  • Fiber laser is a heat source which is introduced recently, and so has a little researched data compare with conventional laser processing. Moreover basic data for welding monitoring are also insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the change of signal with measuring position and angle of plasma emission signals were analysed as a basic experiment for real time monitoring in fiber laser welding. As a result, the signals measured from the side, front and rear had the biggest intensity at $60^{\circ}$, and frequency peak to reflect the behavior of keyhole and swing of plasma by shield gas was detected at $45{\sim}60^{\circ}$. However, both intensity of signal and the result of FFT for monitoring were satisfied at the angle of $45^{\circ}$ from the side.

  • Laser welding is a high-density energy welding method. Hence, deep penetration and high welding speed can be realized with lower heat input as compared with conventional welding. The heat input of a CW laser welding is determined by laser power and welding speed. In this study, bead and lap welding of $0.5mm^t$ pure titanium was performed using a fiber laser. Its weldability with laser power and welding speed was evaluated. Penetration, bead width, joining length, and bead shape were investigated, and the mechanical properties were examined through tensile-shear strength tests. Welds with sound joining length were obtained when the laser power and welding speed were respectively 0.5 kW and 2.5 m/min, and 1.5 kW and 6 m/min, and the weld obtained at low output presented better ductility than that obtained at high output.

  • Recently, mobile information devices, such as cellular phone, PDA(Personal Digital Assistant, PDA) are getting smaller and thinner. Accordingly, ultra precision welding technology is required to manufacture the high performance system for use in the telecommunication industry. In this study, we propose the laser micro welding process. Using ytterbium fiber laser, a wide range of experiments have been carried out for the gold wire-to-gold thin film welding.

  • This study was performed bead welding of pure titanium by using fiber laser. Since titanium is very sensitive to oxidation and nitriding during welding, it is important to compose the shielding equipment compared with different material. Thus side and coaxial shield nozzle, rail and chamber type shielding equipment are widely used to protect effectively the weld during welding. Experiments were performed by changing nozzle angle and distance using side and coaxial shield nozzle. The bead colors of gold, brown, blue, purple and yellowish white were obtained by changing variables of shield nozzle, and then its weldability was investigated. As experiment result, sound and not brominated beads were formed when side nozzle angle and distance were respectively $45^{\circ}$ and 10 mm.

  • Ar, $N_2$, and He are the conventional kind of shield gas that are used for laser welding. Many researches on the impact of laser welding shield gas have been done, and it is on going until now. However, there are few studies that analyze the changes and differences of the plasma emission signal. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the change in the penetration characteristics according to the type of shield gas during fiber laser welding impacts to the plasma signal. As a result, if was checked that the difference in molecular weight of Ar, $N_2$, and He affects to the amount of spatter, and also found that the measured plasma radiation signal changes similar to the order of the molecular weight of the gases. Especially, clear change on the signal intensity per each shield gas was measured through RMS, and found that the shield gas was nothing to do with the FFT analyzed result.

  • To develop and understand dissimilar metals joining of Stainless steel and Copper, ultra-high speed laser lap welding was studied using single mode fiber laser in this study. SUS304 and Cu have large differences in materials properties, and Cu and Fe have no intermetallic compounds by typical binary phase of Cu and Fe system. In this study, ultra-high speed lap welds of SUS304 and Cu dissimilar metals using single-mode fiber laser was generated, and weldability of the weld fusion zone was evaluated using a tensile shear test. To understand the phenomenon of tensile shear load, weld fusion zone of interface weld area and fracture parts after tensile shear test were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis system. And it was confirmed that Cu was easily melting and penetrating in the grain boundaries of SUS304 because of low melting temperature. And high thermal conductivity of copper occurred dissipate heat energy rapidly. These properties cause the solidification cracking in weld zone.

  • This paper presents a study on heat transfer and residual distortion analysis of laser welded EDFA(Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) LD(Laser Diode) Pump using the finite element method. In the production process of LD Pump in light-wave communication system, ferrule and saddle are welded by Nd-YAG laser. These parts experience thermal and mechanical effect during heating and cooling cycle with the laser welding. Thus distortion happens in the laser-welded packaging, and it makes an error in detecting the light signal translate through optical fiber in LD Pump. The amount of final displacement produced by the laser welding is predicted using the finite element method. And the optimal shape of saddle is proposed with the results of numerical analyses to minimize the displacement.

  • On this study, we researched the in-process monitoring during fiber laser welding as well as on the first paper. On the previous/formal study, we analyzed the change of emission signal on thin plate welding. On this study, however, we analyzed RMS and FFT with emission signals in laser welding on lap joint and butt joint of 8mm-thick 316L stainless steel. As the result, the movement of specific frequency peak was observed according to welding speed changes. Furthermore, frequency peak as a result of FFT on the thick plate welding are much clearer than on the thin plate welding. Therefore, it is expected that the welding parameter changes can be predicted in case of applying FFT to in-process monitoring.

  • Welding process of ultra thin stainless steel foil was investigated using a single mode Yb-fiber laser with a CW maximum output power 40W. In micro welding, critical power density for keyhole welding was 1 to 2 orders larger higher than in macro-welding due to larger thermal conduction, extremely high speed welding becomes possible.

  • As the industrial technology has been developed, a dissimilar welding has been received huge attention in various engineering fields. To understand the mechanical properties and possibility of applications of dissimilar metals joining, the laser welding of Cu and Ni dissimilar metals was studied in this paper. Cu and Ni have differences in materials properties, and Cu and Ni make no intermetallic compounds according to typical binary phase of Cu and Ni system. In this study, lap welds of Cu and Ni dissimilar metals using single-mode fiber laser with high welding speed were tried, and mechanical properties of the welds zone were evaluated using a Vickers hardness test and a tensile shear test. To recognize the relation between hardness and tensile shear load, weld fusion zone of interface weld area were observed. And it was confirmed that the ultra-high welding speed could make good weld beads and higher hardness parts had higher tensile shear load under the all conditions.
