  • In this study, the effect of molding condition on the tensile properties for plain woven hemp fiber reinforced green composite was examined. The tensile properties of the composite were compared with those of the plain woven jute fiber composite fabricated by the same process. Emulsion type biodegradable resin or polypropylene sheet was used as matrix. The composites were processed by the compression molding where the molding temperature and its heating time were changed from 160 to $190^{\circ}C$ and from 15 to 25 min, respectively. The following results were obtained from the experiment. The tensile property of hemp fiber reinforced polypropylene is improved in comparison with polypropylene bulk. The strength of composite is about 2.6 times that of the resin bulk specimen. Hemp fiber is more effective than jute fiber as reinforcement for green composite from the viewpoint of strength. The molding temperature and time are suitable below $180^{\circ}C$ and 20 min for hemp fiber reinforced green composite. Hemp fiber green composite has a tendency to decrease its tensile strength when fiber content is over 50 wt%.

  • Today, carbon fibers are used as heating elements. Carbon fibers are generally used to reinforce composite materials because they are lightweight and have a high strength and modulus. Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are used for aerospace, automobile, and wind turbine blade applications. This work explored the possibility of using carbon fiber reinforced composite materials as self heating materials. The temperatures of the carbon fiber reinforced composites were measured. These results verified that the carbon fiber reinforced composite materials could be used as heating elements. A glass fiber was laminated using various methods. The thermal characteristics of the composites were evaluated. This confirmed that the generation of heat varied according to the lamination thicknesses of the carbon fiber and glass fiber. As the number of carbon fiber laminations increased, the heat-generating temperature increased. In contrast, as the number of glass fiber laminations increased, the amount of heat decreased. The generation of heat and ability to remain warm could be controlled by controlling the carbon fiber and glass fiber laminations.

  • Due to their flexible tailoring qualities, composites have become fascinating materials for structural engineers. While the research area of fiber-reinforced composite materials was previously limited to synthetic materials, natural fibers have recently become the primary research focus as the best alternative to artificial fibers. The natural fibers are eco-friendly and relatively cheaper than synthetic fibers. The main concern of current research into natural fiber-reinforced composites is the prediction and enhancement of the effective material properties. In the present work, finite element analysis is used with a numerical homogenization approach to determine the effective material properties of jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composites with various volume fractions of fiber. The finite element analysis results for the jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composite are then compared with several well-known analytical models.

  • Fiber-reinforced materials have highly favorable mechanical properties. and their strength-to-weight ratios are superior to those of most alloys. When compared to metals they offer many other advantages as well. including non-corrosiveness. translucency. good bonding properties. and ease ofrepair. Fiber-reinforced materials can be categorized to pre-impregnated. impregnation required. dental laboratory products. chairside products and prefabricated posts. so it is not suprising that fiber-reinforced composites have potential for use in many applications in dentistry. Fiber-reinforced materials can be utilized in frameworks for crowns. anterior or posterior fixed prostheses. chairs ide tooth replacements. periodontal splints. customized posts. prefabricated posts. orthodontic retention. denture reinforcements and in implants dentistry. To realize the full potential of using fiber-reinforced composite restorations. it is essential that the clinician and laboratory technician understand concepts of tooth preparation and framework design. Also practitioner may appreciate the background information and other details about the materials themselves so that identify the rationale for their use in various clinical situations. select well-suited materials. and carry out related procedures. Understanding the material properties and take many attentions. fiber-reinforced materials will give more esthetic. more easy. more strong and more reliable restorations.ations.

  • Since the electromagnetic properties of fiber reinforced polymeric composites can be tailored effectively by adding small amount of electromagnetic powders to the matrix of composites, they are plausible materials for fabricating the radar absorbing structures (RAS) of desired performance. In order to design the effective electromagnetic wave (EM) absorber with the fiber reinforced polymeric composites, the electromagnetic characteristics with respect to the constituents of the composite should be available in the target frequency band. In order to describe the dielectric behavior of low loss unidirectional fiber reinforced composite, theoretical models and mixture equations for estimating its dielectric constant were proposed with respect to the fiber, matrix volume fractions and fiber orientations, and verified by the experiments. From the investigation, it was found that the suggested binary mixture rules agreed well with the experimental results.

  • Recently, the friction and wear behaviors of UHMWPE, ceramic and metal is being researched actively for the use as an artificial hip-joint. In this study, because of good wear properties of carbon fiber, we made experiments about the friction and wear of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite under the lubricative and the dry condition. The possibilities of carbon-carbon composite for the artificial hip joint application was studied from this results.

  • The sliding friction and wear properties of mineral fiber reinforced composite(MF) and glass fiber reinforced composites(GF) are investigated to clarify their field of use and the role of each fiber in friction material. Friction and wear test reveals that GF composite has better wear resistance even though with low friction coefficient, comparing with MF composite. Glass fiber strengthen effectively the matrix and may absorb friction energy to convert it into the fracture energy of them, as well as its lubricative role. However, mineral fiber in MF composite is too small to strengthen the matrix. Then MF composite are easily plowed and worn out by asperity on counter material. Friction coefficient of MF composite is higher friction coefficient than that of GF composite and varied widely with test.

  • In order to describe the Bauschinger and transient behavior of orthotropic fiber-reinforced composites, a combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law based on the non-linear kinematic hardening rule was considered here, in particular, based on the Chaboche type law. In this modified constitutive law, the anisotropic evolution of the back-stress was properly accounted for. Also, to represent the orthotropy of composite materials, Hill's 1948 quadratic yield function and the orthotropic elasticity constitutive equations were utilized. Furthermore, the numerical formulation to update the stresses was also developed based on the incremental deformation theory for the boundary value problems. Numerical examples confirmed that the new law based on the anisotropic evolution of the back-stress complies well with the constitutive behavior of highly anisotropic materials such as fiber-reinforced composites.

  • A356 Al composites reinforced by short carbon fiber were prepared through the 2-step process: fabrication of a composite precursor and ultrasonication of the precursor melt. The short carbon fibers were coated with 0.15~1.5 ㎛ thick SiC layer by a carbothermal reaction, and an amount of the carbon fiber reinforcement was determined to be 1.5 vol.% and 4.0 vol.%, respectively. The addition of the carbon fiber increased the hardness of A356 alloy. However, tensile strength did not increase in the as-cast composites regardless of the SiC coating and volume fraction of the carbon fiber, due to the debonding which reduced load transfer efficiency from matrix to fiber at the interface. After T6-treatment of the composites, a significant increase in strength occurred only in the composite reinforced by the SiC-coated short carbon fiber, which was considered to result from the formation of a precipitate improving the Al/SiC interfacial strength.

  • Non-contact technique should be developed for receiving ultrasonic wave for on-line monitoring of processing defects of fiber reinforced composites, since couplant must be applied on composite materials when conventional ultrasonic testing technique was used. Restriction of conventional ultrasonic testing technique was proven by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic wave on CFRP in various direction of wave propagation with various incident angle of ultrasonic beam. Air-coupled transducer and laser interferometer were applied for non-contacting reception of ultrasonic wave in fiber reinforced composite materials. Air-coupled transducer has optimal sensitivity and frequency band of 300kHz has homogeneous characteristics on direction of wave propagation.
