful implementation of FOSS on large-scale real-life aerospace structures (i.e., airplane wings), there is paucity of studies in the literature that have investigated the potential of extending the application of FOSS into civil structures (e.g., tall buildings, bridges, etc.). This work assesses the feasibility of using FOSS to predict operational loads (e.g., wind loads) on chain-like structures. A thorough investigation is performed using analytical, computational, and experimental models of a 4-story steel building test specimen, developed at the University of Southern California. This study provides guidelines on the implementation of the FOSS technology on building-like structures, addresses the associated technical challenges, and suggests potential modifications to a load-estimation algorithm, to achieve a robust methodology for predicting operational loads using strain-field measurements.
