  • KEPRI has studied planar type SOFC stacks using anode-supported single cells and kW class co-generation systems for residential power generation. A 1kW class SOFC system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP part and a water reservoir. A hot box part contains a SOFC stack made up of 48 cells with $10{\times}10cm^2$ area and ferritic stainless steel interconnectors, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor and heat exchangers. Thermal management and insulation system were especially designed for self-sustainable operation. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap and system control units. When a 1kW class SOFC system was operated at $750^{\circ}C$ with hydrogen, the stack power was 1.2kW at 30 A and 1.6kW at 50A. Turning off an electric furnace, the SOFC system was operated using hydrogen and city gas without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about 1.3kW with hydrogen and 1.2kW with city gas respectively. The system also recuperated heat of about 1.1kW by making hot water. Recently KEPRI developed stacks using $15{\times}15cm^2$ cells and tested them. KEPRI will develop a 5 kW class CHP system using $15{\times}15cm^2$ stacks by 2010.

초임계압 화력 과열기 구조의 고신뢰도 건전성 평가 방법 (A method on integrity evaluation with high reliability for superheater structure in a supercritical thermal power plant)

  • Integrity evaluations on a platen superheater were conducted as per ASME Section VIII Division 2(hereafter 'ASME VIII(2)') which was originally used for design with implicit consideration of creep effects. A platen superheater subjected to severe loading conditions of high pressure and high temperature at creep regime in a supercritical thermal plant in Korea was chosen for present study. Additional evaluations were conducted as per nuclear-grade high-temperature design rule of RCC-MRx that takes creep effects into account explicitly. Comparisons of the two results from ASME VIII(2) and RCC-MRx were conducted to quantify the conservatism of ASME VIII(2). From present analyses, it was shown that the design evaluation results exceeded allowable limits of RCC-MRx for the plant design conditions although limits of ASME VIII(2) were satisfied regardless of operation time, which means that design as per ASME VIII(2) might be potentially non-conservative in case of operation in creep range. A high-temperature design evaluation program as per RCC-MRx, called 'HITEP_RCC-MRx' has been used and it was shown that pressure boundary components can be designed reliably with the program especially for the loading conditions of long-term creep conditions.

Development of kW Class SOFC Systems for Combined Heat and Power Units at KEPRI

  • The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.

고체산화물 연료전지 금속연결재용 STS 444의 코발트 보호막 산화 특성 (Oxidation Properties of Cobalt Protective Coatings on STS 444 of Metallic Interconnects for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells)

  • 코발트 보호막 코팅이 적용된 페라이트계 스테인리스 스틸인 STS 430과 STS 444 소재에 대해 고체산화물 연료전지용 금속연결재로서의 고온 산화 특성에 대해 살펴보았다. 코발트 코팅층은 $800^{\circ}C$ 고온 산화 후 코발트 산화물 및 $Co_2CrO_4$, $CoCr_2O_4$, $CoCrFeO_4$ 등과 같은 코발트가 함유된 스피넬 상을 형성하였다. 또한 페라이트계 스테인리스 스틸과 코발트 코팅의 계면에서 크롬과 철이 함유된 치밀한 산화층을 형성하여 금속연결재 표면의 스케일 성장속도를 감소시키고 금속연결재 내에 함유된 크롬의 외부 확산을 효과적으로 억제하였다. 한편 STS 430은 고온 산화 후 표면에 형성된 스케일 하부에 $SiO_2$와 같은 내부 산화물이 형성된 반면 STS 444는 표면 스케일 이외에 다른 내부 산화물은 확인되지 않았으며 고온에서의 면저항 측정 결과, 코발트가 코팅된 STS 444의 전기 전도성이 STS 430 보다 우수한 것으로 나타났다.

A Preliminary Design Concept of the HYPER System

  • In order to transmute long-lived radioactive nuclides such as transuranics(TRU), Tc-99, and I- l29 in LWR spent fuel, a preliminary conceptual design study has been performed for the accelerator driven subcritical reactor system, called HYPER(Hybrid Power Extraction Reactor) The core has a hybrid neutron energy spectrum: fast and thermal neutrons for the transmutation of TRU and fission products, respectively. TRU is loaded into the HYPER core as a TRU-Zr metal form because a metal type fuel has very good compatibility with the pyre- chemical process which retains the self-protection of transuranics at all times. On the other hand, Tc-99 and I-129 are loaded as pure technetium metal and sodium iodide, respectively. Pb-Bi is chosen as a primary coolant because Pb-Bi can be a good spallation target and produce a very hard neutron energy spectrum. As a result, the HYPER system does not have any independent spallation target system. 9Cr-2WVTa is used as a window material because an advanced ferritic/martensitic steel is known to have a good performance under a highly corrosive and radiation environment. The support ratios of the HYPER system are about 4∼5 for TRU, Tc-99, and I-129. Therefore, a radiologically clean nuclear power, i.e. zero net production of TRU, Tc-99 and I-129 can be achieved by combining 4 ∼5 LWRs with one HYPER system. In addition, the HYPER system, having good proliferation resistance and high nuclear waste transmutation capability, is believed to provide a breakthrough to the spent fuel problems the nuclear industry is faced with.

금속연료-피복재 상호확산 거동에 미치는 기상증착법의 영향 (Effect of Vapor Deposition on the Interdiffusion Behavior between the Metallic Fuel and Clad Material)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the performance of diffusion barriers in order to prevent fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) between the metallic fuels and the cladding materials, a potential hazard for nuclear fuel in sodium-cooled fast reactors. In order to prevent FCCI, Zr or V metal is deposited on the ferritic-martensitic stainless steel surface by physical vapor deposition with a thickness up to $5{\mu}m$. The diffusion couple tests using uranium alloy (U-10Zr) and a rare earth metal such as Ce-La alloy and Nd were performed at temperatures between 660~800$^{\circ}C$. Microstructural analysis using SEM was carried out over the coupled specimen. The results show that significant interdiffusion and an associated eutectic reaction ocurred in the specimen without a diffusion barrier. However, with the exception of the local dissolution of the Zr layer in the Ce-La alloy, the specimens deposited with Zr and V exhibited superior eutectic resistance to the uranium alloy and rare earth metal.

무전해 코발트 코팅된 금속계 SOFC분리판의 제조 및 특성 평가 (Synthesis and Characterization of the Co-electrolessly Deposited Metallic Interconnect for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell)

  • For this paper, we investigated the area specific resistance (ASR) of commercially available ferritic stainless steels with different chemical compositions for use as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) interconnect. After 430h of oxidation, the STS446M alloy demonstrated excellent oxidation resistance and low ASR, of approximately 40 $m{\Omega}cm^2$, of the thermally grown oxide scale, compared to those of other stainless steels. The reason for the low ASR is that the contact resistance between the Pt paste and the oxide scale is reduced due to the plate-like shape of the $Cr_2O_3$(s). However, the acceptable ASR level is considered to be below 100 $m{\Omega}cm^2$ after 40,000 h of use. To further improve the electrical conductivity of the thermally grown oxide on stainless steels, the Co layer was deposited on the stainless steel by means of an electroless deposition method; it was then thermally oxidized to obtain the $Co_3O_4$ layer, which is a highly conductive layer. With the increase of the Co coating thickness, the ASR value decreased. For Co deposited STS444 with 2 ${\mu}m$hickness, the measured ASR at $800^{\circ}$ after 300 h oxidation is around 10 $m{\Omega}cm^2$, which is lower than that of the STS446M, which alloy has a lower ASR value than that of the non-coated STS. The reason for this improved high temperature conductivity seems to be that the Mn is efficiently diffused into the coating layer, which diffusion formed the highly conductive (Mn,Co)$_3O_4$ spinel phases and the thickness of the $Cr_2O_3$(S), which is the rate controlling layer of the electrical conductivity in the SOFC environment and is very thin

연료극 지지체식 평관형 고체산화물 연료전지 단위 번들의 제조 및 성능 (Fabrication and Performance of Anode-Supported Flat Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Unit Bundle)

  • 한국에너지기술연구원에서는 중온 ($700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$) 작동용 연료극 지지체 평관형 SOFC 스택을 구성하는 단위 번들을 개발했다. 연료극 지지체 평관형 셀은 Ni/YSZ 서밋 연료극 지지체 튜브, 8몰% $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) 전해질, $LaSrMnO_3$ (LSM)과 LSM-YSZ composite 및 $LaSrCoFeO_3(LSCF)$로 구성된 다중층 공기극으로 구성됐다. 제조된 연료극지지체 평관형 셀은 유도 브레이징 법에 의해 페리틱 (ferritic) 금속 캡에 접합됐고, 공기극의 전류집전을 위해 공기극 외부에 Ag 선 및 $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCo)$ paste를 이용했으며, 연료극의 전류집전은 Ni felt, wire, 그리고 paste를 이용했다. 단위 번들을 만들기 위한 연료극 지지체 평관형 셀의 반응 면적은 셀 당 $90\;cm^2$ 이었으며, 2개의 셀이 병렬로 연결되어 1개의 단위 번들이 됐고, 총 12개의 단위 번들이 직렬로 연결되어 스택을 구성한다. 공기 및 3%의 가습된 수소를 산화제 및 연료로 사용한 단위 번들의 운전 결과 최대 성능은 $800^{\circ}C$에서 $0.39\;W/cm^2$의 출력이 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 연료극 지지체 평관형 SOFC 셀의 기본 기술과 KIER 만의 독특한 연료극 지지체 평관형 SOFC 스택을 구성하는 단위 번들의 개념을 확립할 수 있었다.

Manufacturing and testing of flat-type divertor mockup with advanced materials

  • During reactor operation, the divertor must withstand unprecedented simultaneous high heat fluxes and high-energy neutron irradiation. The extremely severe service environment of the divertor imposes a huge challenge to the bonding quality of divertor joints, i.e., the joints must withstand thermal, mechanical and neutron loads, as well as cyclic mode of operation. In this paper, potassium-doped tungsten (KW) is selected as the plasma facing material (PFM), oxygen-free copper (OFC) as the interlayer, oxide dispersion strengthened copper (ODS-Cu) alloy as the heat sink material, and reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel as the structural material. In this study, a vacuum brazing technology is proposed and optimized to bond Cu and ODS-Cu alloy with the silver-free brazing material CuSnTi. The most appropriate brazing parameters are a brazing temperature of 940 ℃ and a holding time of 15 min. High-quality bonding interfaces have been successfully obtained by vacuum brazing technology, and the average shear strength of the as-obtained KW/Cu and ODS-Cu alloy joints is ~268 MPa. And a fabrication route for manufacturing the flat-type divertor target based on brazing technology is set. For evaluating the reliability of the fabrication technologies under the reactor relevant condition, the high heat flux test at 20 MW/m2 for the as-manufactured flat-type KW/Cu/ODS-Cu/RAFM mockup is carried out by using the Electron-beam Material testing Scenario (EMS-60) with water cooling. This paper reports the improved vacuum brazing technology to connect Cu to ODS-Cu alloy and summarizes the production route, high heat flux (HHF) test, the pre and post non-destructive examination, and the surface results of the flat-type KW/Cu/ODS-Cu/RAFM mockup after the HHF test. The test results demonstrate that the mockup manufactured according to the fabrication route still have structural and interfacial integrity under cyclic high heat loads.
