  • Development of egg, larvae and juveniles for the Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus are described following natural fertilization in the indoor tank of $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Following a routine hormone treatment technique for the brood stock, male and female mackerels were artificially matured by intramuscular injections of LHRHa at a dosage of $400{\mu}g/kg$ body weight (BW)+Domperidone at a dosage of $4{\mu}g/kg$ body weight (BW) to induce maturation in a separate aquarium and induced natural spawning. Fertilized eggs were ca. 1.0 mm in diameter; spherical in shape with a single oil globule; pelagic and non-adhesive. Hatching occurs 41 hours after fertilization at $23-24^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae was 3.03 mm in average total length (ATL), the mouth and anus were not open, oil globule located in posterior end of yolk sac, and preanal length was 42.8% of TL. The larvae measuring 2.89 mm ATL, almost absorbed yolk sac and oil globule material in 2 days after hatching, in which the mouth and anus were open. Melanophores, branch or star in shape were observed on the top of head, peritoneal region and along the ventral contour. In 13 days after hatching, the larvae was 6.88 mm ATL, its posterior end of notochord began to flex upward, finfold of caudal fin appeared, jaw teeth were already formed. In 19 days after hatching, the larvae was 7.71 mm ATL completed only caudal fin rays (9+8), and preanal length was 49.4% of TL. In 37 days after hatching, the larvae was 27.4 mm ATL already completed all the fins, and preanal length was 59.9% of TL.

  • The fertilized eggs of E. septemfasciatus are spherical and transparent with buoyancy at 790 to $890{\mu}m$ (average $821.8{\pm}2.0{\mu}m$) in diameter with 170 to $230{\mu}m$ oil globules (average $192.9{\pm}0.93{\mu}m$). Hatching began approximately 46 and 35 hours after fertilization at $22.0^{\circ}C$ and $25.0^{\circ}C$ water temperature, respectively. The average total length of newly hatched larvae was $1.75{\pm}0.03mm$. Most of the yolk and oil globules were absorbed within 3 to 4 days after hatching. The larvae reached 2.48 to 2.72 mm in total length, and their mouths and anuses opened at 3 to 4 days after hatching. In this time, the mouth diameters of the larvae were 0.209 to 0.238 mm. The larvae reached 3.24 to 4.15 mm in total length at 11 to 17 days after hatching, and began to metamorphose at the time the second dorsal and pelvic spines appeared and elongated. The abdominal cavity was densely lined with melanophores. The larvae reached 5.12 mm in total length at 24 days after hatching.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the egg, larvae and juveniles development of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, and relationships of M. anguillicaudatus and M. mizolepis, Cobitididae Fishes. The adult fishes were collected in Samsan-cheon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea and their spawning inducement was carried by ovaprim injections. The egg shape was circular and the size was average 1.12 mm. The eggs were hatched at 61 to 72 h after fertilization. The newly hatched larvae had an average 3.23 mm in total length (TL). At 5 days after hatching, the larvae reached to post larval stage and they were 10.3 mm in TL. At 19 days after hatching, it reached to juvenile stage and was 25.3 mm in TL. The egg size of M. anguillicaudatus was almost same as M. mizolepis but the hatching period of M. anguillicaudatus has taken longer. It was possible for interspecific distinguishability of M. anguillicaudatus and M. mizolepis when their larvae reached to juvenile stage by the development of keel-like ridges.

  • We evaluated the hatchability of fertilized eggs from six hybrid combinations of highly valued grouper species inhabiting temperate and warm waters, with the goal of establishing a novel hybrid with enhanced growth and viability during the culturing period in the temperate waters of Korea. Hybrid combinations with red-spotted grouper females exhibited high hatchability with high a fertilization and hatching rate of fertilized eggs and a low deformity rate of hatched larvae. Conversely, hybrid combinations with kelp grouper females had very low hatching rates and very high deformity rates; commercial production of seed from such crosses would be difficult without improving hatchability. The hatchabilities of convict grouper ♀×giant grouper ♂ and kelp grouper ♀×red-spotted grouper ♂ were lower than those of maternal purebreds, but these two hybrid combinations were expected to produce potentially large quantities of hatched larvae. In the above evaluation, promising hybrid combinations were identified for commercial production of seed. For these hybrids to contribute to the development of Korea's mariculture industry, mass production of fertilized eggs and seeds is necessary, along with the development of advanced rearing techniques, such as the identification of a suitable rearing temperature.

  • The development of the egg, larvae, and juveniles of Acheilognathus macropterus from the Wicheon stream of Nakdonggang River was investigated for early life history characteristics. The fish used in the study were collected from Wicheon stream located in Bian-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The fertilized egg was 1.88±0.09 mm (n=30) in long diameter and 1.34±0.06 mm (n=30) in short diameter. After fertilization at a water temperature of 20℃, the egg took 31 h and 40 min to hatch. Newly hatched larvae had an average total length of 3.92±0.13 mm (n=30) and possessed a yolk sac the mouth and anus were not developed. Twenty days after hatching, the postflexion larvae had an average total length of 8.08±0.29 mm (n=30), with the tail tip fully bent at 45° and began feeding. Thirty-three days after hatching, the number of fin stems reached an integer with an average total length of 15.0±1.08 mm (n=30). In this study, differences in the egg size, hatching time, melanophore development period, and distribution location were confirmed between A. macropterus and allied species.

  • The hypo-salinity effects on fertilized eggs, embryos and larvae were investigated in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) obtained from hatcheries in Cheju-Island, Yeosu and Chungnam. Those were treated to eight concentration; 0, 3.4, 6.7, 10.1, 13.4, 20.2, 27.4 and 33.6 ‰. It was not discrepancy in the survival rate and hatching success rate of fertilized embryos obtained from different regions. Also, in the larvae, the regional difference was not appeared. The survival rate and hatching ability of embryos significantly diminished in the lower groups than 13.4 ‰ compared to 33.6 ‰. After fertilization, namely embryos are tolerant of a wide range of salinity (13.4 - 33.6 ‰). Reduced salinity induced an increase of the malformed embryo and larvae including various deformities; irregular embryos membrane (or yolk sac depression), fin erosion and swim bladder inflation in the flounder embryo. The hatching success of embryos was significantly reduced in lower salinity than 13.4 ‰. Notably, the reduction of larval survival rate significantly was observed in ≤10.1 ‰ treated groups with the same manner of survival rates of the embryos. Additionally, olive flounder was found to be adequate model for measuring external impulses because there are no the regional differences.
