  • The tubes in heat exchanger are typically made of copper alloy, stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium alloy material. Type-439 ferritic stainless steel is ferromagnetic material, and furnish higher heat transfer rates than austenitic stainless steels and higher resistance to corrosion-induced flaws. Ferritic stainless steel can be found in low-pressure(LP) feedwater heaters and moisture separator reheaters(MSRs) in turbine system. LP feedwater heaters generally utilize thin wall Type-439 stainless steel tubing, whereas MSRs typically employ a heavier wall tubing with integral fins. Service-induced damage can occur on the O.D(outside diameter) surface of Type-439 ferritic stainless steel tubing which is employed for MSRs tubing, and the most typical damage mechanism is vibration-induced tube-to-TSP(tube support plate) wear and fatigue cracking. The wear has been reported that occurs mainly on the OD surface. Accordingly, in this study, we have evaluated the flaw sizing capability of magnetic saturation eddy current technique using magnetic saturation probe and flawed specimen.

  • This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of a partial repowering scheme for an existing 210 MW coal fired power plant by integrating a gas turbine and by employing waste heat recovery. In this repowering scheme, one of the four operating coal mills is taken out and a new natural gas fired gas turbine (GT) block is considered to be integrated, whose exhaust is fed to the furnace of the existing boiler. Feedwater heating is proposed through the utilization of waste heat of the boiler exhaust gas. From the thermodynamic analysis it is seen that the proposed repowering scheme helps to increase the plant capacity by about 28% and the overall efficiency by 27%. It also results in 21% reduction in the plant heat rate and 29% reduction in the specific $CO_2$ emissions. The economic analysis reveals that the partial repowering scheme is cost effective resulting in a reduction of the unit cost of electricity (UCOE) by 8.4%. The economic analysis further shows that the UCOE of the repowered plant is lower than that of a new green-field power plant of similar capacity.

  • An 1,500MW advanced power reactor required the standard design approval by a Korean regulatory body in 2014. The reactor has been designed to have a 4-train independent safety concept and a passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS). The full power risk or core damage frequency (CDF) of 1,500MW advanced power reactor has been reduced more than that of APR1400. However, the risk during the low power and shutdown (LPSD) operation should be reduced because CDF of LPSD is about 4.7 times higher than that of internal full power. The purpose of paper is to analysis design alternatives to reduce risk during the LPSD. This paper suggests design alternatives to reduce risk and presents sensitivity analysis results.

  • We developed a prototype from the design of a trim, which is the most important in the localization development of a 1500 Ib high-differential pressure-control valve used for boiler feedwater, and measured the flow coefficient, the most basic design data for valves. The following conclusions were drawn. The comparison of the design values of the flow coefficients for the existing X-trim and the multicore trim designed for localization development showed that they were almost identical, and the X-trim value was slightly lower. The comparison of the X-trim and multicore trim based on the valve flow coefficient test showed that they were generally similar, indicating no problem with the design. In the future, we plan to compare and analyze the flow paths for the X-trim and multicore trim via flow analysis.

  • Environmental qualification (EQ) for safety-related equipment is required to ensure that those equipment will perform their required function even under the harsh environment conditions arising from design basis accident in the nuclear power plant. As a part of EQ program, the room temperature analysis in case of a loss of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning(HVAC) system was carried out to ensure the operability of the safety-related equipment of a nuclear power plant randomly chosen among the Korean nuclear power plants. In this paper, this analysis was performed in the conservative perspective using GOTHIC code. The room temperature analysis includes selecting the rooms in which the safety related equipment are located but not supported by safety related HVAC and determining the temperature of the selected rooms. Target rooms for the analysis consist of W229/W237 (Aux. feedwater pump room), W232 (Aux. feedwater tank room) and W230 (Equipment passageway). The results showed the temperature range from $43^{\circ}C$ to $83^{\circ}C$, in 72 hours after a loss of HVAC. Those values are far below of generic EQ temperature($171^{\circ}C$). Therefore, it is satisfied with EQ requirement of temperature limits on safety related equipment.

  • Ocean thermal energy conversion is an organic Rankine cycle that generates power using the temperature difference between surface water and deep water. This study analyzes the thermodynamic efficiency of the cycle, which strongly depends on the working fluid and the cycle configuration. Cycles studied included the classical simple Rankine cycle, Rankine cycles with an open feedwater heater and an integrated regenerator, as well as the Kalina cycle. Nine kinds of simple refrigerants and three kinds of mixed refrigerants were investigated as the working fluids in this study. Pinch-point analysis that set a constant pinch-point temperature difference was applied in the performance analysis of the cycle. Results showed that thermodynamic efficiency was best when RE245fa2 was used as the working fluid with the simple Rankine cycle, the Rankine cycles with an open feedwater heater and an integrated regenerator, and when the mixing ratio of $NH_3/H_2O$ was 0.9:0.1 in the Kalina cycle. If the Rankine cycles with an open feedwater heater, an integrated regenerator, and the Kalina cycle were used for ocean thermal energy conversion, efficiency increases could be expected to be approximately 2.0%, 1.0%, and 10.0%, respectively, compared to the simple Rankine cycle.

  • A major stress determining the remaining life of the tube in feedwater heater of fossil fuel power plant is hoop stress by the internal pressure. However, thermal stress due to temperature difference across the wall thickness also contributed to reduce the remaining life of the tube. Therefore, thermal loading must be considered even though the contribution of internal pressure loading to the stresses of the tube was known to be much higher than that of the thermal loading. In this study, thermal stress of the tubes in the de-superheating zone was estimated, which was generated due to the temperature difference across the tube thickness. Analytic equations were shown for determining the hoop stress and the radial stress of the tube with uniform thinning and for the temperature across the tube thickness. Accuracy and effectiveness of the analytic equations for the stresses were verified by comparing the results obtained by the analytic equations with those obtained from finite element analysis. Using finite element analysis, the stresses for eccentric thinning were also determined. The effect of heat transfer coefficient on thermal stress was investigated using series of finite element analyses with various values of heat transfer coefficient for both inner and outer surface of the tube. It was shown that the effect of heat transfer coefficient at outer surface was larger than that of heat transfer coefficient at inner surface on the thermal stress of the tube. Also, the hoop stress was larger than the radial stress for both cases of uniformly and eccentrically thinned tubes when the thermal loading was only considered without internal pressure loading.

  • Fuzzy modelling is a useful method when the variation of plant dynamics is large. In the fuzzy modelling by parameter identification, a new method is proposed in the part of premise parameters identification and in expanding MISO system into MIMO system. Using the proposed method, a fuzzy model of the drum boiler of the thermal power plant can be derived. In addition, feedwater control of the drum by fuzzy controller using the fuzzy model, is simulated.

  • A new thermal power plant feed-water system model, which is based on Astrom, is presented. Astrom's model has some difficulties in applying to practical systems because it is not able to measure the heat and energy transfer loss. Hence, in order to make up for these difficulties, the Gas State Equation is added to the model. Computer simulations are performed to show the validity of the new model at thermal power plant with practical boiler operating data and to verify the L.Q. controller effect on boiler drum level system.
