EFFECTS OF VARYING DIETARY LEVELS OF TOTAL DIGESTIBLE NUTRIENTS, PROTEIN AND FIBER ON THE GROWTH OF CROSSBRED HOLSTEIN HEIFERS FED UREA-TREATED RICE STRAW DIETS UNDER TWO FEEDING SYSTEMS

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of urea-treated rice straw feeding on the growth performance of crossbred Holstein heifers under different feeding conditions. In the first experiment, the animals were given diets having 2 levels of TDN and CP and 3 levels of crude fiber (22, 30 and 36%) which were formulated with urea-treated rice straw and concentrates. Daily weight gain of heifers was not different between 22% and 30% CF diets, but the reduction of TDN or CP level to 90% of the requirements decreased the weight gain. Fiber content of 36% also reduced the body weight gain. The reduction of TDN significantly reduced DM intake and increased feed conversion ratio. Feed cost per kg weight gain was significantly increased by an increase in CF to 36%. In the second experiment, separate feeding and total mixing feeding were compared. There were no significant differences between the two feeding systems in body weight gain although the possibility of superiority in SF to TMF remained. DM intake was not affected by the feeding system, but 30% CF diet gave higher DM intake. Feed cost per kg weight gain was lower in the 30% CF diet.

Effects of Application of Nightsoil Sludge Compost on Dry Matter Yields and Nutritive Value of Orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) (분뇨 슬러지 퇴비 시용이 Orchardgrass의 건물 수량과 영양가에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of application levels of nightsoil sludge compost(NSC) in 3 and 4 cuttings per annum on the dry matter yields and nutritive value of orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.). Annual nightsoil sludge compost(NSC) were applied at levels of 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 ton $㏊^{respectively}$ . Relative yields of each cut to annual dry matter yield were 29.9%, 46.% and 23.2% for 1st cut, 2nd cut and 3rd cut in 3 cutting system, 23.7%, 29.3%, 34.0% and 13.0% for 1st cut, 2nd cut, 3rd cut and 4th cut in 4 cutting system, respectively. Significantly higher dry matter yield of orchardgrass obtained were 8.11 ton $㏊^{-1}$ at level of 40 ton ㏊$^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ in 3 cutting systems, ranges of 7.50~10.71 ton $㏊^{-1}$ at level of 10~80 ton ㏊$^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ in 4 cutting systems than those of non application level of NSC, respectively(p〈0.05). The mean efficiency of dry matter production to application of NSC(kg DM/ton NSC) were 46 and 102 kg in 3 and 4 cutting systems, respectively. Although th contents of crude protein(CP, %) of orchardgrass were significantly higher at the application levels of 10~80 ton $㏊^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ -1/ by NSC than those of the application levels at the 0 ton $㏊^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ in 3 and 4 cutting systems(p〈0.05), the contents of neutral detergent fiber(NDF, %) and acid detergent fiber(ADF, %) were lower in NSC plots than those at the non-application plots of NSC. The contents of total digestible nutrient(TDN, %) and relative feed value(RFV) of orchardgrass were significantly increased with increase the applicaton levels of NSC(p〈0.05).

  • This study was carried out to develop the Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards utilizing the relinquished sludges occurring from the making process of Korean classic paper Hanji. The bark of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb.) has been used as a raw material since past hundreds and thousands years. Korean paper(Hanji) sludge was divided into two kinds, the one was the white sludge from the first stage and the other was the black sludge occurring from the final stage of Korean paper(Hanji) making. Four levels of the mixed ratio of each white or black sludge to wood fiber(10:90, 20:80, 30:70 and 40:60), three levels of the resin adhesives(PMDI, urea and phenol resin) and three levels of the density(0.60, 0.75 and 0.90) were designed to investigate the mechanical properties of Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards. From the results and discussion, it could be concluded as follows : 1. In the white and black sludge-wood fiber composite boards, bending modulus of rupture showed the clear decreasing tendency according to the increase of sludge additive, but it was clearly increased with the increase of specific gravity. Modulus of elasticity showed the same tendency as in the modulus of rupture, and also tensile and internal bonding strength had the same tendencies as in these bending properties. 2. Among the resin adhesives, PMDI or urea resin showed great values in MOR of white sludge-wood fiber composite board, but urea resin was greater than PMDI in MOR and MOE of black sludge-wood fiber composite board. Tensile and internal bonding strength showed the same tendencies as in white sludge-wood fiber composite board. 3. It is suggested that the white sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with PMDI or black sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with urea resin were able to made similar boards to general fiberboard by the mixed ratio 20:80 of sludge to wood fiber.

  • A laboratory investigation was conducted to characterize the flexural fatigue behavior of high performance fiber reinforced cement mortar. Five specimens for statics flexural test and fourteen specimens for the flexural fatigue test were made based on the fiber mixing ratio. Static flexural tests were firstly performed to obtain magnitudes of static failure loads and stress levels before flexural fatigue tests. The flexural fatigue behaviors were investigated based on the stress level and fiber mixing ratio. Also, the equations for the interrelation of the flexural fatigue stress levels with the number at loading cycle were proposed.

Effects of Dietary Fiber Extracted from Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) on the Physico-Chemical and Sensory Characteristics of Reduced-Fat Frankfurters

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of reducing fat levels from 30% to 25, 20, and 15% by substituting pork fat with water and pumpkin fiber (2%) on the quality of frankfurters compared with control. Decreasing the fat concentration from 30% to 15% significantly increased moisture content, redness of meat batter and frankfurter, cooking loss, and water exudation, and decreased fat content, energy value, pH, and lightness of meat batter and frankfurter, hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, and apparent viscosity. The addition of 2% pumpkin fiber was significantly increased moisture content, yellowness of meat batter and frankfurter, hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, and apparent viscosity, whereas reduced cooking loss and emulsion stability. The treatment of reduced-fat frankfurters formulated with 20 and 25% fat levels and with pumpkin fiber had sensory properties similar to the high-fat control frankfurters. The results demonstrate that when the reduced-fat frankfurter with 2% added pumpkin fiber and water replaces fat levels can be readily made with high quality and acceptable sensory properties.

Supplementary Effect of the High Dietary Fiber Rice on Lipid Metabolism in Diabetic KK Mice (고식이섬유쌀의 급여가 KK 당뇨 마우스의 체내 지질 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the supplementary effects of Suwon 464 developed by Rural Development Administration, which has over two times of dietary fiber content compared with normal rice (Ilpum), on lipid metabolism in diabetic mice. We supplied 5 kinds of experimental diets (com starch diet as a control (CO), Ilpum polished rice diet (IP), Ilpum brown rice diet (IB), polished rice diet (SP) and brown rice diet (SB) of Suwon 464) to diabetic mice for 8 weeks, after analyzing dietary fiber contents of 5 experimental diets. Diet intake, body weight, organ weights, and lipids levels of serum, liver and feces were measured. The dietary fiber contents in CO, IP, IB, SP, and SB diets were 1.0, 1.2, l.4, 1.4, and 2.0% respectively. Body weight and liver and epididymal fat pad weights were lower in SB group than the other groups though there was no significant difference in diet intake among experimental groups. The concentrations of serum triglyceride was lower in SP and SB groups than CO and IP groups. The levels of hepatic total lipid and total cholesterol were significantly lower in SP and SB groups than CO group, and the level of hepatic triglyceride was lower in IB, SP and SB groups than CO group. The levels of total lipid and triglyceride excreted in feces were higher in IB, SP and SB, and the level of total cholesterol in feces was higher in SP and SB groups than CO group. These results suggested that the high dietary fiber rice (Suwon 464) decrease the triglyceride or total cholesterol concentrations of serum and liver by increasing of fecal lipid excretion in diabetic mice. Effects of Chicken Feet Gelatin and Wheat Fiber Levels on Quality Properties of Semi-dried Chicken Jerky

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chicken feet gelatin and wheat fiber levels on the quality characteristics properties of semi-dried chicken jerky. The obtained chicken feet gelatin swollen with hydrochloric solution (0.1 N HCl, pH $1.31{\pm}0.02$) was dehydrated via freeze-drying. Six formulations of chicken jerky that were prepared, based on the ratio of chicken meat, chicken feet gelatin and wheat fiber, were 100:0:0, 98:0:2, 99:1:0, 97:1:2, 98:2:0 and 96:2:2, respectively. The moisture content of semi-dried chicken jerky containing 2% wheat fiber was higher than that of jerky without the added fiber (p<0.05); moreover, an increase in the content of chicken feet gelatin also increased the moisture content. The drying yield of the samples increased with an increase in chicken feet gelatin. In addition, the drying yield of samples containing 2% wheat fiber was higher (p<0.05) than those without the added wheat fiber. However, the shear force of the samples significantly decreased with the increase in chicken feet gelatin content. Further, the shear force of the samples containing 2% wheat fiber was higher (p<0.05) than those without the added wheat fiber. No significant differences, except for color, were observed in the sensory analysis among the treatments.

Status of Consumption and Consumer Satisfaction of Dietary Fiber Supplements among Adults Living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province (서울.경기지역 성인의 식이섬유 보충용 제품의 섭취 현황과 소비자 만족도)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of consumption and consumer satisfaction of dietary fiber supplements. The survey was conducted using a self-recorded questionnaire developed to meet the purpose of this study. The characteristics of the subjects who have taken dietary fiber supplements in the past are as follows: distributions of socioeconomic variables showed that the highest-ranked group(the group that reported the highest consumption of dietary fiber supplements) was professionals with a college degree or higher degree. In addition, the highest-ranked group were the most healthy, nonsmokers and reported drinking habits of '1~2 times/week'. Regarding the health status of those surveyed, digestive disease and constipation were the most common complaints. The majority responded with 'health concerns' to the question that asked the reason for their purchase of the dietary fiber supplements. Three major places respondents could find dietary fiber supplements were 'through the internet', 'the market', 'the pharmacy' in descending order. The compositions of dietary fiber products varied. 'konjac', 'cellulose', 'psyllium husks' were the most popular components consumed by the subjects. The average duration of product consumption was less than one month. In terms of satisfaction levels(satisfaction was ranked from 1 to 5), 'taste' and 'type' scored the highest in satisfaction levels while 'price' ranked the lowest. When subjects were asked about self-awareness regarding the physiological efficacy of dietary fiber supplements, the responses were positive in 'bowel movement' and 'weight loss'. Further research is required to improve the quality of dietary fiber supplements in order to assist consumers in selecting the appropriate products.

  • The aim of this research was to investigate the manufacturing possibility of the paper sludge-synthetic fiber-wood fiber composite. Three levels of the formulation of paper sludge, synthetic fiber and wood fiber (5:5:90, 15:15:70, 25:25:50), two types of adhesive (PMDI, urea-formaldehyde resin) and three levels of density(0.7, 0.8, 0.9) were designed. From the test result, composites with similar or better properties, when compared with commercial fiberboard, appeared to be possible by the addition of up to 30~50% paper sludge and synthetic fiber into wood fiber.

Analysis of the Mechanical Properties of High-Tension Performance Biochar Concrete Reinforced with PVA Fibers Based on Biochar Cement Replacement Ratio

  • This study evaluated the mechanical properties of high-tension performance biochar concrete, focusing on the effects of varying biochar cement replacement ratios (0 %, 1 %, 2 %, 3 %, 4 %, and 5 %). Mechanical properties, including compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength, were tested. The results showed a general decrease in compressive strength with increasing biochar replacement, with significant reductions at 1 % to 3 % levels. PVA fiber reinforcement improved long-term compressive strength, particularly at higher biochar levels. Tensile and flexural strength also showed initial reductions with low biochar levels but improved at higher replacement levels. PVA fibers consistently enhanced tensile and flexural strength. SEM images confirmed the integration of biochar and PVA fibers into the cement matrix, enhancing microstructural density and crack resistance.
