One of the most frequently used method for measurement of the degree of sizing (viz., hydrophobicity) is the Stockigt test. However, the Stockigt test was influenced by various factors such as dropping height, dropping amount, dropping speed and viewing angle. The resultant data of the sizing degree on the same specimen also varied according to different testers. Thus, the Stockigt test should be modified to be regarded as a highly reliable and reproducible standard method. For modifying the Stockigt test, it was required to quantify red coloration by reaction between 1% ferric chloride and 2% ammonium thiocyante during Stockigt testing. The cameras capturing the serial images during the red coloration process were the CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)-type and CCD (Charge Coupled Device)-type cameras. For measurement based on KS M 7025, the CCD-type camera must be used due to its high resolution, and on the other hand, for measurement based on Tappi Useful Method 429, the CMOS-type camera may be used owing to its low resolution. It was needed to covert the RGB values of a droplet image into HSV(Hue, Saturation, and Value) values because the human eyes are much closer to HSV than RGB. Among HSV values, the Hue value was accepted as the most reliable index consistent with the red coloration process by excluding the surrounding conditions such as light, tester's movement etc.
In this study, we have developed a process for separating and recovering Ni and Fe in solution through a new solvent instead of TBP and Alamine336, which are solvents used in the conventional solvent extraction method. Experimental conditions were optimized through lab test and a $10L\;h^{-1}$ pilot plant was constructed for commercialization. In addition, the process data for mass production were obtained through pilot experiment and it was confirmed that there is no problem in product quality that can be used through the corrosion test of ferric chloride.

We investigated the antithrombotic effect of Acorus gramineus Soland (A. gramineus) from Korea and Acorus tatarinowii Schott (A. tatarinowii) from China in a rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$). Thirty minutes prior to a 35% $FeCl_3$ application, Sprague Dawley rats were intraperitoneally injected with saline, A. gramineus and A. tatarinowii (100 mg/kg), respectively. Occlusion time of rats injected with A. gramineus was delayed significantly compared to that of the vehicle and A. tatarinowii. Thrombus weight was meaningfully decreased in rats injected with A. gramineus compared to the vehicle. Additionally, A. gramineus inhibited collagen fiber damage in vessel compared to the vehicle, but A. tatarinowii did not show a significant effect. Our results show that A. gramineus and A. tatarinowii from the same genus have different antithrombotic effects, and especially A. gramineus has a better antithrombotic effect than A. tatarinowii.
Dewatering sludge using inorganic chemicals with polymer has been evaded for reuse on account of the risks of high heavy metals contained and soil acidification. Composting feasibility of coagulation & dewatering sludges produced from livestock waste treatment plant was investigated. The results of analysis prove that dewatering sludge is valuable matter with suitable elements for composting if high quality ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) is used for coagulation & dewatering process. In pot-cultivation of harvestes, using effects of dewatering sludge improved with lime treatment was very effective. The results of pot-cultivation proved that harms of crops according to different acid tolerances were not detected. But it was not applied to crops with weak acid tolerance or greenhouse for free from gas damage. Also, Further studies and monitorings are necessary to use sludges because results of pot-cultivation were generated differently by characteristics of soil, nutrient demand of plants, mature degree of sludge, consecutive cultivation and etc.
Efficient removal of nickel from the ferric chloride etching solution has been studied. At first, $Fe^{3+}$ was reduced to $Fe^{2+}$ by the electrolytic iron flake or the waste shadow mask iron plate. And then, $Ni^{2+}$ was removed from the solution by electrolytic iron powder. Under the optimum conditions the reduced rates of nickel were 99 % and 98%, respectively at the initial $Ni^{2+}$ concentrations of 1.0% and 0.1%. Sludge formed during reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in the solution were analyzed by XRD and SEM.
The applicability of the USEPA's (United States Environmental Protection Agency) three criteria of enhanced coagulation (criterion 1-TOC level less than 2 mg/l. before chlorination; criterion II-% requirement of TOC removal; criterion III-point of diminishing return) for Korean waters was evaluated in this study. This study also investigated an effect of enhanced coagulation on turbidity removal, and attempted to identify the best coagulant for enhanced coagulation. Three different waters were used in this study: one river water and two lake waters. five different coagulants were used: alum, liquid alum, PACl, ferric chloride with and without water. Results of this study showed that all three criteria were achievable for the tested waters. For these waters, controlling criterion was found to be different depending upon raw water characteristics. When initial Toe level was low(< 4 mg/L), criterion I (< 2 mg/L) could be the controlling criterion. As TOC level increased, criterion II (% TOC removal) became the controlling criteria. It was possible to achieve different goals of turbidity and TOC removals. Although the optimum region of TOC removal was more acidic than that of turbidity removal, there was no conflict between these two removals. The best coagulant was found to be different depending upon the evaluation tool: maximum and optimum removal. ferric chloride was more effective than alum in terms of the maximum TOC removal, while Al-based coagulant such as alum or PACl was the best coagulant in terms of the optimum TOC removal.
Wet chemical etching of stainless steel foil by aqueous ferric chloride solution was investigated in this study. Effects of various process parameters (e.g. etchant agitation rate, etchant temperature, $Fe^{3+}$ ion concentration, free HCl concentration, specific gravity, etc.) on the etch rate was first studied, and it was found that the etch rate of AK (aluminum-killed) steel, chromium metal and stainless steel (STS430J1L alloy) follows the pseudo-first order reaction equation. When the fatigue ratio of etchant was kept under 16%, sludge was not formed in the solution, and the etched surface showed smooth roughness. The etch rate decreases as Baume of etchant increases, but the effect of free HCl concentration on the etch rate turned out to be minimal. Experimental data were compared with the calculated results from modeled equation, showing very good agreement.

A new etchant formulation was developed in this study to increase the shadow mask production rate, utilizing the $Fe(ClO_4)_3$ as an additive in the aqueous $FeCl_3$ solution. The shadow mask etch rate increased substantially with the increase of $Fe(ClO_4)_3$ concentration in the etchant. The etch rate difference between Ni and Invar steel was also reduced with the addition of $Fe{(ClO_4)_3}$ for most of the operating conditions, which was caused by the enhanced etch rate of both Ni and Fe by the new etchant. The increase in etch rate with the addition of $Fe(ClO_4)_3$ to aqueous ferric chloride solution was attributed to the superior electron transfer capability of $ClO^{4-}$ ion to that of $Cl^-$ ion.
Effects of various chemical additives and heat treatments were investigated on the wheat flour doughs and breads. Ammonium ferric citrate, Ca-citrate, CaCl$_2$, FeSO$_4$, MgCl$_2$and ZnO were mixed respectively to the flour up to 0.1% of flour dry weight basis. Ammonium ferric citrate and ferric sulfate showed no significant effects on the dough properties and magnesium sulfate, calcium chloride and zinc oxide increased elastic properties and optimum dough mixing time. However, calcium citrate and magnesium chloride showed no significant effects on the dough mixing properties. Most of chemicals were detrimental on the bread volume except MgSO$_4$ and CaCl$_2$. Breads with MgSO$_4$ and CaCl$_2$ retained the equal or slightly higher volume compared to control bread. Crumb and crust colors of breads with addition of chemicals were changed to lighter than that of control bread. L values both of crumb and crust increased with addition of chemicals except Ca-citrate. To inactivate the endogenous enzymes of flour, flour was roasted under electric oven, exposed to UV and microwave. Those heat treatments of flour increased dough stability and produced no dough breakdown after optimum mixing time. However, bread volume of heat-treated flour decreased.

The influence of ferric ion ($Fe^{+3}$) on bioelectrochemical anaerobic digestion for sewage sludge was explored at ambient temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). Before the addition of ferric ion, the removal of volatile solids (VS) was 65.9% and the specific methane production rate was 370 mL/L/d. After the addition of ferric ion (200 ppm) to feed sludge, the bioelectrochemical anaerobic digester was more stable in the state variables including pH, alkalinity, COD and VFAs, and the VS removal and specific methane production rate were increased to 69.8% and 396 mL/L/d, respectively. However, the methane content in biogas was slightly reduced by the addition of ferric ion, indicating that the activity of planktonic anaerobic bacteria (PAB) was more improved after the addition of ferric ion. The dominances of syntrophic bacteria (Cloacamonas) and hyrolytic bacteria (Saprospiraceae, Ottowia pentelensis) in the PAB were increased by the addition of ferric ion. The addition of ferric ion improved the performance of bioelectrochemical anaerobic digestion for sewage sludge at ambient temperature.
