  • The fracture toughness and micro-fracture mechanisms of the porous glass and stainless fiber reinforced glass composite were evaluated by using the acoustice mission(AE) technique, fracture toughness $test(K_{IC})$ and the macroscopic observation of the specimen surface which was being under the loading. At initial portion of the loading, the AE signals with low energy, of which origins were considered as the micro-cracks formated at the crack tip, were emitted. With increasing the applied load, AE signals having higher energies were generated due to the coalesence of micro-cracks and fast fracture. Based on the such relationship between AE emission and loading condition, fracture toughness $K_{IAE}$ could be defined successfully be using the $K_I$ value corresponding to an abrupt change of the accumulated AE signal energies emitted during the fracture toughness test. In spite of its brittleness of glass material, nonlinear deformation behavior before maximum load was observed due to the formation of micro-cracks. Further, the stainless fiber may have attributed to the improvement of fracture toughness and the resistance to crack propagation comparing to noncomposited materials Finally, models of the micro-fracture process combined with the AE sources for the porous glass material and its composite were proposed paying attention to the micro-crack nucleation and its coalescence at the crack tip. Fiber fracture and its Pullout, deformation of fiber itself were also delinated from the model.

  • Optical-fiber sensors have been developed to determine the concentrations of glucose and lactic acid in blood samples. Fluorescence dye [tris(2,2'-biphenyridine)-ruthenium(II)-chloride (RuBPY)] was entrapped by using a silicon to the unclad tip of a glass optic fiber. Enzymes like glucose oxidase (GOD) and lactate oxidase (LOD) have been immobilized by acrylamide resin adhesive, adsorption with zeolite or covalent bonding with aminopropyl-triethoxysilan. The fiber-optic glucose/lactate sensor was then used to analyze the concentrations of glucose and lactate in blood samples. The results were compared with the results of HPLC analysis and their difference was in error by less then 5 %.

  • A new and simple calibration technique that greatly enhances the measurement sensitivity of conventional fiber-optic reflectometry based on Fresnel reflection from the tip of a fiber is used for demonstrating the feasibility of measuring solute concentrations and index changes in fluids to very high precision. The amplitude of pulses originating from reflection from the fiber-fluid interface is compared in real-time with the amplitude of reference pulses from a fiber-air interface such that errors caused by pulse amplitude fluctuations and slightly varying detector responses are corrected. Using solutions of salt and water, it is demonstrated that the technique is capable of measuring index changes of about $1 {\times} 10^{-5}$ corresponding to a salt concentrations of 0.01 %.

  • In this work the optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors were developed by using fluorescent dye and enzyme immobilized on the end tip of an optical fiber. 3-Glycidyloxypropyl)methyldiethoxysilane (GPTMS), (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) were used to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOD), lactate oxidase (LOD) and ruthenium(II) complex (tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium(II), $Ru(dpp)_3^{2+}$) as oxygen sensitive fluorescent dye. MTMS sol-gel was an excellent supporting material for the immobilization of $Ru(dpp)_3^{2+}$, GOD, and LOD on the optical fiber. Storage stability of the optical fiber glucose sensor was kept constant over 20 days, while the optical fiber lactate sensor had constant storage stability over 17 days. The optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors also maintained good operational stability for 20 hours and 14 hours, respectively. The activities of the immobilized enzymes were most excellent at pH 7 and at $25^{\circ}C$. On-line monitoring of glucose and lactate in a simulated process was performed with the optical fiber glucose and lactate biosensors. On-line monitoring results were agreed with those of off-line data measured with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

  • Tensile properties and fracture toughness of monolithic aluminum, fiber reinforced plastics and glass fiber/aluminum hybrid laminates under tensile loads have been investigated using plain coupon and single-edge-notched specimens. Elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength of GFMLs showed different characteristic behaviors according to the Al kind, fiber orientation and composition ratio. Fracture, toughness of A-GFML-UD which was determined by the evaluation of $K_{IC}$ and $G_{IC}$ based on critical load was similar to that of GFRP-UD and was much higher than monolithic Al. Therefore, A-GFML-UD presented superior fracture toughness as well as prominent damage tolerance in comparison to its constituent Al. By separating Al sheet from GFMLs after the test, optical microscope observation of fracture zone of GFRP layer in the vicinity of crack tip revealed that crack advance of GFMLs depended on the orientation of fiber layer as well as Al/fiber composition ratio.

  • The propagating crack problems under dynamic plane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems in orthortropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components around the crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress components of dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement components of dynamic displacement field in the crack tip of orthotropic material under the dynamic load and the steady state in crack propagation were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress component and dynamic displacement components derived in this study are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determinded by using the concept of crack closure closure energy with the dynamic stresses and represented according to physical properties of the orthotrophic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the stress value of stress components in crack tip. The stress value of the stress component of crack tip is greater when fiber direction coincides with the crack propagation than when fider direction is normal to the crack propagation.

  • We attached a fiber tip on the branch of a quartz crystal oscillator in order to make a feedback control system for near field optical microscope. The electrical impedance of the quartz crystal oscillator depends on the distance between the surface of the sample and the tip caused by the surface damping. Using this method, we can directly monitor the distance between the sample and the tip without inserting extra beam which might give extra optical noise. We characterize the XY scanning resolution and the amplitude of the vibrating tip and the Z-dependent decay of the evanescent wave.

  • A fiberoptic sensor using a low-coherence SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employing an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Peort interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one, overcomes the ambiguous reading caused by the highly periodic natrue of conventional high-precision interferometric sensors and provides unambiguous identification of the desired phase among several candidates on the transfer function of an interferometric signal. A tentative application to the temperature sensor shows the potential that the fiberoptic sensor has a side-dynamic range of $0-900^{\circ}C$ as well as reasonable resolution higher than $0.1^{\circ}C$ without ambiguity. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the proposed fiberoptic sensor will give obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.

  • Nanoscaled PVA fibers were prepared by electrospinning. This paper described the electrospinning process, the processing conditions fiber morphology, and some potential applications of the PVA nato-fibers. PVA fibers with various diameters (50-250 nm) were obtained by changing solution concentration, voltage and tip to collector distance (TCD). The major factor was the concentration of PVA solution which affected the fiber diameter evidently. Increasing the concentration, the fiber diameter was increased, and the amount of beads was reduced even to 0%. The fibers were found be efficiently crosslinked by glyoxal during the curing process. Phosphoric acid was used as a catalyst activator to reduce strength losses during crosslinking. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) techniques were employed to characterize the morphology and crosslinking of PVA fibers. It was fecund that the primary factor which affected the crosslinking density was the content of chemical crosslinking agent.
