  • Microflute has several advantages of production cost and strength compared to board. Production technology of microflute has not been fully explored. Therefore suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was analyzed by measuring (1) lengths of corrugating medium before flute formation, (2) those after flute formation but before conditioning and (3) those after flute formation and after conditioning. The suitability of corrugating medium was better when the length change before and after conditioning after flute formation was smaller, because flute sustained its form. The suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was better when the flute height after flute formation was higher. The suitability of corrugating medium was analyzed depending on properties of corrugating medium in terms of fiber bonding strength and paper stiffness. For better microflute shape formation and its preservation it was found that fiber bonding should be increased, proper stiffness was required, and resistance to water absorption from surroundings should be increased.

  • This study discusses frequency analysis based on the frequency spectrum and process characterization in orthogonal cutting of Fiber-matrix composite materials. A sparsely distributed idealized composite material, namely a glass reinforced polyester(GFRP) was used as workpiece The present method employs a force sensor and the signals from the sensor are processed using the fast Fourier transform(FFT) technique. The experimental correlations between the different chip formation mechanisms and power spectrum me established. Effects of fiber orientation, cutting parameters and tool geometry on the cutting mechanisms me also discussed.

  • In-situ $CaCO_3$ formation on recycled wood pulp was studied to improve optical property and filler attachment to the fiber furnish in papermaking. We tried to attach calcium oxide (CaO) to the recycled fibers, old newspaper (ONP) in this case, by using selected polymers before in-situ $CaCO_3$ formation reaction on fibers, and then, $CO_2$ was injected to the furnish until all the CaO on fiber surfaces was consumed. It was found that the attachment of newly formed $CaCO_3$ to recycled fibers became stronger by attaching CaO to the fibers before in-situ $CaCO_3$ formation reaction. It was expected that the polymers used for the attachment of calcium source to the fiber furnishes helped to keep the newly formed $CaCO_3$ strongly attached to the fiber surface as well as to retain the impurities associated with calcium source and recycled fibers, if any. In-situ $CaCO_3$ formation gave higher brightness and much less ERIC value in ONP sheet than the case when the equivalent amount of GCC was added to the furnish.

  • This study was carried out to investgate the possiblity of using waste bamboo and bast fiber from paper mulberry for Hwaseonji production. 3 types of Hwaseonji were made in an experimental system, 100% bamboo pulp, bamboo pulp mixed with bast fiber in two different ratios, 70% : 30% and 40% : 60%, respectively. The result were as follows: 1. The chinese ink blots of Hwaseonji made from bamboo pulp only was satisfactory, but its tensile strength showed a low value. In order to improve the tensile strength, we must develope a new beating method with musilige. 2. The burst strength increased as the bast fiber content increased. But it is a special characteristic of Hwaseonji, that an even formation of paper is required. Therefore, only the short bast fiber is needed. 3. The tensile strength was raised by increasing the bast fiber content to 60%, resulting in a more durable Hwaseonji. 4. In even thickness, the higher opacity showed the more bast fiber. So the opacity of product III (bamboo: 40%, bast fiber: 60%) is the highest. 5. The commodity value of hand-made paper should be grade-up after a dedusting process.
