  • Seasonal changes in free arginine concentration in Pinus radiata buds were studied in four clones from May, 1974 to June, 1975. The buds were from the tips of first order branches which had flowered the previous year, and the significant findings were as follows: (1) In general, arginine concentration in the buds of the four clones showed the highest peaks from December to March, a period spanning the time of flower initiation, and the lowest levels in Angust and September. (2) The timing of individual arginine peaks during the period of flower initiation matched roughly the timing of initiation of several female cone clusters, as determined from Clone 7 which characteristically initiates three cycles of female cones on its leading shoot. (3) The heavy-flowering clones showed higher arginine concentration than ther poorer flowering ones, especially at the time of flower initiation.

  • The striped fruit fly, Baetrocera scutellata (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the most important pests in Cucurbitaceae plants. Among 6 attractants for B. scutellata used, Cue-lure was shown better effect than the others. Newly emerged adult of B. scutellata had been occurred early June of the year tested. There were two peaks of occurrences of B. scutellata, one was from mid-July to early August and the other was early September suggesting that B. scutellata has two generation a year. The larva of B. seutellata damaging the female flower and stem of the pumpkin was found for the frist time on Korea. The blossoms were damaged and fallen by B. scutellata which were 53.8% of male flower and 30.7% of female flower in the 6 pumpkins. The pumpkin flowers were damaged 51.9% by B. scutellata. Especially thc pumpkin flowers damaged were shown 72.7% (1015/1397 individuals) from August to September. The larva of B. scutellata was found from the Trichosanthes kirilowii on 24 June 2009 in Jinan-gun Jeollabuk-do.

  • Background: Duodichogamy is the rarest form of dichogamy in angiosperms, which is characterized by flowering in the sequence of male${\rightarrow}$female${\rightarrow}$male. Disentangling factors promoting duodichogamy require the discovery of more duodichogamous species in angiosperms. However, extremely limited information on duodichogamous species makes it difficult to make general conclusions. Given the inflorescence morphology and flowering characteristics, the Meliaceae family is highly likely to contain duodichogamous species. Methods: We selected 48 individuals from 20 populations in Korea and investigated their flower morphology, arrangement of flowers by sexual condition within inflorescences, and flowering phases and duration of male and female flowers of Toona sinensis (Meliaceae) for 5 years (2011-2015) to determine if the species shows duodichogamous flowering. Results: Toona sinensis belonging to Meliaceae possessed functionally unisexual flowers with rudimentary parts of the opposite sex. The floral organs in male were larger than those in female, except for ovary length and width. In dichasium, male flowers were observed on primary or lateral branches, whereas female flowers were borne only on lateral branches. Overall, individuals from six different populations flowered in the male${\rightarrow}$female${\rightarrow}$male sequence, thereby male is blooming far longer than female flowers at the level of individual trees (male vs. female = 17-20 days vs. 2-4 days). Conclusions: This is the first study to report a duodichogamously flowering species, T. sinensis, within Meliaceae. Several flowering characteristics observed from T. sinensis may be important clues used to discover additional duodichogamous Meliaceae species. Short flowering period and relatively small number of female flowers, which is analogous to reduced ovule numbers observed in other duodichogamous species, may intensify male-male competition in T. sinensis. This study contributed to narrowing down potential candidates of duodichogamy based on their geographic distributions and flowering time.

  • This study was conducted in an attempt to quantify some traits that may be involved in the reproductive process of Pinus thunbergii. During the past 6 years (1995-2000), we surveyed flowering patterns of 60 P. thunbergii clones in a seed orchard which was established in Anmyon-do, 1979. From this survey, we estimated clonal contributions of male and female flowers and sexual asymmetry. Among 60 clones, 18 clones (30%) accounted for 0.37 (1999)~0.46 (1995) of clonal contribution in female flowers and 0.44 (1999)~0.57 (1995) of clonal contribution in male flowers. As compared with the previous reports in other pine species, more clones made contributions to reproductive process in P. thunbergii seed orchard. The relative effective population numbers for females (v♀) varied from 0.59 (1995) to 0.91 (1999) and those for males ( v♂) were between 0.56 (1995) and 0.83 (1998) at gamete level. This showed that the female gametes effectively contribute to the reproductive process more than did the male gametes. The relative effective population numbers at clonal level ($v_b$) were in the range of 0.72 (1995) and 0.93 (1999). More than 73% of the total clones showed values of 0.4~0.6 ($0.5{\pm}0.1$) in maleness index. The values averaged over all the clones were temporally variable with the range of 73% in 1996 and 100% in 2000. The degree of sexual asymmetry ($A_s$) ranged from 0.09 to 0.26. These values were relatively low when compared with those of other trees, suggesting that P. thunbergii seed orchard remains a high level of homogeneity in the number of male and female. All of the various types of effective population numbers were positively correlated with each other while they were negatively correlated with the degree of sexual asymmetry.

  • The costume for gods in the Ancient Roman myth was studied by examining in the embossed-carving, sculptures, mural-painting and various documents of the period. The clothes item, hairstyle, symbol & ornaments and shoes of the gods in the Roman myths were analyzed to understand the formative process in the religious costumes, and results are as follows. First, the costumes for male gods are the same as those for ordinary men lived in ages, including toga, paludamentum, tebenna, tunica. The costumes for female gods are also the same as those for ordinary women lived in ages, including stola, palla, tunica. Second, the hairstyle of male gods is short curled-hair, twisty roll-up hair and braid long-hair due to the influence of Etrurian in the early days. Another hairstyle is appeared in form of the laurelled-crown. The hairstyle of female gods is curled long-hair, chignon style and braid roll-up hair decorated with hairband. Third, the symbol & ornaments which represent the responsible possession of male gods, are appeared in beard, a stick of the message, arrow-case, offering-dish, antlered-glass, shield, spear-handle, as the superhuman forms, such as the lightning shape. For female gods they are is appeared plastron, a stick of the message, flower. some female gods wear necklace, foot-ring, bracelet. Fourth, male gods wear shoes in forms of sandal, buskin, boots, but all female gods are in barefoot. It could be explained by the fact that a man-centered society in the ancient roman is reflected in the world of gods. As mentioned, Gods costume in Roman myths was very similar to or nothing different from the ordinary peoples in Rome. However, they used corps, sacrifices or sepcific symbols depending on the fields that they were responsible for in order to be distinguished from the ordinary people. This is the result from the peoples expression that they should keep a close relationship with Gods hoping to be protected, and rely on them under whatever circumstances.

  • A standard rose cultivar, 'To Dios'(Rosa hybrida) was selected for use as a cut flower from the progeny of a cross between 'Vanilla perfume' and 'Marcia' at the research and development division of the Goyang-si Agricultural Technology Center in 2013. 'Vanilla perfume', an orange-colored (RHS Orange Group 27C) standard rose cultivar with 48 petals, was used as the female plant. 'Marcia', a white-colored (RHS Green white Group 157B) standard rose cultivar with 96 petals was used as the male parent. A cross was made in 2009 and seedlings were produced. Selections were made between 2010 and 2013, and a plant with good cut flower traits was finally selected and named 'To Dios'. 'To Dios' is a standard rose with large flowers of 11.2 cm in diameter and 128 peach-colored (RHS Red Group 36B) petals per flower. Vase life of this cultivar is up to 15 days. It takes 47 days from pruning to blooming and cut flower productivity is approximately $160stems/m^2$ per year. 'To Dios' was registered as a new cultivar No. 4875 with the Korea Seed & Variety Service on March 19, 2014.

  • Lilium lancifolium, which is one of the Korean native lilies, possesses several useful genetic characteristics such as growth vigor, bulbil formation and resistance to Fusarium. Hybridization was performed to insert useful traits of Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland" as the male parent with upward direction and dark brown spotless on the petal into L. lancifolium as the female parent. The rate of pollen germination of L. lancifolium and "Dreamland" were 30% and 60%, respectively. The pollen germination ratio of $F_1$ progenies at flowering date was 25-57%, which is between the parents'pollen germination ratio. The individual flowering time was between 113 days and 131 days after planting. Of 99% of all plants, the leaf shape index was more than five, which means that the leaf shape of $F_1$ plants is more influenced by female than male parent. The flower color was separated into four types. 51.5% of the progenies showed orange and 44.2% showed light orange, respectively. The colors seemed to be highly influenced by female parents. Mixed colors of parents, orange yellow and light yellow orange, were 3.1%, 1.2%, respectively. Flowering directions were segregated by three different ways, upside, side, and downside. Side direction, which is medium type between female and male parent, was 73%. All progenies showed lots of spot on petals except one offspring. The percentage of bulbil formation on leaf axil was 49.4%. Among those, the maximum number of bulbil formation was 25. The mean number of bulbil formation per plant was five.

  • The purpose of this experiment is to improve the ratio of female flower in Schizandra chinensis Baillon. The experiment was carried out in two purposes. One was to understand the development stages on bud formation and determining sex after bud formation by stage. The other was to investigate characteristics of flowers forming on spring when summer pruning was taken place in different cutting part and timing in S. chinensis Baillon. The outcome was that on 7th of June the flower bud was found next to leaf primordium in branch of this year and no changes were found in shape for two weeks by 26th July. On 26th of June, an ovule that forms organ was observed and then, an ovule was found after sex was determined on 6th of July. Second experiment was carried out to find out when the sex was determined by adapting different pruning methods; cutting the branch at 6th node on June 1, June 15, and July 1; cutting the branch at 10th node on June 15, and July 1. The result was that the re-growth ratio on the branch 6th node was cut on June 1 and June 15. July 1 was 34-56% and, however, the number of setting flowers and mail flowers were fewer than the normal branches. More over, even though the re-growth ratio of branches were 34-25% when the cutting was taken place at 10th node on June 15 and July 1, the number of setting flowers and mail flowers were the same as the non treated branch. As a result, it is assumed that cutting controlling in this plant to increase the number of female flowers has no effect.
